For a $600 phone I expected a lot more.
Comments like this absolutely baffle me. Do you want it to do your laundry for you?Seriously, I was amazed at everything you can do with this thing, and how it does them all well. With one device that is smaller and lighter than I Treo, I can watch movies, listen to all my music, do e-mail, browse the web (in a way that actually is a pleasure, which I can't say for my Treo), use Google maps to quickly and easily find directions, restaurants, and traffic information, get movie times, keep my contacts and schedule ... oh, and make phone calls.Precisely what else would you want out of such a device?Again, baffling. Half of the negative comments in here are obviously from people who have an agenda and are looking for reasons not to like this thing. I thought it was an awesome device.
I am not saying the iphone sucks or that its not good at viewing the web. My point is for a $600.00 and a phone that was supposed to revolutionize phone/personal devices, it falls short. Here are a few things that I think the iphone should have or be able to do- No Java, Windows Media, Real, and Flash Video support - pretty sure that hurts the internet experience- you can open Word and Excel files on the iPhone, you can't edit them - this makes it usless for any business person- No instant message service - I use this far more then text messaging even though I know I am more then likely in the minority - You cannot remove its battery - well it is an ipod- It can’t send MMS picture messages - once again this is a major problem for me business wise- The camera has little or no options and is a major weak point on the phone- Ringtones - enough said- It only allows for a maximum of 1 picture to be attached to each e-mail you send- It doesn’t have a file browser/organizer - another downer for me- documents can only be viewed as attachments when they’re sent to your e-mail address, you cant save them - this is the 2nd biggest problem IMO- no voice dialing - thought this would be pretty much a given for a $600.00 phone- no sdk, no apps - the killer of all killers. The amount of applications one can get for the other high end phones is staggering. Apple approved ? Good luck- hows it work with your itunes ? - enough said- no gps - google maps is nice, but no where close to gps- works exclusively over Cingular's Edge data network, which is much slower than broadband, Treo 750 for Cingular's runs on a 3G network- gotta scroll through the entire address book instead of just touching the first letter of your contact. I currently have over 400 contacts in my treo - not funHopefully the iphone will have a 2nd generation and Apple will look at many of the things that are needed to make this a truely great phone. However for a person like myself, being able to browse the web and have a pretty interface just isnt enough for a user like me.

We get it, we get it .. you're a special agent that needs to utilize every facit of a Treo. (you're also in the 1%tile ..such nit-picking)Have fun with your Treo.. Do you want my old one?
:goodposting:
Man, people really need their freakin phone to do all that crap? I guess the better question is how important do you think you are?
:) Are you guys associated with Apple or something? That's an odd amount of defensiveness otherwise.I thought some legit shortcoming were being raised.
LOL, no I just think it's funny in a sad way that all of the hardcore business cell phone users keep coming into the thread to complain. It's not for those people. And it seems like they're offended that it isn't designed to meet their needs. The fact is that Apple is smart NOT to try to market the business users. It's a market that RIM, and to a lesser degree Palm, have already done a great job meeting. For Apple to try to take them on with their first generation phone would have been a horrible decision. It's much smarter to take on the softer non-business user market. And no, I don't work for Apple or have a bunch of their stock. In fact, I have stock in most of their competitors, like MSFT, GOOG, RIMM, and NOK. So Joe and other business users, please don't get this phone. It's not for you.

So, to recap....questions were asked around what is missing from the iphone that people would like to see with no specific audience mentioned, some business people listed what they'd like to see and other people got defensive and told said posters the phone wasn't made for them :lmao: Got it....I guess :wall:

For the record....I think it's a great inital phone, but priced way to high for what it is and they completely dropped the ball on customer service for those changing providers and those who wanted to keep their numbers. Fortunately, the marketing machine is a beast and has deflected price from value this time around and somehow spun this bad customer service into a good thing. I also think it's a matter of time before they try to target the business market...WAY too much money there to ignore it, but they knew this phone wasn't close to being qualified for the business world yet and smartly stayed away.

from my iPhone

Bluetooth - not very good can't hear messsages on my jawbone. And no voice recognition dialing

apps- I would like to edit XL and word.

Email- would like integration with calendar. Accepting and creating meeting.

I would like more storage too.

I like the iphone. It's not perfect. But it's the best yet.

- Flash is on it's way. They will flesh out the rest via updates.- ringtones are overated IMHO.

- Applications will also be added via updates.

- It works AWESOME with iTunes.

- Edge is faster than I thought. I can't complain.

- you could just tap the letter of the name on side of the screen. No need to scroll through everyone.

No I'm not an apple fanboy, or work for them. But what I need, the iPhone kicks all sorts of ###.

So, to recap....questions were asked around what is missing from the iphone that people would like to see with no specific audience mentioned, some business people listed repeatedly what they'd like to see and sarcastically called each other haters while other people got defensive tried to help the non-sarcastic posters by telling them the phone wasn't made for business users them  Got it....I guess

Another dumb question.

How does it work dialing from contacts? In other words, say you want to dial Joe Smith's cell. Do you go to contacts, get to Joe Smith and then click his cell number? How exactly does that work?

Second question: how exactly do you get to Joe Smith's contact info? Someone said something about scrolling through. You can go right to Joe Smith somehow can't you? (ie in Treo you just tap in joe or smi or the name of his company or whatever) How exactly does that work with iphone?

Thanks.

Yes, on the treo, you'd be able to type Y and see all the y's. Then yo narrows it down to that and then you further and then youn even more. Depends on how many contacts you have. I keep everything in my contacts so for me, I'd have to get to youn probably to see one screen full of the names with my guy being in it.But the thing I like about the treo is that I may not be able to remember his last name. I can type any word of his company name and it'll pull up too. If John Young works for ESPN, I can type in ESPN and find it. That's a big help to me. It also works with his first name. That's sometimes helpful if the guy had a unique first name.

Article in today's Daily News detailing how the 5th Avenue store had them available on Day 2, no waits, no shortages. Are people getting top dollar on eBay?
On Saturday there were roughly 1200 iphones on ebay selling anywhere from $800-$1500. I checked yesterday and it was close to 7000 iphones. I saw a couple of them get cancelled because the seller wasn't going to make a profit..
Point of concern might be an overestimation of the number of people willing to pay $700 for a phone PLUS the $300+ to break their current contract with existing carriers. Time will tell.
Typical scalpers. People made good cash off the PS2 and 360 due to low launch quantities, so they assume every hot product will go that way. Looks like Apple had plenty of units for their launch.I look forward to hearing release sales numbers.

ETA: While no official numbers have been released, analysts estimate that Apple has sold between 500,000 - 700,000 iPhones in the first two days.
There is no question sales are going to be through the roof. We'll never hear about all the returns though....wife was borderline ready to send hers back because of the crappy customer service she got and she's an incredibly patient person.
Please. If it's truely an issue, you'll hear about it. Reuters had already written about AT&T's activation issues and the AP is now reporting that the problems are clearing up. If there's a mass exodus to return them, the media will scoop it up. I'm guessing this will be a moot point, though. Fact is, most people are thrilled with the iPhone in spite of some difficulties. If your wife is fed up, by all means return it. No point in putting her through such trauma.
I don't think there will be a mass exodus at all. But I'd be willing to bet that 1-5% or so are returned...not because it's a faulty product, but because the customer service put the individual in a position to deal with getting it configured. As a matter of fact, my wife called about 45 minutes ago and said hers was going back. She can't justify the $700 price tag and half the web pages she wanted to get to don't work. Not sure which ones, but she's had enough. She's going back to her treo which does all the same stuff. Time will tell on the rest.
Just a follow-up, intial surveys show iPhone buyers are overwhelmingly happy with their purchase:
iPhone buyers have no regrets

By Edward C. Baig, USA TODAY

Early iPhone owners are overwhelmingly happy with their devices, a survey out Friday says, and Apple (AAPL) and AT&T (T) are luring customers from rivals as a result.

In one of the first such studies, 90% of 200 owners said they were "extremely" or "very" satisfied with their phone. And 85% said they are "extremely" or "very" likely to recommend the device to others, says the online survey conducted and paid for by market researcher Interpret of Santa Monica, Calif. The firm surveyed 1,000 cellphone users July 6-10.

Apple launched the combination cellphone, iPod music player and Internet gadget with much fanfare on June 29. AT&T is the exclusive service provider.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide marketing for the iPod and iPhone, said positive word-of-mouth reaction is "critically important" to any product, as it was with the iPod. "We're getting even greater reaction to the iPhone," he says.

Apple still faces challenges. The high cost of the two iPhone models — $499 and $599 — ranks as the No. 1 reason consumers interested in the device did not buy one, the survey says. Those consumers said they would pay an average of, at most, $180.

Owners said there's room for improvement. At the top of their wish list: longer battery life, faster Internet speed and more internal memory. Other factors, including the lack of a physical keyboard, were well down on their lists.

The iPhone is extending Apple's reach, the survey says. Three of 10 buyers were first-time Apple customers. For 40%, iPhone is their first iPod.

Apple could "change the physics in the phone market," if it is as successful building loyalty to the iPhone as it has been in the music and computer markets, says Gene Munster, senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray.

Interpret's survey also bodes well for AT&T. Half the buyers switched from another carrier. Of those, 35% paid an average $167 to break a contract. "We thought AT&T would be more of a barrier to entry," says Munster.

Another boon for AT&T: IPhone owners surveyed expect to pay about $35 more in monthly service fees compared with their previous cellphones.

Interesting. I find that shocking that 40% of the iphone buyers had never owned an ipod.I didn't think you could find a group of any sort of people where 40% didn't own an ipod. Much less the kind of people that would be buying an iphone. I still don't see that.

if i'm reading this correctly, it could be a big deterrent for me. you can only type one letter? there are probably 25-30 names that begin with the same letter in my phone book. using joe's treo example, can you not type "yo" for young?tia

Does the iphone search this way too?

J
bump. Anyone on this? Also, does anyone have a link or information on the calendar beyond just that it has one? I'd like to see screen shots and different views (month / week / day) and how appointments look and also how they're scheduled from the iphone. I guess I can go to the mall tonight to see if they have one but thought someone here might know.

J
You know you want it....just go get it! Watch the video at apple.com.

Thanks.

J
iPhone phone calls
So how exactly do you get to a contact? Say you have 1,000 contacts and you want to get to John Young.

J
From your home page...Press Phone (far left icon)

Press Contacts (2nd to left icon.. Favorites is the far left)

Press Y from the letters on the right side ...chose John Young from your Y's

Press Home, Mobile, or Work (whichever number of John's you wish to dial ...you can also text, edit, add to favorites, change photo or e-mail from here)

You can search contacts thru the SMS widget. Its the only way I've found so far. Just open SMS and start typing in a name and it will search your contacts for you to make a call.
Thanks dpeese,Sorry but I dunno what SMS widgets are. Do you mind explaining there?

J
http://www.apple.com/iphone/phone/Click on the 3rd icon in the middle right.

I'd enjoy SMS much more if it rotated as Safari does.

Interesting. I find that shocking that 40% of the iphone buyers had never owned an ipod.

I didn't think you could find a group of any sort of people where 40% didn't own an ipod. Much less the kind of people that would be buying an iphone. I still don't see that.

J
That surprised me as well. That's an expensive jump for first-timers, must be people that were intentionally waiting for an integrated device or owners of another brand of mp3 player? Lots of switchers in the survey: half of the buyers jumped carriers to AT&T and one-third were new to Apple products.

for JB..

me and the missus went to the apple store last night and attended "going Further" iphone training..

I learned that while you cannot search contacts conventionally, you can search them from creating an email....you begin typing in a name, or part of a name it will give you a selection to choose from.. it only searches on name or email. not by partial phone number..

also like that you can conference in 5 callers onto your phone..kinda cool

another thing I did like was when using google maps, once you find a listing, you can quickly add it to your contacts, with all the google map info directly populated...

things I want them come out with...

cut and paste, from any app to any app

voice dialing

calendar integration to email, it would be nice to turn any email into a calendar event

disk functionality - create folders - add files

download off the internet - I can pull down the audible and listen... I would have to sync less often - you can listen to the audible, streaming it.. but it craps out sometimes

Joe succumbs to the hype... :goodposting:

Bought one this afternoon.

Haven't got it going yet as I've got some other stuff I have to do. Will probably set it up tomorrow. Have some saved voice messages I have to figure out how to save on my treo before I cut it off.

Couple of thoughts.

The good: Interface is fantastic. It's a quantum leap forward in how well the touch screen works. Super responsive. And cool touches in how they give you the "real" feel of flipping through a wheel and thing turns just a tiny bit past where you want to go and comes back. No real value at all. But kind of cool.

It's pretty small. This was one of the bigger things for me. I refuse to carry a phone on a belt holster. So the treo in my pocket is kind of bulky. The iphone is much slimmer. The other thing you worry about with it in your pocket is scratching. We'll see how it fares after a few months but initial testing looks like it's pretty tough video of PC Mag guys scratching and dropping http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czCCavcnNd8

The photo organizer is super cool. I have that now in my treo under documents to go but it's cumbersome compared to iphone.

ipod features are obviously cool. I won't be able to ditch my normal ipod as I need more than 8 gig. But I can for see just keeping the "best of" stuff in music and that will be nice.

Internet is great. I'm a little pissed with the misleading ads about how you get the full non watered down internet and then in reality you don't get any flash content but it's light years better than my treo. You can actually read the FFA and it looks pretty much like the FFA. The zoom features and moving around work pretty much as advertised. Again, this goes back to the interface. Extremely good.

Small things. Things like the countdown timer are kind of handy. I'm sure there will be plenty of little things like this that are useful.

The bad:

Calendar looks weak. Compared to my treo which let me have tons of options with color coding appointments based on type and the ability to have lots of detail. iphone looks extremely basic on the calendar. My treo synchs perfectly to outlook calendar. Let's hope iphone does.

Contacts look weak. Looks like an after thought as you have to open the phone section to get to the contacts. I cannot believe they don't have a search contact feature. I'm still not certain it's not possible to find somehow. I have 1,500 :) listings in my contacts. I am worried I'm going to hate finding some of them with this. I hate the click wheel on the ipod. I think every artist I listen to starts with an R on down. Although the letter bar on the right is sort of handy so that you can get to a letter instantly. I would think this is something they will add soon. I'm interested to see how well contacts import from outlook.

No voice recorder. This is no issue for lots of people but I use the voice recorder in my treo daily. I'm going to have to figure out something here.

No tasks (to do) list. I found myself using my tasks feature in the treo less and less. I'm wondering how much I'll miss this.

We'll see how it goes once I get into it.

J

Oh yeah: :lookatmeIhavealotofcontacts: and :lookatmeIboughtaniphone:

Great news Joe. You bought one just in time for someone to come in and post about their problems with theirs!!! My slider no longer works to unlock the phone or power it off. Additionally, safari is no longer connecting to any wifi or edge. Lucky me.
Hold down the Home and Power button at the same time to reset the phone. The reset fixes it.

Here's what I like:

-screen

-ease of use

-functions

here's what I don't like:

-internet speed

-headphone hole size--I have high end shures and they don't fit

-battery

-keyboard--slight negative--not as easy as a blackberry

Apple sucks - seriously though my next phone is going to be 3G, especially if you are paying $400-500 for the device, personally I cannot justify the cost unless it has 3G in it. I am all over the BlackBerry 8900 when it comes out, they said Q4, we shall see.

I'm strongly considering moving from Treo to iPhone and it will be my first apple product. I've been doing just about everything the iPhone does on my treo for years, and I've been carrying all of my MP3s on a few SD cards and using my Treo to listen to them. Still, my Treo is starting to look like a dinosaur and although I'll probably be disappointed with my next phone in a lot of ways, I'll take the bad with the good. I'm paying very close attention to Treo converts...

bought a second jawbone.... got it paired... THEN i tried the old one... it paired TOO...

so now i have two jawbones.. my friend who lost his offered me 100 for it.. net loss 30... figured i prolly could more on ebay.. add back listing fees, and good karma from friends... this is a better solution..

now time to case shop... I like this one...

Hi none,Did you figure out what the problem was? My iphone won't recognize my jawbone either. :) Anyone?

Microsoft-Watch's Take on the iPhone:

Before reading any further, Microsofties and their partners should take out paper and a pen. Apple has done so much right with the iPhone—based on my experience, anyway— that they should take notes.

Hmm... the lack of 3G isn't a problem for him.
I get faster Web performance with EDGE on the iPhone than I did using 3G with the BlackJack.

Iphone log: day 17 -

Still love my iphone. Battery life is great. I use the ipod feature almost every day. Very pleased, still.

I'm paying very close attention to Treo converts...
Hi TYF,I'll try to give some feedback on that. Haven't set it up yet but maybe today. J
What carrier were you using on Treo?
Verizon.Why?J
Just curious. I've been very satisfied with Sprints high speed EDVO network (it's also very affordable compared to others). Curious to know how you compare Verizon's with the iphone

Anybody here use the belt clip for their iPhones?

I used to just keep my phones in my pocket since the belt clips always felt so bulky, but I bought this clip by Griffin and it's SO slim. It actually hides really well under my shirts for work. (unless they're tucked in.)

I give it 2 thumbs up.

Finally turned the iphone back in a couple of weeks ago. To be fair, it was mainly because of ATT's pathetic coverage.

The Apple store was cool and gave me full refund with no restocking fee. Couldn't ask for any better service there.

ATT was cool and said I was out of the contract. Let's see if they follow through.

Bought a Blackberry 8030 and love it. Actually like it better than the iphone.

Iphone was phenomenal for pictures. Uber cool to move and resize and scroll through.

But everything else was basically just ok.

Calendar was ok.

Email was bad compared to Blackberry.

Voice mail was very cool with the visual voicemail. Makes sense.

Battery was ok to weak.

If I'd been able to get coverage with ATT, I probably would have kept it.

But wasn't meant to be.

J
