The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

Another dumb question.  I have the 6S - I bought this phone outright, comes Tuesday from Apple.  Will I be able to set it up with icloud and start using it right away or will I have to go call Verizon or go to Verizon/Apple store.  I believe the $30 activation was lumped in.  Will I be able to make calls on it right away?

I currently have the 6s plus (64gb) and have an opportunity to upgrade to the 7 (128gb, not plus) for free. Is this a good move? Smaller screen and no headphone jack would certainly be a downgrade for me, but are the other upgrades worth it?

I would say no if it was me. I actually still have a 6+ and I’m waiting for my X to arrive.

To me, why bother for the smaller screen and marginal differences elsewhere?

eta: Didn’t notice the larger storage size at first. If you’re not thrilled with the plus size and need the extra GB, maybe do it then if you aren’t locked in to a longer contract or more payments. I always buy the largest storage and it’s never enough.

This was driving me bonkers.  Finally figured out they fixed it with a patch, but super annoying for a few days.
The way I fixed it prior to the patch was to use text replace where you replace “I” with “I” and it did the trick. Just in case it comes up again.

Is there a good Iphone X case? My old otterbox defender was great.  Now my new Otterbox X defender case came in and it doesn't protect the screen?

I hate having to by screen protectors and put them on.  I want a good otterbox case or similar that covers the screen.  Why would they get rid of the screen cover built into the cases?

No way do I want to hide this gorgeous phone in a massive otterbox style case.

Went with this. Very solid basic minimalist case. If this case fails, I have insurance.

Nice lip around face just enough to protect the screen.
Good intimate fit, but not impossible to get on and off
Easy access to rockers/buttons
Back cutout for camera protrudes just enough to protect it.
Color looks great on the phone.. almost looks like part of the phone.

Back does show fingerprints/smears.

It's the simple things sometimes.  By trying to eliminate the bezel, they create the notch, which eliminates a number of things you were always used to being able to see immediately when you look at your phone - battery percentage, whether Bluetooth is active, and whether your alarm is set.  Is eliminating the bezel cool?  Sure.  Are face recognition and a much-improved reverse camera great advances?  Absolutely.  But those require the notch, and implementing the notch results in elimination of some of the simple things that we have grown to expect.
They should have used that wasted space of the notch to just permanently display those types of phone status items, therefore eliminating the odd video layout. Also should have kept it the bigger 6+ size imo.

Too many issues. Will not purchase a new phone until next year unless my 6+ ####s the bed. Do not think I would spend $1000+ on this X though at all.

I did a lot of research and spoke for days with the biggest Apple geek I know about what is best for me, and got a Iphone 8.  I've owned a 4, 5, and 6 of different specs and I hate android with a passion.  I'm not a high-end user, I don't need a Ferrari I need a good Honda that will pile up miles at a reasonable cost.  Going from 16GB to 64GB was the biggest selling point, I want to stream videos and store photos and videos.  So looking at my memory and seeing I have 3/4 of open space is huge, although I must say that the new button is going to getting some used to.  I keep phones 3+ years, so I think the 8 is the right choice.  X looks great but I just don't require all the pomp and circumstance, the 8 was a better value for me.  :2cents:

I bought this and liked it, but it's a bit slippery for me.  Looks nice, but the Otterbox Symmetry was the right fit for me.  I'm officially using this is my primary backup so good purchase.

Love the IPhone 8, I guess I'd like the PLUS but my eyesight is good and I've been grinding away for 4+ years with an iphone 4/5 so this is an improvement.

Interesting. This one is a bit “slick” in Hand. #nohomo

So the otter box has a bit more grip to it? I may grab the symmetry in clear to give it a shot on your Recc.

It’s ribbed for pleasure.

I ordered three others I didn’t like and also got one of those super reinforced Otterboxes from work. They were either too slippery, not substantial enough, or in the otterbox’s case, too ridiculously bulky.

You neanderthals still carrying wallets enjoy your otterboxes.  Those with running water and sewer who ditched wallets years ago should consider this TwelveSouth case.

I don't like having my credit cards showing on the back of my phone.  I have this case for my X and absolutely love it.
Agree that the cards showing is suboptimal. I had Inciopio's "Stowaway" case for my iPhone7 and loved it, though the tradeoff is that those cases are a bit bulky, which is why I went with the 12South case for the X.

Yeah, they do add a bit of bulk.  I've owned both the Stashback and the Stowaway and find the Stashback to be the superior design.

Ordered a iphone 8 for my daughter for Christmas.  With the touchID, is it better to wait for her to set it up herself on Christmas day, or should I try to set it up ahead of time so that it's ready to go?  Provider is Ting (MVNO).

Set it up but just skip the part where you enter fingerprint id.

OK thanks.  I was hoping to avoid waiting for a customer service rep on Christmas day, but after more research, looks like I can activate via internet, so I should be in good shape either way.

You raise a valid point... Those cases are popular with older asian women around here. Plus, showing off all my credit cards is indeed a tempting proposition. I think I'm sold.

One slot for ID, one for a credit card.  I understand not liking the aesthetics of those being visible, but there isn't a security concern, as I don't leave my $1200 phone lying around in public.

Ok, so AT&T is now having a buy an 8 (or 8 plus) and get one free. My oldest and I have had our 6/6 plus since they came out and his battery is awful and I’ve had to get mine replaced for the screen issue and I’ve noticed the current one being a bit weird but it seems just slow sometimes. That seems to happen with upgrades for the older ones (not surprising).

The catch is you have to open a new line. Is it possible to swap phone numbers in your family plan? My son doesn’t want to change numbers and if my other son swaps then he gets the new phone which defeats the purpose. My wife and I can’t switch because both use those for our work numbers.

I'll never understand wanting to carry your CC and ID on your phone.  I carry my phone around a lot more than my wallet - if I were to lose it and it had my CC and ID on it as well???  :X

No. iPhone X comes with standard 1A USB Charging block and standard USB>lightning cable.

Power delivery BEFORE Quickcharge iOS update from Apple... Per my testing:
• Standard 1A USB Block + Standard USB>Lightning cable - 5-6 Watts
• This 10W Qi Charger with included Qualcomm quickcharge block: 6W (reportedly should increase to 7.5W with update)
These cheapo 2A charging blocks with standard USB>Lightning cord: 13W
• Nice 29W Charging block plus generic USBC>Lightning Charging cord: 14W (reportedly should increase to 20+W with update)

The projected increases with update are just what I'm reading. I can't guarantee anything obviously.
So break this down a bit more, after your testing what is the best wireless charger/cord out there now?

Did the rules on jailbreaking phones change?  I broke my ATT phone (iPhone 7) and have an old TMobile 7.  Can I get the mobile phone to work on ATT?  Thx

iPhone 6

- daughter dropped it in the snow

- phone would not turn on

- repair shop did a ‘dry-out’ for $50

- phone worked at first

- home button stopped working

- soon, phone shut down and said it needed to be connected to itunes

- iTunes recovery tried to update the phone. Failed.

- iTunes recovery tried to restore the phone. Failed.

- looked for 3rd party programs, they can all connect to the phone just fine, but of course want you to pay before fixing it.

So, if the iTunes recovery can’t fix it, is there any hope that any of the 3rd party apps can?

HALP.....☹️☹️☹️

I see it the exact opposite way. If I carry a wallet around and lose it, how long will it take me to notice that I lost it, and how do I ever find it?  But if my cards are in my phone, not only am I far less likely to lose it (given that my phone is something I consult with great frequency, I would discover that it is missing far, far sooner than I would a wallet), I would also be able to locate it immediately using Find My iPhone. I view having my cards on my phone as an almost virtual guarantee that I won’t lose them.

I have a 6+ and anything smaller would require going to glasses.  Every year I can kick the can down the road having to keep up with readers is a bonus.

By that logic would you be better off carrying your phone, a wallet just for your credit card, a wallet just for your ID, a key ring just for your house, a key ring just for your car, etc etc? That would minimize the inconvenience of losing any ONE of those items.

Me, I'd rather carry one thing and try not to lose it.

BTW, you also can stop carrying around that giant phone book with a highlighter. Just google "contact list" and thank me later.
:lmao:

Seems like too much of a PIA with multiple business and my bookkeeper has some valid reason why she does want people texting her phone photos of receipts.  That said, thanks for the suggestion, I'll revisit it later and see if I can develop a process to make it workable.

So what is everyone’s thoughts on the latest Apple Watch?  I had the first generation and wasn’t a fan mostly due it not being waterproof and not having a GPS.  I received a Garmin Fenix 5 for Christmas and it’s just not my thing.

Also.... what are everyone’s thoughts on the AirPods.  I leave Bose Wireless SoundSport right now.  The sound is amazing however I feel like I would use the AirPods more often.  Throw them in my pocket and roll out.  My wife has sort of confiscated my Bose and gave me her Jaybirds so I am good for exercising purposes.  Th AirPods would be more conference call music at work, etc...

The AirPods are amazing.  Best apple product since the iPhone.

Just ordered a pair.  I tried them on today and was impressed by the sound.  The old EarPods would never stay in my ear, but these were well in there.

I love Moshi cases. I have this. Also traded in my 16GB 6 and got $125 for it, which works for me. My wife needed a longer cord for her 7 and got her a Belkin 10 ft lightning cord but was wondering if I should get a new block as well? Person in the Apple store seemed to think it didn’t matter but she was new.

Got a x. Anyone have any luck/solutions with a wallet case or phone pouch that can still charge wirelessly and also attach to magnet car mounts ?  I’d like to avoid a case with a cover

Apple block is only 1A

definitely Buy a 2A charging block if you are concerned about charging speed. They’re cheap as ####

I'm on iPhone 4s.  No reason to change.  Works fine.

Weird to me that our customers that are worth $100m+ are on flip phones, and the people that are struggling to get by have the newest phones.  I'd guess the rich flip phone users pay others like me to worry about their stuff and don't see the value in the newest gadgets.
