The Apple iPhone Thread (10 Viewers)

Anyone have any early reviews of their new 5s? Have the 4s and am with Verizon. Wanted the 5s 64gb and tried to buy it online through Apple, but they would only sell the phones with a 2 year contract that night. Said if I wanted to pay full retail, I would have to go into the store. Don't want to give up my unlimited data so am looking to buy off of contract. Looking for 'real' reviews and I know this is the place so fire away please.

I'm waiting for the bigger iPhone 6. I'll get the new hot color Brown they bring out at that time. Everyone will be jealous of my brown phone.

double check that you will lose unlimited. AT&T users do not

Yeah, I would like to know this as well. I was grandfathered into unlimited on my 4s through Verizon and I don't want to lose it either.

I had to google to find how to use spotlight in 7. It's pretty good, but no option to search the web that I can find, which was useful.

Both Verizon and Apple have verified that if the phone is bought at a subsidized price (on contract), you will have to choose a 'new' data plan with tiered data options. Apple says that Verizon is attempting to get everyone into a new data plan and get rid of the few that still have unlimited. The Apple employee told me that they were under strict rules not to sell any unsubsidized Verizon iPhone 5ss online and would only sell them in store.

I can't speak for ATT but to keep unlimited on verizon all you have to do is add a line. Buy the phone on a new line on your plan and then immediately switch the new phone over to your unlimited # and take the new line and activate a non-smartphone. If you don't have an old phone to activate they can pull one from your history even if you don't have the phone. This new line will now cost $10/month and basically can be used as the upgrade line every 2 years for your unlimited line.

Have you done that? I know on AT&T you have to sign up for a data plan on the new line to get an iPhone. No way to setup a non-smartphone and get the iPhone upgrade on that line without the additional data plan. If you haven't actually done it, I doubt you would sign up for $10 per month without an additional data charge and get a new iPhone.

Also, I ended up switching to the mobile share plan as I don't use a ton of data and my company pays for my line. It let me get my son, my wife and my FIL (yeah I know, but I got a 5 for my son and wife by giving him my previous 4s and some sort of glitch when he was onboarded - immediately said an upgrade was available for him) all on the plan for about $45 per month above what my company pays. My FIL pays for his. I had unlimited, but adding a line to unlimited was ridiculous, like $100 per month.

Yup. I've done it twice actually.

So all it ends up costing you to keep unlimited data is an additional $10 + tax and fees per month to do this?

my wife upgraded from the 4s to the 5s on AT&T and was able to keep her unlimited data plan.
I did the same through the Apple Store.

My estimated delivery at purchase time was on the 30th, just got an email saying it'll be delivered on the 26th. Really wish they'd have made the things a uniform color. The gold/silver trim with white facing is horrible.

Yes.

I hate pretty much everything about the new os. :kicksrock:
My mother in law upgraded and my wife saw it. She said, dont upgrade me. I still have not upgraded. Not sure if I will
Don't imo. I don't think anything about it is an improvement. YMMV of course.
I get some people don't like change no matter what, but i haven't met anyone who didn't like the update after playing around for an hour or so.

Functionally it's better, other than the calendar app. Aesthetically, it's pretty bad though I'll get used to it.

It's noticeably slower on an iPhone 4 but I'm not considering reverting my work phone to 6.1.4.

The fact that iOS 7 even installs on a three year old device is a pretty good selling point for Apple. The track record of their competitors for support of legacy devices is much worse.

Can you not upgrade your main line and keep the unlimited? I have AT&T and when on unlimited, I could upgrade with no issue, but I could not get a new line with a smart phone without paying the $30 minimum data charge. No way around it even if you switched phones and put a non-smart phone on it. I only got rid of the unlimited because I never really used that much and I couldn't add a line for a minimal amount. Aside from what my company pays, I only pay about $120ish per month for three additional iPhones with enough data that I never come close to going over. That is about what I paid for my one unlimited data line.

My son and I like the new OS, but we both have a 5, so I don't notice any slowness. The only thing I don't like is that when you open an app, the apps still have the old UI feel. I assume updates will come out to address that, but that is the thing that looks a little disjointed. Otherwise, I like the new UI a lot. Nothing earth shattering in terms of features, but I like it.

Yes.
I've tried every way possible on Verizon and when I try to add a new line, I have to sign up for a data plan. Doesn't work with them (at least not in my attempts).

Not an iPhone person, but I've got a question on the update. My son has an iPod touch he texts with through an app (textnow?). He texted me yesterday and said there was an update to his iPod available and asked if he could. I said go ahead, but it may take a while. Anyway, after the update, he tries to text a friend from school. There is some confusion on the other end of the texts, and it turns out the texts were going to the girl's mother he was trying to text. My wife also received on her iPhone all of the texts, both from my son, and from the other mother.

My son's iPod is linked to my wife's apple ID, which I assume is how part of this happened. Is this some known new feature of the update, or did something go haywire through the update?
Just like you said, this is because the apple IDs are the same. This happened to me when my wife got her iphone. I quickly set up a new account for her and no more issues. I dont know why it hasnt happened in the past. I can only assume the app recognized the individual user and the upgrade cancelled that. Some apps may not work the way they should without an ios7 update
You can go into the settings>messages and select which phone numbers and/or email addresses to use on each device. For some reason when you upgrade it defaults to all numbers and addresses.

If you use different accounts you cannot share music or apps (or can you?).
Yes, if the different Apple IDs are synched on the same computer, it will load all the apps from each into the iTunes library, where they can be copied to other devices. The only "issue" I have noticed, is that if you try to update an app that was copied from another device, it prompts you for the password for the original device's Apple ID

I have no problem with change. I downloaded the new OS as soon as I found out about it the other day sight unseen (my mistake I guess, but I've always been happy with my iPhones and had no concerns that I wouldn't like the new OS). It's now been several days and I still hate it.

Aesthetics is obviously subjective. I think the new look is atrocious, but I recognize that's just an opinion (it seems it's one shared by many, though, for whatever that's worth). I will say that the "super thin font in pastel colors on a white background" motif arguably moves from the realm of form into the realm of function, because the phone is honestly less user-friendly if everything's harder to read, but I won't gripe on the look too much. But seriously, it's ugly as ####.

Not sure where this falls between "form" and "function" but right off the bat the new lock screen drives me nuts. For example they got rid of the shaded background behind the time and date, and replaced it with just that super thin white font - which is completely unreadable because the upper third of my lock screen wallpaper is a light color. Or at least it was. Now I had to change it to something I like less just so I can read the ####### time on my phone. Thanks for the "improvement."

I don't even know what's better about it functionally. I realize, again, that this is somewhat subjective - someone might love some new feature that I have no use for. But at least for my purposes, nothing seems easier or better, everything seems to take two taps where it used to take one, etc. Let's see... the folders have pages (finally) - yet for some reason despite taking up the whole screen when you open a folder, I can still only see nine icons at a time. The camera takes square photos now...?

I really don't get what I'm supposed to think is better about this OS. It looks terrible and (again, for the way I use the phone) nothing's easier or better, and in fact most of the things I do the most are harder and worse than before. Sure, I'll probably get used to it but that doesn't mean it's good. I was told that once I got used to the new ribbon interface in Microsoft Office that I'd see how much better it is, and here we are years later and guess what? It still blows and is harder to use than the old 2003 format. I've seen nothing to convince me that I'll feel any differently about this "upgrade," too. /rant

Just the three types of swipe you can do from the home screen is a bevy of reductions in numbers of buttons to tap. I haven't encountered a single thing yet that's harder than it was before. Plus even on my 4s there's a noticeable upgrade in speed.

A minor thing, but when you change the volume on a video, the volume box is white now instead of transparent. Really annoying when I'm in a situation where I'm having to actively manage the volume (eg, when the wife is asleep).
