The Apple iPhone Thread (6 Viewers)

Thanks one, now I debate 8 or 16gb, I would rather spend 200 and then 100 on accessories.
Tough call. My wife and I have 16s. I use mine all the time and it's loaded with content (music/movies/tvshows/photos), she's only used up about 5g and uses it mainly for photos, web, apps, email and phone. She could have easily gone with the 8, but wanted 'a white one like yours.' I think unless you have a lot of content, go with the 8 + accessories.

Just took my iPhone into the Apple Store since I had a speck of some kind inside my screen. Some SUPER CUTE girl named Monica helped me out.Monica: :) Looks like you have something inside the screen, is your iPhone backed up? If so, let me exchange yours for a new one.Me:  Uh yeah, just last night.Monica: :) K, Great. Be right back.Me:  She gave me a brand new iPhone within 5 minutes. Either I'm too incredibly handsome to turn down or Apple's iPhone replacement policy is AWESOME.
Mine had a little speck in the screen too.It went away the next day.

Agree with One. Unless you have tons of music and movies and would need to go a long time between syncs, the extra memory won't do all that much for you. You can load the phone chock full of apps and it will still be well below a gig of memory used for that. Even hundreds of photos take up a little space. I've had my iPhones (1st gen and now 3G) for about a year and a half and never removed any photos and still have less than a gig of data used by everything other than music and movies.

On the other hand, a screen protector and case are generally good investments. Maybe even a docking station, depending on how they use the phones.

if i dont have an ipod, is the iphone worth using in its stead, or is that going to just really kill the battery?
The iphone battery runs very well using it as an ipod. What really drains the battery is using wifi or 3g. The battery on the iphone, when using it as an ipod, is great.

Okay so I have to wait another week for when we go down to So Cal because part of the deal is that the phone will be a surprise from Santa for my son. I thought I could buy them today and postpone activating them till next week but that was only for the first generation phone. I'll see if I win my fantasy game this weekend to determine if I'm going 8 or 16 gb for mine. I would love to be able to just load the crap out of it and not have to worry about syncing it non stop to switch music and movies.

Just did a jailbreak on my iPhone and I have to say it was well worth it. I love being able to directly access all the components of the phone and customize it however I want.

Can you explain exactly what "jailbreaking" is and what, specifically, the pros and cons of doing it are? TIA.

Here is a link to a site describing the basics. HTH.
So it makes it more customizable, but voids the warranty and could render it totally inoperable? That doesn't seem close to worth it.

I installed the OrbLive App on my iPhone and have the orb app running on my PC at home. I have been listening to music from my PC at home and looking at photos. This app is pretty sweet. I haven't had a chance to install the TV tuner on my PC yet, but it looks like it will work on my phone just like music or pics. At times the service is a little choppy, but not bad. I am really looking forward to seeing live television on it. You can also hook up webcams and select internet radio sites as well (those that you cannot get through AOL or others I assume). If the live television works, I am no longer interested in buying a slingbox unless my choice of channels is limited in OrbLive and Verizon Fios. I will post again when I am set up with the TV tuner. I highly recommend the trial version first. It does a random sample for each of the media folders and it's free.
I saw this on Osaurus's iPhone the other night, and it's pretty cool. TV stream looked solid, and so did the webcam of his dog sleeping :kicksrock:

IIRC from the people I have talked to that have jail broken theirs, it can be undone.

Yup ...easy enough to undo it....as far as the warranty goes....since there is no insurance from ATT...warranty really doesn' t mean much IMO

Jailbreak is software only. You install a version of the 2.2 firmware that allows you to do what you want...hence the "jailbreak". You're not opening the cover, you're not messing with the innards, and yes, it's reversible. To jailbreak it, you simply load on a "jailbroken" 2.2 firmware version. To revert it to original condition, you just load back onto it a normal 2.2 version.

Think about it like a Windows OS. Your computer might have come with an online verification method by Windows to verify your copy of the OS, and if you don't like your OS talking to Windows, you could reformat your computer, and install a version of the OS that didn't have that protection. If you wanted to then sell your computer, you'd just reformat it again and restore the original version, and no harm is done.

My sentiments (only more organized) exactly. I will say I have read some warnings about the App. OpenSSH that can be put on a jailbroken iPhone. It uses wifi to communicate with another PC. In this case, it is used to move files back and forth to the iPhone. Apparently in public wifi locations, it could be vulnerable to hacks, although it seems pretty unlikely. I found another program that I use on my PC at home, hook up the iPhone to the PC, and browse through the contents of the iPhone. I forget what the program is called but I will post when I get home. BTW: Anyone else try Orb Live yet? It is awesome!

ETA: I use a program called Disk Aid to transfer files back and forth from my iPhone.

Update:I am running OrbLive on my iPhone and my PC at home and it works great. I have access to all my Fios channels via TV tuner, all music, videos, DVR recordings, and webcams (just one of my dog), plus all the digital music Fios has (not that they are that great, but they are available). The only thing I cannot do is access on demand ( I can see it, but I cannot interact with it). I am not sure Slingbox can do that either. I could be wrong about this. If anyone has any questions about specifics for the iPhone or otherwise (works with all PCs and phones with web capability), PM me.
So let me get this 100% straight for simple people like myself:iPhone + OrbLive + PC with TV Tuner (connected to something like DirecTV) = TV on your iPhone?

bingo :goodposting: IIRC, he told me he got the TV tuner for like $85 bucks or so. It's on my list of things to do along with the jailbreak, but I don't have Wi-fi at many locations, and I have the Edge phone. Not sure if I would have too many chances to watch TV.

I think you can remote desktop too.

With the jailbreak you can get a Nintendo Emulator, and dl every single Nintendo game.

Even with Edge, you should be able to use a slider in Orb Live to move up and down the quality of the signal based on how you are connecting......Wifi then 3G, EDGE, then bad. Before anyone goes out gets a TV tuner to do this, check the Orb Live web site and makes sure the one you buy (or have) will work with it. I have also heard other tuners work just fine with it so who knows. Through the Orb app on your PC, you can access files at home (if the data is selected and added to Orb). HTH.ETA: I loaded all the NES games on my iPhone...it is pretty cool to play the retro games. Looks like there is a Sega Genesis emulator out there too.

So is this how you could get streaming sirius, since you can play it on your home computer. Has anyone done this?

So what's the deal with the "Visual Voicemail is currently unavailable." message I get now and then? It comes up randomly when I go to voicemail.
Only a guess but does it come up when your phone is "roaming"? VVM is only available on ATT, maybe you're out of range and bouncing other cell towers?

I've been getting a lot of spam texts from the Internet. Many companies have you block Internet texts to stop this. However, if you do this with AT&T it messes up your other Internet stuff if you have an iphone. So that sucks. :kicksrock:

If lets say I want to setup a WEP encrypted wifi hotspot before actually being in range of it can I do it? meaning I know the wep key to punch in already and just don't want to mess with entering it when I actually get in range.

possible?

how?

Are you one of those people who actually texts into TV shows and answers to those ads that ask you to text your "answer" or whatever?

No, but a lot of students have my number. I think it's from that because my wife gets nothing. Not getting spam from students but I think that's how my number eventually made it to the online spammers.

My wife got it for me as a present and she came home with the 2 year plan from apple. Not sure what it covers to be honest but she got it because our family has not had luck with apple (ipod) purchases. But she got it for me so I didnt have to carry around a phone and sidekick for Internet and email. Has worked very well so far, no complaints

Depends on how much music and video you need to carry at any given time.

I had an 8GB 1st Gen and now I've got the 16GB 3G and I've got to say that I'm glad I got the 16GB this time around - I can fit all my music on it and not have to worry about being choiceful with what apps I put on, etc.

I got the 16 gig for me and the 8 gig for my son, now I have to wait till xmas to start using it. I've already tried to sneak some time on it and my wife f'n finds me every time.

Just got an iPhone for Christmas, and have to say I am absolutely addicted to it so far. I'm looking for some new apps to get, but the main thing that piqued my interest is being able to get live TV on it... I browsed through OrbLive's page and apparently I'd need a TV Tuner on my PC first and foremost. I'm not looking to purchase one immediately, but wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with it/how it was? I'm a FIOS subscriber now and wanted to see if that may cause any sort of issue (what with the need for the Digital tuner box).

Apple rules.

Loving my Touch so far. I'm going to purchase OrbLive tonight and try to get the streaming tv to work. This device is definitely the coolest tech "toy" I've ever had.

I use Orb Live with Fios and have no problems whatsoever. PM me if you have any questions.

So regarding Safari, is there anyway to change the settings in the iPhone to let you view FULL web pages as opposed to the 'mobile' versions? Such as the ones for CBS/ESPN, etc.? I googled it a few times but wasn't able to find anything (probably since I'm not exactly sure what to search...)
