The Apple iPhone Thread (4 Viewers)

I came in thinking I would hate Face ID, I am really liking it though.
I guess it depends on how you use the phone. I'm annoyed that I have to pick up the phone from the car cradle to open it - it's too far away to unlock. With Touch ID. I could just press the home button while it's in the cradle.

Finally back in town and will be picking up my X 256 at the Apple store right after work. Eager to try. My 6 was infuriating this past week with hiccups/hangups/crashes thanks to iOS11 update.

Hands on: first impression:

Love the heft/weight

Perfect size.. still 1-hand-able

TrueTone feature is annoying, shifting from warm to cold hues. Turning that #### off.

Display is stunning next to my 6.

Very very snappy UI but I was coming from a beat up 6 that was on its last leg.

Face ID sets up in seconds and seems to work pretty much instantly for me. I dig it.

Lack of home button is not an issue. In fact, within an hour I went back to my 6 and caught myself trying to swipe up rather than hit home. I think it will be a seamless transition for folks.

notch is not an issue. Checked out some full screen video. If you’re looking for it you notice it.. but it’s unobtrusive.

One question. How do I sync over new photos from my 6 that were taken since my last backup?

Thx

Why not just enable airdrop on both and select the ones you want to copy? Quickest I would think if that’s all you need.

I’ve used the Zagg Invisible Shield on my 6+ and my kids’ 7’s. Thought the tempered glass of the Glass+ or Sapphire took the brunt of a drop, shattering the protector but leaving the phone unharmed. This was the case with my daughter where I replaced a shattered protector under warranty from Zagg, but it also has a Tech21 Check case on it for absorption but still minimal.

In looking at options for the X which I won’t get until December, I watched this test https://youtu.be/CuKfke6aQeI of three screen protectors. $.50 - $55.00. From 6’ up all three phone screens shattered, but that was with no case.

I really want to use the naked X like I did my iPhone 3G, or with front and back glass protectors, but it seems way too slippery and the repair cost for the glass back is obscene. Probably do another Tech21 case and a screen protector.

What are you guys rolling with for accessories and protection? Icon, did you buy the items you linked to earlier?

I purchased an Incipio Stashback for my X.

Ok i assume this is an iOS 11 thing but the new keyboard that conforms to allow you to type with one hand is a game changer!  Can be toggled by holding the globe or smile on bottom left.

I ordered two cheap 10W QI chargers to try,

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L8FY1C8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_vIraAbGZ69Y1K

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N8RF946/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EHraAb1PYFP6N

And got some 2.1A 5V (10W) charging blocks that SHOULD deliver the 10W (well, 7.5W) needed for Apple’s Qi High Speed charge:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074S53C98/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ZKraAbPAEA6HE

For corded quick charging I hear you need 29W:

Charging block:

Anker USB Type-C with Power Delivery 30W USB Wall Charger, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y427WT7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_LNraAbNT7Z17T

And USB C to lightning cable:

USB-C to Lightning Cable, Metrans USB 3.0 Type C to Lightning Sync &Data Cable Cord

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071ZFDJ74/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wOraAb127MAQG

DISCLAIMER: No idea if any of this will work for high speed as advertised.. will report back Thursday.

For a case: I got the speigen Ultra hybrid case for now. Looking for something minimalist to start.

Accidentally found a spotlight search screen by dragging from right edge in a sweeping left and down arc. Easier that reaching across to left and pulling overf the widget screen

3 days in and I just realized that the flashlight and camera buttons on the lock screen are force touch  nice feature

Coming from the 6, the X is great. major upgrade

Agreed... can't tell you how many times I'd see a photo opp, grab my phone out of my pocket and fumble to open the camera only to miss the moment. This was exacerbated by lag on my 6 once I upgraded to iOS 11.

Face ID works really great. I actually just just had my hand in front of my mouth coughing and an alert prompted me to pick up my phone. Opened up up problem. As others have said, Simply tap and swipe up and by the time you're swiping up it's scanned your face and is unlocked and opening.

Also... the front facing stereo speakers are legit. I bring my phone into the shower in the morning listening to podcasts or music and usually my 6 struggled to fully drown out the shower sound. This morning the X had me turning the volume down. Added Bonus of not having to worry about it getting wet.

When opening:

Swipe up from body/center of screen to see notifications
Swipe up from lower edge to open to homescreen

Not sure if everyone knew that. Nice touch.

Initial impressions:

- Have to agree that the screen does seem smaller than a Plus given its narrower dimensions

- When watching 16:9 movies, the viewable screen actually is smaller, as the taller but narrower screen results in letterboxes on the sides in landscape format

- You can double tap on the video to fill the screen, but that results in cutting off the top and bottom of the video, which is unacceptable

- Net result of the above is that the screen is noticeably smaller than a Plus for watching videos - that's a bit of a bummer

- Phone size is really great for one handed use

- The hand gestures are very intuitive and easy to learn, so I don't miss the home button at all . . . BUT:

- That only goes for portrait mode.  I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate around when using the phone in landscape mode.  Not nearly as intuitive.

- Video quality is really nice, but I can't really tell much of a difference unless I'm doing a side by side comparison.

- Speakers are MUCH improved

- Face recognition works very well pretty much all the time except when it's in my cradle in the car.  Probably for the best

- Notch is really not a big deal.  It is completely unobtrusive in portrait mode, and because of the letterboxing described above, it doesn't interfere with videos

- The cameras (both front and rear facing) are amazing - huge upgrade from my 6 Plus.  Portrait photos are really cool.

If you liked the fancy swirling graphics from the commercial and apple release, they are available as live wallpapers:

Download them here: https://imgur.com/gallery/oSQll

Use an app caled "Live Maker" to open the videos and convert to live wallpapers.

Go into control panel > wallpapers and set them as your lock screen wallpaper.

To view motion, force touch the lock screen when the phone is unlocked. They are not animated full time due to battery constraints. To my knowledge they cannot be animated as the wallpaper for the home screen.

Apparently the new wallpapers will be part of IOS 11.2 which I’ve heard will be released in the next few days.

Thanks for the feedback bb.

For the gesture stuff, would you say this is overblown? https://www.fastcodesign.com/90150025/the-iphone-x-is-a-user-experience-nightmare

And sorry if honda. Just saw the last few pages here.

Yes very much overblown.  It took me a couple hours to get them down and another day or two to become habit.

I now pick up my iPhone 6S (work phone) and find myself doing the gestures automatically (they don't work obviously - but the time to learn them is fast)

I only skimmed the article as it is WAY too long, but I think it’s completely overblown. The home button only did like three things on its own. Everything else (notifications, control panel, powering down, screen shot, restart, etc) required swipes and buttons other than the home button. So most of the actions on that visual guide weren’t operated by the home button at all. I think the gesture stuff is totally intuitive. After about five minutes, I had completely adapted and didn’t miss it at all. Of course, I never use Siri, so maybe it will take some folks a bit to get used to using the side button.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

Updated report:  Lots to like about the IPhone X. But I find myself really missing the screen dimensions of my 6 Plus.
I do feel the same in regards to my 7+.  I have about a week to make my final decision.  If I return I will probably exchange for an 8+.

This was my experience too. I was kinda shocked at how quickly I got used to the gestures. it feels almost more like you're "interacting" with the OS than just tapping a button. I genuinely think it's a nice improvement. I had the exact same experience (picking up my iPhone 6 and trying to swipe on it out of habit) a mere 24 hours later.

The only thing I don't love is having to hold down on the tiled apps before swiping up to delete, but I get why they did it.

Siri is easy. Still learning on screen caps, but it's easier to do one handed than the old way (required 2 hands).

I'm the resident phone-case-wallet-evangelist around my office. Losing the wallet is such a liberating move.
I wish I had the balls to make that leap. I just am too paranoid about losing both and being totally screwed. If you lose phone, you've got money. Lose money, you've got phone. Lose both, you're ####ed

I envy those who pull it off though.

Do you seriously carry around a plus now?
Hundreds of millions sold...so yes. I easily carry it in my front pants pocket.

When the Plus was first released I seem to remember this thread being pretty positive toward the larger size. Most who bought it liked it and some who bout the iPhone 6 wished they bought the Plus or exchanged the 6 for it.

Are you surprised that people like the Plus or just surprised that Joe has one?

For sure. Best phone I've owned.

You’ll be saying the same thing out the X.
Yep coming to say this. The X is a great iPhone. Now my previous phone was the 6s but the X is so much better.

Screen size is great for the size of the phone.

Speakers are wonderful

Face ID make you forget all about finger ID.

The bezel notch on top doesn't bother me at all.

The only negative and it's a small one is closing apps and switching between apps doesn't seem as easy as of yet.

Didn't plan to get the X this early as I wanted to hear reviews but I'm very glad I jumped in early.

My X hasn’t been delivered yet but of course I read about the various gestures. I held a X at the store yesterday for the first time and I felt at home using the gestures from the moment I picked it up.

ETA I’m glad I’m getting the Silver as I love the chrome look of the edge. The dark edge on the Gray is meh, although I suppose with a case on it the beauty of the iPhone is reduced anyway. Really a shame aesthetically.

Agree with all your points. But moving from the wider screen on a Plus takes some adjustment. Transitioning from a non-Plus I would think would be amazing.

Switching between apps takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s not bad. Closing apps is an abomination however. They have to fix that on an update.

The camera button force touch is fine I guess not sure it's any easier then swiping left unless I'm missing something.

Oh one more negative for me at least. You can't see the battery remain with a percentage. You do see it in the control center but I preferred it on the home screen.

Yeah, i’d Prefer having the percentage over the battery icon. Wish you could choose it as an option (like you can customize widgets on your Apple Watch).

Love the privacy notifications that only "reveal" when you look at them.

At first I thought it was a glitch until I figured out what was going on :bag:

Sooo I guess I'm over-insured on my phone.

I'm concerned about both drops (because I'm prone/active) as well a loss/theft (because I live in memphis, like to drink, and it's a $1300 phone).

I have Verizon Handset insurance ($7/mo aka $168 for 2yrs - $199 deductible) that I've had to use once with my old 6 (water damage). It's a great program and works quickly. It covers Loss, Theft, and other damage (including water). I'm unclear on if it covers screen shattering, or complete loss of functionality only.

WIth the all glass design and very expensive cost of replacement, I sprung for AppleCare ($199/2yrs - $29 screen - $99 other) as well. Now I'm second guessing that. I guess it comes down to if I think I'll break the screen within the 2yrs (one break will make it pretty much break even).

It seems overkill to have $184/yr in insurance on a $1300 phone.... but I AM someone who is hard on phones. I went through 1 warranty replacement, 2 screens, 1 water replacement in 2 years on the 6 (but his phone is water-resistant at least)... I'm weighing the best options. Thoughts?

Body is almost identical to the 6.. noticeably smaller than the phablet 6+.

Screen is technically larger than the 6+, but a taller/narrower aspect ratio that some don't like.
Is it technically larger?  It is in terms of diagonal length, but I'm not sure it is in terms of area.

I don't think that answers my question.  Do you have the length and width dimensions for each?
Sure, GB:

iPhone X: 2436 x 1125 = 2,740,500 px2 (32% more pixels)
iPhone 8+: 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 px2

iPhone X: (2436 px x 1125 px) ÷ (458 px/inch) 2 =13.065 inch2 [5.31x2.45] (about 1.3% larger surface area)
iPhone 8+: (1920 px x 1080 px) ÷ (401 px/inch) 2 = 12.895 inch2 [4.79x2.69]

iPhone X is a VERY slightly larger display in surface area, has ~30% greater pixel density, better contrast and color accuracy thanks to OLED.

HOWEVER there is the glaring issue for some that the screen is not 16:9 aspect ratio, and the phone doesn't utlize some of the landscape iOS UI like the plus series phones do.

iPhone 8 Plus: 4.79x2.69= 12.88 sq in

iPhone X: 5.31x2.45= 13.04 sq in
