The Apple iPhone Thread (12 Viewers)

If you are able to jailbreak your ios7 device there are some apps I can point you to which can help me debug issues with your battery whether it is user behavior errors or an actual cell problem and whether they'll just swap your phone out.

Yeah, the battery life thing is infuriating. And it was never an issue until I upgraded to iOS 7. Sometimes the thing will say I have 18% left and then a minute later the phone will shut down. Other times it will be on 1% for hours. It's basically become useless below 20%, there's no guessing whether I have 5 minutes or 5 hours of charge left.

I'm too stupid/lazy to do the jailbreak thing. Back in the day, I was all about stuff like that. Now, I pretty much use my phone to text a couple times with my old lady during the day and for playing Battleship while I'm taking a dump at work.

you can take your phone to the genius bar and have them dump the data. Ios7 jailbreak is not out yet anyways.

Oh, you mean the GB?

Yes, you can TYP there and they'll DTD. iOS 7 JB is NOYAs.

sorry for the acronyms. I thought I saw someone using it earlier, it's probably one of those things that I'm so used to seeing that it is just second nature.

iOS 7 on an iPhone 4 made me make the switch. The thinks beyond slow due to the update and the phone is terrible. The functions on the phone are fine but it is not what it used to be with the iOS "upgrade."

I took an alternative route and bought into Windows phone. Still not here as AT&T does not have the amount needed but I'm highly anticipating a better experience. Apple dropped the ball so far and if the bigger phones are better overall, I don't mind switching back in a year but those phones better be good.

How are the defectors addressing migrating music, photos, etc. Apple did a good job of closing up the system, and it's the one thing that keeps me from jumping. I just don't want the headache of migrating all that ####.

Agree completely. I could sell my 5 for enough to buy a nexus 5 to try out but moving stuff seems a pain.

For me it's not music (I use Spotify) or photos (they're already all on my computer via iCloud). It's all the apps I've purchased that I'd need to re-buy on Android or whatever. That's probably the only thing that will make me pause next time I'm due for an upgrade.

How much did your data usage go up once you adopted spotify?

Not sure. Not enough to put me over the cap.

I'm curious.... why wouldn't you use something like the flickr app for photos? Free TERABYTE of storage, access your photos on ios, windows, mac, android, etc. I guess I don't understand what the advantage is to keeping yourself locked into the apple ecosystem.

Started off with using iphoto on the macbook. then they integrated that with photostream. it's just been easy to stay there. now it's a matter of migration. i could take the time to move everything off the mac onto something like flickr so that i could get a different phone, or i could just go get the next iphone. path of least resistance. eta - its nice to be able to have your entire photo library automatically load onto the appletv too. im sure there's a workaround for that, but once again, it's been made simple for me. etax2 - i also have an ipad so theres some interoperability advantages

ThTs the thing. Perhaps android has more features and I'm an idiot for being part of the apple ecosystem. But all the pieces fit together really well and make it easy to stay.

What about all the digital movies I got for the kids when I bought the DVDs. I chose iTunes for all of them. Any way to convert that to android I I make the switch

Google Music or Play Music as it's called now. You can put all your songs from iTunes into the clould. Helps save memory space on your phone. You can even downlaod certain ones to keep on your phone to play offline.

Won't know until it goes live at 4:50. I'm hoping for $20 but it will probably be $30. I'm sure I'll buy it either way as my current one just broke.
$25. I'm going to give it a try.
Have it and love it. I carry a folded $20 bill, DL, CC, Debit/ATM card and Corporate Card and it's barely thicker than the iPhone 4 was in a regular case.

Ditching the old bulky bill-fold wallet has been liberating!

Awesome. I've been using one from iLid for a while but the quality is terrible. This one will be here tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it.

A friend of mine offered to sell me his 1 month old iPhone 5C (guessing 16gb) for $350. The problem is it's made for Sprint and I'm on T-mobile.

Question #1: Is $350 a good price for an almost (but not quite) new phone.?

Question #2: How hard is it to unlock it so it works on my carrier?

TIA

Sprint is incompatible with T mobile. Sprint is CDMA

You wouldn't be able to use it on your current plan since Sprint and T-Mobile use different technologies for their networks.

If you post this question in Hulk's thread about Ting/solavei he will set you straight. It may still be to your benefit to buy the 5c and get a Sprint prepaid plan.

Hope it is the pink one.

friend of mine and I were talking about this the other day. We're both seeing it. She just got back from the Apple store and they told her it's a virus. They told her to backup, reset to factory default, and restore. Sounds like BS to me but thought I'd pass it along.

Is that the first iOS virus?

Has anyone else been having this issue:

When I get a notification on my locked screen, sometimes I'll slide it to the right to open the app the notification is from and instead of opening the app, I get the white apple and the phone reboots. It happens to me pretty regularly and it's not associated with any particular app. It seems that any app will do it. Pisses me off. Only started happening since the upgrade.

It's been rebooting on its own a lot. Friday, for a 2 hour period, every call I made failed and I could only send/receive iMessages, even though I had full bars on my phone.

I need a car charger and a second lightening cord as well for travel. Do I go apple, or are there generics out there that work just the same. I don't want some cheap cord/charger frying my battery.

You can get some none Apple cords and chargers but make sure they are apple certified. There are a lot of lot of generics out there that wont work.

I bought some Amazon Basics lightning cords and have been very happy so far. They seem to be very durable and have worked perfectly. They aren't as cheep as some other cords but they are apple certified so you know they will work or Amazon will make it right.

I just got approval from AT&T to be able to unlock my 5. Their instructions mention connecting to computer, opening iTunes, backing up then restoring and my phone will be unlocked. I've used only iCloud and no computer iTunes for about 3 years now. If I backup to iCloud, erase then restore from iCloud, will that be the same?

Is the iphone5 for ATT and Verizon now the same? My employer said I could be on their cell plan, but it's verizon, and I am ATT. Am I going to need a new phone?

I'm no expert, but AT&T and T mobile and maybe a couple more use SIM cards on a GSM network and if carrier unlocked, your phone will work across those networks. Verizon, sprint, C spire and others use CDMA networks and the phones don't use SIM cards. So I think you need a new phone.

Short answer no, you will need a new phone for Verizon.

Battery issue seems to be getting worse. It shut down on me at 21%, I plugged it into my charger, it turned on and read 44%. WTF?

Are you using your ipad charger (the big base one) to charge your phone. I've heard (don't have a link) from others that this can lead to problems.

For some reason I had thought Verizon switched from CDMA. I guess not.
