Battery issue seems to be getting worse. It shut down on me at 21%, I plugged it into my charger, it turned on and read 44%. WTF?
Yep, I've been having this exact problem as well, and it seems to have gotten worse recently even though I haven't installed any updates since it first started happening.

Are you using your ipad charger (the big base one) to charge your phone. I've heard (don't have a link) from others that this can lead to problems.
No, using nothing other than my factory received 5 chargers.

I know they recommend to reinstall, just don't feel like doing it, but after this morning shutdown at 21% I may give it a try. I miss Steve.

FWIW red dead shutdown is not based on the % remaining.

I remember you saying that before, but the 44% reading after plugging in is kinda strange isn't it? It's been shutting down at 9% then reading 20% after plugin, now it seems to have doubled in issue. Have had IPhones since the 3 and I've never experienced anything close to this until ios7 came out. There's gotta be something there, right?

Is the iphone5 for ATT and Verizon now the same? My employer said I could be on their cell plan, but it's verizon, and I am ATT. Am I going to need a new phone?
I'm no expert, but AT&T and T mobile and maybe a couple more use SIM cards on a GSM network and if carrier unlocked, your phone will work across those networks. Verizon, sprint, C spire and others use CDMA networks and the phones don't use SIM cards. So I think you need a new phone.
Short answer no, you will need a new phone for Verizon.
For some reason I had thought Verizon switched from CDMA. I guess not.
They have but their LTE is different than at&t so you will need a different phone and IIRC the Verizon 5S has a CDMA radio in addition to the GSM LTE one for fallback and roaming.

No. You are just going to have to trust me on this.

The reason you had the % jump is because your phone went in to relax while on the charger in red dead. It has nothing to do with the OS version.

Not buying it. I also have owned iPhones since 3, and never had this issue on the 3, 4 or 5 until I "upgraded" to iOS 7, and the same exact issue Billy Bats is describing also started happening to me, right after I installed the new OS.

I use the big ipad charger exclusively for my iphone5. No problems.

All of you guys with the charging issues is it a 5, 5S or 5C? I had a similar issue with my 4S but have had zero issues with the 5S.

Mine is a 5. It generally doesn't crap out unless in single digit % though. But it is increasingly random and definitely only started after going to OS7.

Mine is now starting to play the random "reboot for no reason" game, and is starting to hang in apps a lot more. ALL of which started happening after the iOS7 update.

Any of you iGuys want to try and help me out.

It's really an iPad question.

What hardware/app would I need to plug my electric piano and microphone output line direct into the iPad to record direct from the piano (or even my mixer) as opposed to just the stock mic?

Bonus question, can I record and also record video at the same time with said set up or would I have to record the video separate and layer them together later?

Trying to get some better quality recordings of my band for our YouTube channel.

Much appreciated if someone can help.

I get that and a screen scramble every so often as well.

These are are very similar to what I was experiencing on the 4S I had. My wife isn't having any of these issues on her 5 though. Very odd.

Having same issues as people here. When my iphone 5 gets near 20%, it has a tendency to just shut down. If I let it rest a bit and reboot, it sometimes has 30% battery showing. This has been going on for awhile (since September I think) and last night it did this when I'm pretty sure the battery read 40+% remaining.

Been having a different issue lately though. The lightning cord doesn't appear to connect well with the phone so there are many times when it's plugged in and won't charge. If I push or wiggle it around a bit, I can get a connection and a charge but not sure how much longer that's going to last.

I have a 4s and have been lazy about deleting enough photos to free up the 3.8 GB needed to update to iOS 7.

Is it still buggy enough not to warrant the upgrade? My iPad has been solid on iOS 7 since release.

I've noticed this a lot lately, too. Strangely enough, I notice it more often in the freezing cold weather. The other day, I went out to shovel the snow while listening to music. When I went out, the charge was at 45%. After about ten minutes, the phone shut down. I went inside, plugged it in and before I even got back outside to start shoveling again, the charge was at 39%.

I see you're in Philly, so I know we have the same temperatures to deal with.

capacity is temp dependent. Low temps change cell impedance which changes capacity.

I don't doubt this. But I never had this issue before. Last year, the same phone I have now worked fine outside in cold weather. Ever since the new iOS came along, it seems to have messed with the battery. Not sure if it's just me, though.

I had the same issue yesterday, was out in the cold with the phone in my pocket. Took it out to use the flashlight, battery meter was right around 50%. Turned on the flashlight, and the phone shut off. Went inside a few minutes later, turned it back on (without plugging it in or anything) and it came on and displayed 40-something % battery life.

Somehow my and my wife's 3 and 4 never mysteriously shut down in the cold while displaying 40+% battery life remaining. I get that you're an apple guy but it's silly to pretend that there aren't some issues with this phone/OS. It doesn't "just work" like it used to and it's becoming increasingly frustrating (I'm also having the same issue as Aaron above where the lightning connector has to be in there *just right* for it to charge). I had the 3, the 4, now the 5, and assumed I'd just keep buying iPhones as long as they kept making them, but I'll be looking at what else is out there when I'm up for an upgrade.

Good point about the cold, that's exactly when mine went down too, right after I came back in from shoveling. Been reading a lot of the apple forums and this isn't a small issue, there are a lot of people experiencing the same problems. It all seems to come down to the battery itself. Some genius bars blame it on firmware, while other visits replace the batteries. However anytime someone with this problem has replaced the battery, the shutdown issues go away. I've read Apple charges $79 if you're out of warranty, while you can buy the battery and tools to replace it yourself for $15. Sounds like Apple went el cheapo on their latest round of batteries.eta: if your phone does shutdown unexpectedly and you don't have access to a charger, you can get it back on by holding down the home button and power button at the same time. It may take a couple tries (took me 4), but you will see the apple logo and it power up again.

Having the same exact problem as others have mentioned. I have the iphone 5 with updated IOS. I have found that taking videos causes my phone to shutdown more than any other application.

FYI... not necessary if you update it via iTunes.
What a pita. Had to do a full restore. Still not all my apps and no music. Work to be done. Suxors.
Sorry dude... worked like a charm for me...

No problem not your fault. It needed to be done. I have the new iOS now but just need to add in the stuff that's missing. Seems pretty random which is odd for a computer.

Anybody use their iPhone 5 generation phones as a 'hotspot?' Thinking of buying a new iPad, and may drop the cellular capability. (savings!) Then use the iPhone as a hotspot for the new iPad.

As I understand it, your phone looks like a wifi, does it flow easy if say, you move out of the house?

TIA,

It's a fairly easy jailbreak tweak. Carriers want upwards of 30 bucks for the privilege of selling you something you already bought, if you are just wanting to go that route.

If you don't hate money and don't want to jailbreak there are several wifi hotspots that you can buy with lots of data for far less than the carrier rates.

I am buying a new iPhone 5s, and with Verizon's 'Share Everything Plan' I believe you can share data with 'non-cellular' devices. No need to jailbreak.

My iPhone 5 works great as a hotspot. But I am in Canada where the carriers make no attempt to control this (largely because we don't have quality unlimited plans here). Hotspot is a bit of a battery hog though, lasting only around 4-5 hrs, so make sure you are near a plug or have a portable battery pack.

With CSpire it's included. Well.. You're supposed to pay for the "Tethering Pack" but they've never charged me for intermittently heavy use of the Hotspot functionality.

Looked at CSpire, nice prices, but I think you need to be in that area to use them. (I'm near DC)

Yes, Verizon plan includes hotspot. No need to jailbreak. It works reasonably well.

Yeah, like 50-60% of time has to be in their service area on average. Wish they'd get 4G rolled out in Memphis though

I have an old AT&T unlimited account so no tethering for me outside of jailbreak. I use a free version of TetherMe on my 5 and iPad Air. A little buggy, but it works and it's free (it is usually a fee app).

For those with the battery %/shutdown issue, I seem to have gotten it under control. Pretty sure someone suggested it in here, can't remember who to give props too, probably culdeus...

but when it shuts down on you prematurely, power it back on by holding down the home button and power button. It took me four attempts so keep trying but it will power up, once powered up run it down as far as you can get it then charge to 100% with power off. Since I did that I have not had any premature shutdowns or percentage changes when plugging in before it drains down to 1%.
