Listening to this weeks preview show, Cecil went off on LJ complaining about him running out of bounds late in the game and not running out the clock.

Does he not understand that the clock still runs up to 5 mintues left in the 4th quarter even when you run out of bounds? That's the only time LJ ran out of bounds towards the end of the game.

That's pretty basic stuff, especially for a podcast like this.

LJ was running out of bounds on the drive that started with around 6 minutes left on the clock in the 4th quarter. either way I'd like to see him lower his shoulder and punish a defense. :2cents:

He didn't do it with less than 5 minutes on the clock. The guy is getting like 40 touches a game. I think he's taking enough hits, that he doesn't need to take more trying to get a few more feet.

PM's down?

You guys can debate whether or not it's a good thing or a bad thing to have LJ punish defenses - that is a legit, thought very boring, topic.

But the OP is calling out Cecil for not knowing the rules of football. That's the reason for the thread. And apparently he's wrong and being a ####. Do not validate the baseless bashing by turning it into a legitimate debate about something else.

All I'm saying is that outside of 5 minutes in the 4th quarter, the clock keeps running. Apperantly, Cecil didn't know that or wasn't paying close enough attention.

Is this completely true?I believe they stop the clock and then run it again when they reset the ball. Not exactly a running clock

I believe that the play clock doesn't start until they restart the game clock, so you still run off the same amount of time. If I'm wrong, I'll humbly retreat to my corner.

I went back and watched the last 7:00 minutes. (very painful for me being a Broncos fan)

The clock does stop, and then the clock starts when they reset the ball.

IIRC the playclock goes to 40 on a continuation of the clock and 25 after a reset, like out of bounds.

Could be the difference here.

Sounds like nobody really knows the rules . . .
NFL Digest of Rules Timing

1. The stadium game clock is official. In case it stops or is operating incorrectly, the Line Judge takes over the official timing on the field.

2. Each period is 15 minutes. The intermission between the periods is two minutes. Halftime is 12 minutes, unless otherwise specified.

3. On charged team time outs, the Field Judge starts watch and blows whistle after 1 minute 50 seconds, unless television does not utilize the time for commercial. In this case the length of the time out is reduced to 40 seconds.

4. The Referee will allow necessary time to attend to an injured player, or repair a legal player's equipment.

5. Each team is allowed three time outs each half.

6. Time between plays will be 40 seconds from the end of a given play until the snap of the ball for the next play, or a 25-second interval after certain administrative stoppages and game delays.

7. Clock will start running when ball is snapped following all changes of team possession.

8. With the exception of the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half, the game clock will be restarted following a kickoff return, a player going out of bounds on a play from scrimmage, or after declined penalties when appropriate on the referee's signal.

9. Consecutive team time outs can be taken by opposing teams but the length of the second time out will be reduced to 40 seconds.

10. When, in the judgment of the Referee, the level of crowd noise prevents the offense from hearing its signals, he can institute a series of procedures which can result in a loss of team time outs or a five-yard penalty against the defensive team.

First calling a guy out for not knowing a certain rule is kinda childish, this would have been better handled via PM.Second, your both kinda right. Who's to say that the tackler LJ ran away from would get the tackle and not get ran over? That is what LJ normally does after all...LJ is smart enough to save his body from a hit when it's not needed. So is LT by the way...I agree with LJ running out of bounds in that situation, but I'm not gonna call a staffer out over minutia. It's as bad as the guys on this board that have nothing better to do than critique punctuation and spelling. When he says Aaron Brooks is the next Peyton Manning, then you can call him out on it, but this is frivolous

Or maybe it's as bad as calling out a stud running back for running out of bounds at the end of the game?Look, if he feels fine criticising a player for doing that, I think he's probably big enough to be able to take criticism when he's wrong about it.

Member #24865 obviously knows more than Cecil.

Should just fire him and get this guy.

:goodposting: Said it better than I could have. On that note, I officially declare this a dead issue.
