The Apple iPhone Thread (5 Viewers)

any thoughts on a price drop being likely?  Held off on rumors, if this falls to 800 i'm all over it
I'd be surprised with much of a drop. Certainly won't go from $999 to $800 for a long time, i.e. at least one more gen already out.

I jumped on the 8/8 plus with the BOGO offer since I was adding a new line soon anyway.

I have a 6+ and anything smaller would require going to glasses.  Every year I can kick the can down the road having to keep up with readers is a bonus.
I hadn't been paying attention to the hubbub about them slowing down older phones (6,6+,6s,6s+) with aging batteries, but if you still have the original battery, you might want to take advantage of the reduced price for battery replacement they are offering to apologize.  $29 instead of $79.

My wife had her 6s battery replaced already because it was one of the ones they recognized as having a battery issue so replaced it free.  But my daughter has been complaining a bunch about her 6 lately and I'm lucky I didn't give in and get her a new phone if all it takes is a new battery to speed it back up.

So what is everyone’s thoughts on the latest Apple Watch?  I had the first generation and wasn’t a fan mostly due it not being waterproof and not having a GPS.  I received a Garmin Fenix 5 for Christmas and it’s just not my thing.

Also.... what are everyone’s thoughts on the AirPods.  I leave Bose Wireless SoundSport right now.  The sound is amazing however I feel like I would use the AirPods more often.  Throw them in my pocket and roll out.  My wife has sort of confiscated my Bose and gave me her Jaybirds so I am good for exercising purposes.  Th AirPods would be more conference call music at work, etc...
AirPods are great (I was initially skeptical about the whole wireless earbud phenomenon but am now a convert).  Being able to charge the AirPods multiple times in the case before having to plug them in is awesome (and they charge very fast).  Only downside switching from the Bose Soundsports to the AirPods is that the Bose headphones would automatically connect to both my iPad and my iPhone so as soon as I turned them on they were ready to go regardless of which device I was using. Unless I’m doing something wrong, the AirPods are only connected to one device at a time. So if I switch devices, I have to go into settings to reconnect to the AirPods. That’s an annoyance.

You should be able to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center and switch audio output to the AirPods.

Hmm, I don’t see that option in the control center of either of my devices (both running iOS 11).  In any event, that is still an extra step that wasn’t needed with the Bose headphones.

Edit:  I see now. I swipe down to access the control center, tap on the audio icon in the music box and then select the input. About the same number of taps/swipes as going into settings I think.

Got a x. Anyone have any luck/solutions with a wallet case or phone pouch that can still charge wirelessly and also attach to magnet car mounts ?  I’d like to avoid a case with a cover
I have an 8, but figure this should work for you too.

I bought some magnetic plates for the case so they would attach to the mount. You have to figure out where in the back your phone gets the power from the Qi (on the 8, it is on the top) and then attach the plate appropriately (bottom on 8). Test it with tape or something before attaching the plate permanently.

HTH. If you want tomorrow I can post a picture.

I can charge wirelessly with my Incipio stash back case, but I’d be worried about affecting the credit cards by using a magnet mount.

Thanks BB.  I was looking at the Bose wire free that just came out, but not sure I want to drop $250 on them.  AirPods in route.

Apple Watch is awesome. Love my Series 3. Posted my full thoughts in the Apple Watch thread.

They are also shockingly durable. It "MAY" have been thrown full speed into a wall and while the face separated from the body, the glass is intact and it still functions fine. I'm not sure HOW you could shatter the glass short of a pointed metal hit. Apple care will swap it out.

Who's the neanderthals if you are still carrying credit cards? My phone is loaded up with APllepay and i'm slinging laser cash everywhere I go. LOL
Never used Applepay the whole time I had an iPhone because it was so limited in where I could use it.  Now that I have an S8 with samsung pay that works everywhere that has NFC or a slide card reader I use phone payments all the time.  Only place I have not been able to use it is the Gas Station slide in readers.

I'll never understand wanting to carry your CC and ID on your phone.  I carry my phone around a lot more than my wallet - if I were to lose it and it had my CC and ID on it as well???  :X
Safer than losing your wallet.  Wallet they take what they want and use it.  Phone they have to hack into the phone then hack into the payment system.

Prefer only using when possible.

I say Active lifestyle the Garmin is the best choice.  Just want connection and cool apps then iWatch is the best of the bunch right now.

AirPods are junk to me never stay in and low sound quality and isolation.   JayBirds are my favorite workout headphones and I use them as my daily listeners also.

Wonder if someone can help me. I have - I think - an IPhone 6. It was working fine, then all of a sudden the screen went dark with just the little spinning circle in the center. I can't shut it down or get it to wake back up. The battery was full. The power on/off button does nothing, nor does the home button. Just the small spinning circle.

Any ideas? Is there a way to force it out of this?

TIA

Boot Freeze: http://osxdaily.com/2013/04/25/ipad-iphone-freezes-spinning-wheel-crashes/

Start with a hard reset and go from there. (Hold top/side and home until screen goes black THEN apple logo reappears

Figured this might be a good place to post it, but I upgraded two of my phones and maybe FIL passed in December so I’ve got 4 variations of 6/6 plus/6s iPhones sitting in my desk. I’m either selling them to GameStop or on eBay (which I’ve never done). I figured I’d give anyone a crack at them:

All of them have always had a glass screen protector and case, so none have any screen or body damage at all.

6 plus 128GB space gray - great shape has a glass protector and a ZVE brown wallet case (best wallet case I’ve ever had). This one is the best phone I have. I had that screen touch issue and the Apple store in the Fall just handed me a new (6 plus) in a box. Honestly wouldn’t waste the $29 on the battery replacement since the phone is basically new.

6s 16GB space gray - I need to keep one of these for my youngest son and I think this will be the one because it’s the newest of the smaller phones. The 6 plus is too big. Great shape case and glass protector since day one. If I keep it I’ll do the battery replacement just because it’s cheap now.

6 64GB space gray - needs the $29 battery replacement and has an issue with headphone jack. Not sure if it needs to be cleaned but my son always used the lightning adapter.

6 16GB silver - battery seems fine but for $29 I’d replace it.

I wont be selling till later this week so let me know if interested.

@stbugs, I might be interested in the last one, my dad may have lost his. I am confirming whether he still needs it. What are you thinking  for $$$?

ETA: Really, either 16GB would be OK, since he doesn't use it for more than a phone. What Provider are they on?

TIA!!

I’ll send you a PM.

Do you guys have any goto apps for making and sharing/synching grocery and other lists?  I want to be able to add things to various errand lists -- grocery, pharmacy, Home Depot, Costco, etc. so that my wife and I always have running lists that we both can edit.

My wife is on an iPhone and I'm on Samsung.  Google Keep works well for us.  I just set up a new google account we pretty much use just for sharing things like this.  It's easy to set up and edit a new checklist, or have other kinds of notes like written, voice, and photo, and even set reminders for both of you.

AnyList works awesome for us for this purpose. Instant live syncing with notifications (wife just added bread to weekly grocery list A). Several different list themes/types. Customizable lists. Customizable sharing among groups/individuals. Etc. it’s great.

I have a 6 and it is in perfect condition (thank you Otterbox!!). Magically, it hit the two year mark and now I am stuck with a phone whose battery dies before I get to work every morning . Ok, I can pay the $29.00 for the battery, but the DIY YouTube video to replace it looks like brain surgery—did any of you find other options??

Nice, easy transaction with @stbugs, bought the 6/16gb. Already delivered to my folks up in Boston.

Apple is replacing them for you for that cost. call them.

Wifey is getting ready to upgrade from her iphone 7 to the Iphone X.  We own the Iphone 7 outright, and I think i'm going to give it to my Dad.  Is it a no brainer to get the $29 battery upgrade before giving it to him?  I should just say the battery is inconsistent, and I can get it replaced for $29, right?

Pretty much. They will run some tests to confirm its performing below a certain level, then replace it

Do you know if this is something you walk in (with appt) and they do then, or is it something that takes a bit (days or so?)

I believe the battery change takes maybe an hour, but I imagine an appointment will decrease the wait time befor the swap. It all depends on how busy they are I guess. Sorry I know that’s not much help.

Thinking about if my dad will need to replace his, want to give proper info. I will check with Apple.

Thanks

You need to call and see if they have any left. I was told mine may take until march or april (in January) but it just arrived yesterday at the store and I must go in this week or they will give it away.

I REALLY love this phone. It’s pretty much perfect. If you’re on the fence about getting one... make the leap. Playing with older non-full-screen models feels awkward now. Display is just massive and gorgeous. Battery life is great. Speakers are awesome. Interface is fast/snappy as hell. Great great phone.

Thanks. I have an old 6 that needs a new one, but getting to the store ia a PITA, so I will probably mail mine. But the one that my dad got from stbugs is in ok shape, so we will probably go with the ‘make an appointment when you can method.’

Thanks

Is this the general iphone thread?

I just got a 7 from work and would like bluetooth earbuds for phone calls.  I like the apple type of earbuds for calls, but I can't seem to trust anything I read on Amazon anymore with respect to reviews.  Whatcha got?

And no I'm not buying earpods for $160.

The AirPods are worth every penny. Seriously.

They sound great, the function is great, they hold a charge great.  One of the reasons I liked them initially was because the regular Apple wired headphones always felt very comfortable to me and didn’t fall out—these are the same shape and are great in that respect to.  So if you like the regular apple wired EarPods, this will also be a good fit.

I use mine every single weekday several times a day, for music during commutes, for taking phone calls, and they’re awesome.  I’ve easily got my money’s worth.

I 2nd Oats AirPod endorsement.  My wife, brother & I have gone through probably 8 different kids of ear buds, both wired and unwired in recent years.  We are unanimous in our belief that the Airpods are not only the best ear buds out there, but it’s also the best apple product since the iPad.

Worth every dime.

They seem easy to lose.  I mean, at least the ones with connecting wire have some mass.  Is this not an issue?

I take care of my gear, but, this is my concern with them.

I have had the following:

Jaybird X3 - waterproof tie for best overall sound with Bose.  Longest battery life.

Bose Soundsport Wireless - Waterproof tie for best overall sound with Bose.

AirPods - Most convenient.  I can throw them in my pocket and toss them on when I have a quick call etc.

Klipsch S4i - Best bang for the buck but wired.
