The Apple iPhone Thread (4 Viewers)

The iphone is going to kick ### much more than it already does once the third party apps are released, but no, there hasn't been much discussion of what's going on with that other than early February.
How much are those apps going to cost - any talk on that yet?
I asked the same question to an Apple employee at Macworld yesterday. He says some will be free and others will probably cost the same as they are on other handhelds. He also said not to quote him ...so basically there is still no real info.I'd pay a pretty penny for Slingplayer on my iPhone.
How much on other handhelds? And wtf is slingplayer?
Can get your cable/satellite feed sent directly to your phone or laptop with a slingbox. It is the single greatest invention of mankind. I am absolutely not kidding about this. It will change your life.

With the new iphone update you can add links to the homepage. Anyone make a FBG clip art? If so share!
I'd love to get the blackeyed joe but I don't know how to do that so I just have the default view.
You can.Go to the page you'd like to add to the homepage.

Zoom into the 'Black-eyed Joe' or portion of the screen you'd like to have as the homepage button.

click the '+' on the bottom of the browser, add it and name it.

Since I link the FFA, I can only get the 'Footballguys.com' with the Black-eyed Joe on the left of the page. If you wanted to link FBG's actual homepage you can use the huge pic from The Audible and it looks pretty cool on your iPhone's desktop.

HTH,

One

My son dropped my iPhone on our tile floor in the kitchen. The screen is cracked near the top of the earpiece and two long crakcs down the left side of the screen. Anyone know how to get this fixed on the cheap?

The same happened to mine and The Apple Store just swapped it out for a new one. Granted it was months ago, but I'd still give it a try. (I'd say last October)I just told them the truth, as I was getting out of my car it came off my belt clip and hit the ground right on the corner. The employee went to the back and started to ring up a swap for a brand new iPhone.

Question for you iphone gurus...can you listen to Sirius radio (or other streaming audio) online through the webbrowser capabilities on the phone? Is this feasible/practical?

I buy one when the monthly plan is nearer to $50 after taxes and everything... so $45 basic plan or so. No way I pay $800 a year for a phone. I already pay $600.

After buying my iphone and upgrading my data package, my phone bill actually went down 15 bucks. How? I don't know and don't care.

Out of the rumor mill comes the 16GB iPhone, now official. Ever since the 16GB iPod touch was announced in September, we all knew it was just a matter of time until Apple could bung the same NAND capacity into their chubbier iPhone. The surprise is a new 32GB iPod touch for the same $499. No other changes and certainly not 3G. Both are available immediately.Update: We just spoke with Apple, who told us that by available immediately, that means both US and international customers. They should start making their way to stores over the next couple of days, too, so call ahead to check stock if you're buying offline. Also, Cupertino had no comment on whether there were any other under-the-hood hardware changes in these new models.

what service plans can you use with the iPhone?

also, is it worth waiting for the new version or you think it will be something you can DL to the existing phones?

Here's a link to the iPhone Service Plans. Not sure what you're asking with your second question. If by "new version" you mean the new 16GB, then you don't have to wait as it's immediately available. Memory is hardware based so it's not something you can DL to upgrade.

I thought there was a new iPhone coming out? Was the 16gb the new one than? I remember reading how people who bought the 1st version would be pissed because a new one was coming out. If there is nothing new on the horizon, dumping Sprint today and getting one.

Want to jump on the iphone but still have a year left on my contract with Verizon - anyone know what the penalties are to switch or if there are any ways to switch without being penalized or having ATT cover?

Pretty sure it's around $175 to cancel your plan. The trick is once you get the bill for killing the plan, you only have to send whatever you want. Want to pay only 3 bucks this month? Do it. A friend of mine has been paying off his cancellation bill for about 7 months now. He says that it would've hurt more to pay it off in one shot, so he sends whatever he wants every month. Companies can't do anything about it.

This is a new one, but not THE new one (2.0)This is just a memory upgrade. Version 2.0 is the one a lot of people are waiting for....no way to predict accurately when it happens. Gizmodo, et al think announce in summer for Q3 release. Everyone anticipating 3G high speed for the 2.0 version

:goodposting: Just called verizon and its only $135 for me to cancel - I'm gone - here comes Iphone!

BTW - how much space is there actually for music and videos assuming some memory is taken by phone/email functions?

so better off waiting? will you be able to upgrade the 16gb or just have to dish out more $ for a new phone. i can hold off if needed. if just pay for upgrade, i will shell out for the 16gb.

Yes, AT&T have pretty much confirmed that there will be a 3G version of the iPhone sometime this year. If you can wait, I would hold off for the 3G - knowing Apple, they might have some other features/upgrades to announce at the same time.

I would check to se if 3G will even be available in your area first. Estimates have 3G penetration at only 20% in the U.S. So there's no point in waiting for something you can't use.

When it goes 3G (version 2.0), it will be a hardware upgrade. The only way to get it at that point would be to buy a new phone. I think Apple knows version 2.0 is going to sell like crazy....will get a lot of fence sitters, and early adopters (who will sell their 1.0).....I'm trying to hold out......ETA...good point Goonsquad. I am in DC and assume everyone will have 3G, but that is not the case......

Hi kidd,Before jumping, make sure you talk to someone with an iphone (not just an ATT phone) that works in your area to check coverage. ATT was terrible in the areas I traveled this Summer compared to Verizon. Enough that I couldn't keep the iphone.

AT&T plans major 3G expansion ahead of second-gen iPhone

By Katie Marsal

Published: 01:00 PM EST

AT&T said Wednesday it plans a major expansion of its wireless network during the 2008 calendar year, including the deployment of third-generation (3G) wireless broadband service to more than 80 additional cities in the United States through the course of the year.

The news comes just months before Apple is expected to take the wraps off its second generation iPhone, which, unlike the existing version, is expected to make broad use of 3G wireless technology. The current version of the touch-screen handset only functions on slower, 2.5G networks like AT&T's Edge.

The planned expansion is expected to deliver 3G services to nearly 350 leading U.S. markets by the end of 2008, AT&T said in a statement, including all of the top 100 U.S. cities. The 3G initiative will also include the roll out of more than 1,500 additional cell towers nationwide.

"With these aggressive initiatives, we're expanding the scope and the speed of our 3G capabilities, connecting people with their world and enabling more customers to do more with their wireless devices, wherever they may be," said AT&T Wireless chief executive Ralph de la Vega. "We're also planning for the future by establishing a clear path to a 4G network that will meet the needs of our customers for years to come."

quick question

all my itunes stuff is on my home computer that I would want to synch - all of my email/contactsd/calender is at my work computer - how do I use music/movies from home and email/contacts/calander from work?

I had a friend that wanted to buy an iPhone and they wouldn't let him pay cash...sales guy said this was standard procedure...is this true, and why?

Thanks one - so i need Itunes at work I guess - not a problem - thought that it could only synch with one Itunes.

up and running - like it a lot so far - one problem - tried to set up a ring tone - purchased one from store but when i try to synch it to my phone it says that all my music and movies will be removed if i synch it! Why is that? Is it a one time thing? doesnt make any sense - any help?

Well, I'm in the market for a new phone (gf is too), but we have decided to just upgrade to like a BlackJack 2 or something similar until this summer, THEN daddy's getting a 2.0!!!

Thanks for all the great info in the thread fellow  's

man this thing is one problem after another - now I cant synch it to my car blue tooth system because the pass key input on the iphone only has numbers while my code has numbers and letters in it - called tech support and they were baffled! How is this possible - how can they not have a letter option? Are they trying to alienate customers?

On a side note, it is now February 12th. When are these 3rd party applications coming out? Why would they wait til the mid to end of February when they have been hyping it for so long. I want flash and to be able to have my slingbox on my iphone. Give me that and I dont need anything else.
The promised release of February was for the Software Development Kit (SDK). So the actual apps may be a ways off yet.

New iPhone news today from the SDK Event: So far..

- Next iPhone update to include: Push Email, Push Calendar, Push Contacts, Global Address List, Cisco VPN, WPA2/ 802.1x, Security Policies, Device Config, Remote Wipe.

- Apple has licensed ActiveSync from Microsoft and will be incorporating native ActiveSync and Exchange support into the iPhone's existing apps (mail, cal, contacts)

Oh boy...I may have to hold out for that...

Still no flash for Safari?

I'm beginning to regret not getting an iPhone. Here in the UK cell phones are free, the iPhone isn't. As I have an iPod I just couldn't justify spending the money when there are so many other good phones available at no expense. I got the LG Viewty which is pretty sweet, but not in the same class as the iPhone for ease of use.

Lo and behold, my iPod is sad facing quite a bit and won't last me much longer.

When my LG is out of contract next year and my iPod has passed away I exepct I'll get an iPhone. Hopefully with flash, 3G, better camera etc.

The SDK is progress though. It would be criminal to keep the iPhone a closed platform.

The LIVE Gizmodo Updates.

- BBC's iPlayer site now has a "Beta BBC iPlayer for iPhone" badge when navigated to with an iPhone (screenshot). Coincidentally appeared on the day of the SDK roadmap. Content is not yet playable on the iPhone.

- Gizmodo spots Adobe, AOL, Orange, Gizmodo, J Crew, Disney employees at the event. PhoneMag spots Microsoft and Adobe employees.

- Steve Jobs opens with some stats on the iPhone: 71% of Mobile browser usage is on the iPhone. 28% marketshare of U.S. Smartphones. "So for the first time, you really do have the Internet in your pocket."

- Phil Schiller talks about the iPhone in enterprise and gives some examples: Genentech has 1000s of iPhones deployed. "The iPhone is a watershed event in mobile computing for corporations". Stanford has 100s of iPhones deployed.

- Next iPhone update to include: Push Email, Push Calendar, Push Contacts, Global Address List, Cisco VPN, WPA2/ 802.1x, Security Policies, Device Config, Remote Wipe.

- Apple has licensed ActiveSync from Microsoft and will be incorporating native ActiveSync and Exchange support into the iPhone's existing apps (mail, cal, contacts)

- SDK: Apple is releasing the same APIs and Tools that they use to develop iPhone applications. iPhone Emulator for OS X to help developers. Robust API with support for Animation, 3d, Camera, Networking, File Access, Audio Recording.

- Demo App written in 2 days shown: Touch FX. OpenGL distortion effects on photo with touch, pinch, expand. Shaking iPhone undos changes.

- Demo app that took 2 weeks: Touch Fighter, space shooter using OpenGL (3d anim) and OpenAL (audio). Touch to shoot, tilt to steer.

- EA demos an iPhone version of Spore.

- More app demos: Salesforce.com. AOL native AIM (instant messaging), Epocrates drug reference app. SEGA's SuperMonkeyBall.

- Native iPhone apps will be distributed through the iTunes App Store, with wireless downloads. Developers pick the price, and get 70% of revenue. No other fees. Paid out to developers

monthly.

- SDK is free to download today. To publish apps, however, there is a $99 developer fee.

- 100 Million dollars in the iFund for iPhone developers. This totally kicks the crap out of the Google Android 10M dollar fund for apps. (I believe it is 10m.)
