The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

I need to bump this because my wife just bought me one for my birthday. I have a couple of important questions because it is a very expensive item and I dont want to keep it if it is not quality.

1. I have heard that 3rd party apps will be allowed on the phone. Someone please explain what that is.

2. Are people that have the phone still happy with it

3. Does anyone know when the next version is coming out and should we save the money and spend it when the new one comes out.

4. When people say the Edge is slow, how slow is slow. I have a T Mobile sidekick right now. Is the edge faster, slower or the same as the sidekick.

If anyone can answer those questions I would geatly appreciate it. It is a great present but we could use the money if it is not a great product.

I'll do my best to answer a few of these.1 - 3rd party apps are coming in Feb/March and it has not yet been determined whether or not you will have to pay for these apps or not, but most likely yes. There are 3rd party apps currently available for the iphone and they work great. 2 - Love it, enough said.3 - Hasn't been determined yet, I've heard Q2 of next year.4 - It's not that bad, but if you are on 3G now, you will notice a difference.

Thanks Green but a few follow up questions because I am not too savvy with tech. Can you please tell me what a 3rd party app is. I dont get it. What will be available in Feb and what is available now? Also how would I know if I am on 3G now or not. Thanks again for the answers and Im sorry for the lack if knowledge but thats why I come here

3rd party apps are basically applications created for the phone by people other than Apple. There a ton of different apps that have been created already, and once February rolls around, there will be even more.

Examples of 3rd Party Apps are an NES Emulator or an Instant Messaging client.

In Feb, Apple is providing developers with kits to create applications.

Hi Acer,My opinion of edge was it was terribly slow. I'm not very patient but it was almost unusable. Worked great when you could get off edge and on wifi somewhere. But just brutal on edge. And it wasn't just web. Email was really slow as well.My blackberry with whatever Verizon is blazing fast in comparison.I loved some of the features the iphone had but some things were really aggravating (like edge speed)J

Joe,Thanks for the reply. I actually read most of the 14 pages last night so I was well aware of the features you did not like. When you say long load times what are we really talking about. If I call up the FFA on my sideick it will load anywhere from 3-5 minutes. Is the Edge a lot longer then that?To all:Is the 3G something that can be fixed with a software patch or is it a hardware thing and Iphone I will never be 3GTo those that have it, is it worth waiting 6 months for the 3G or just open it now and enjoy itThanks to all for answering, I am still undecided what to do with what is an awesome present and I dont want to hurt my wifes feelings either

Not at all, it takes about 10 seconds to load FBG's and just about any other webpage.

It cannot be fixed with a firmware update, it is actually a hardware upgrade in the new phone.

Is it worth waiting for 3G?? Tough question, I told myself that I was going to wait because I know that 10 seconds will be cut down to 2-3 seconds, but I couldn't hold off any longer and made the purchase.

i have an iphone and i think its an amazing device. It has so many features that i use every single day. the internet is slow at times, but its a phone people we all need to remember that. My old sprint phone was like DEATH on the internet. Now I can surf FBG whenever i want and its not bad at all, obviously slower than your PC or mac at home, but it's above and beyond any other phone i have owned before

If I get some Apple gift cards for Christmas (which is what I've requested), then I may spend them on an 80G iPod since I don't have one. Then, I'll buy myself an iPhone at a later date.

Does anyone have an iPod touch here? I'd love to know how the WiFi is (as it compares to my Nokia 6700, which has a bad keyboard) and what storage capacity it has. I could look on the Apple site, but I'm too lazy right now.

ETA Touch only has 16G avl. I'll just wait for that on my iPhone. _

It's flash-based 8GB and 16GB, IIRC.

I am an iphone owner and to be honest....the novelty is starting to wear off. It does everything pretty well for my needs except.....MAKE A FREAKING PHONE CALL! I cannot tell you how many dropped calls I have had over the last month alone.

It take pretty good pics for a camera phone. There is a learning curve with the touch screen keypad when you text, but I'm used to it now.

My one gripe is the speaker phone and the volume on calls. I can barely hear anything sometimes.

Got my second one today. I cracked the display on my old one at the Hawks game last week--I still have some of the glass in my finger.

Has anyone hacked their iPhone? I have a question.
Shoot.
Ok, thanks Usual.Basically I hacked my iPhone, but I am an Att customer, and I want to update my phone once the new firmware comes out. I don't care much for the 3rd party apps and I'm not really concerned with putting them back on my phone. Do I have to do a full restore in order to remove the 3rd party apps or is there a way I can delete them off of my phone. Also, is there any way that I can save my photos/contacts/etc... on to my computer before I have to do a full restore?

I think a full restore is needed. I don't know of a way to take the individual apps off. as far as your pics, are you talking about the ones taken with the iphone itself? I rearely take any pics, so I don't know if you can dl them to your hd. My contacts stayed on the iphone after I did the restore since I sync'd them with Yahoo Address book. when you are in iTunes, sync them with either outlook or Yahoo, restore, and then sync them back to your iPhone. I hope this helps. If you need more help, there's a bunch of iPhone :football: 's at www.everythingiphone.comGood Luck!

Excellent, appreciate the help!

So check this out.... after taking Usual's advice I synced my contacts to Outlook and saved my pictures taken with the iPhone. I proceeded to try and update the phone just to see what would happen. So I started downloading 1.12 and as soon as it finished, it started updating my phone. So the update finishes and it tells me that it is ok to unplug my iphone. I unplug it thinking that all of my #### is going to be gone, and come to find out that EVERYTHING stayed on and all of my 3rd party apps are all gone (which is fine). All contacts, pictures, web bookmarks.... I couldn't believe it. :goodposting:

Anyone load 1.13 yet. It says you can add things to the home screen. I will try it when I get home
Yeah, you can move around and rearrange your home screen icons. You can add up to 9 pages of icons as well. What you can add currently are clippings from your favorite websites. It's pretty cool.

What do you mean by clippings. I thought you just add a link to the web site. Can you text more then one person with the update. I cant watch the video on apple because my school does not have flash. Were any of the 3rd party features announced

Yes, you can text multiple people at the same time now.And you can select a portion of the webpage to load instead of having it bring up the entire thing each time. For instance, if you go to the NYT website and only look at one section generally, you go there as normal, frame up the section you normally look at (zoom in or double tap) and then click the plus sign and add it to your homepage, and now whenever you click that button, it'll take you to the NYT website with the specific area framed like you want it.The best new feature, imo, is the "locate me" option and other improvements for the google maps app. Much better overall, and that feature makes it really nice.

The iphone is going to kick ### much more than it already does once the third party apps are released, but no, there hasn't been much discussion of what's going on with that other than early February.

Can't wait to update it tonight with 1.13!

How much are those apps going to cost - any talk on that yet?

I asked the same question to an Apple employee at Macworld yesterday. He says some will be free and others will probably cost the same as they are on other handhelds. He also said not to quote him ...so basically there is still no real info.I'd pay a pretty penny for Slingplayer on my iPhone.

Me too!

when does the new iphone supposedly come out?
Rumor is June, when the iPhone launches in Spain. Most likely, it will be a 16G version and not necessarily w/ 3G. Many people don't realize that 3G isn't as broadly available as they think; many/most 3G devices run off the EDGE/2.3.

How much on other handhelds? And wtf is slingplayer?

Tried to install 1.13 and I get an error message. Oh well, I guess I cant customize my home screen. Sometimes I love tech and sometimes I hate it

EVDO is everywhere on Verizon and Sprint. But Apple had to go with AT&T... They had a big fallout with VZW... They may move to Sprint, who knows....
