The Bears were nuts for not drafting a top tier TE! (1 Viewer)

From ChicagoBears.com Senior Writer Larry Mayer...

"None of the eight tight ends selected in the first three rounds of the draft have come even close to making the same type of impact as Devin Hester as a rookie. As a matter of fact, Hester’s four touchdowns this season are one more than all eight tight end prospects have scored combined. The group includes the 49ers’ Vernon Davis (7 catches for 69 yards and 1 TD), the Jaguars’ Marcedes Lewis (7-67-1), the Rams’ Joe Klopfenstein (15-191-1) and Dominique Byrd (0-0-0), the Cowboys’ Anthony Fasano (12-113-0), the Broncos’ Tony Scheffler (7-82-0), the Cardinals’ Leonard Pope (10-103-0) and the Patriots’ David Thomas (3-52-0)."

Interesting. And we were all calling Lovie and his crew crazy for not going after a stud TE.

Yep, crazy like a fox...

i was sooo happy about that Hester pick. now, the bears have everything it takes to make a super bowl run ... too bad the right QB is on the bench

note to bears QB - please just manage the game and don't try to do too much more !

:goodposting:

Angelo definitely went against the grain trading out of the 1st and taking Manning and Hester with the 2nd rounders, but they both have worked out real nicely

To be fair, Davis has missed most of the season with injury.

But yeah, I'm another Bears fan diggin' Hester. Post draft analysis is a crapshoot. It's like guessing who the Denver RB is gonna be— critics never know as much as they think they know, and everything can change when the game starts.

Isn't hindsight great...

Still, the Bears have needed a TE since...forever. Quick, name the last consistently and truly good (never mind great) TE they had.

Exactly.

And with QBs who typically aren't exactly a model of consistency either (except when they consistently suck), a stud TE would make even more sense. Oh well

Let's take this a little furtherDesmond Clark has 1 more TD than all of the above combined, and if you include Gilmore, the TE position has doubled the TD output of the above.

Anyone know how those TEs are working out in the running game? How well are they blocking?

Seems most of the running games for those teams have improved.

Im not saying I don't love Hester or Manning being on the Bears, but its a tough comparison to make.

Cap Boso down?
:lmao: For some reason, that's always the first name that comes to mind when I think of old Bears TEs. And the first name I think of when it comes to old Bears QBs is Bob Avellini.
A long forgotten North Endzone chant always helps remind me of an old Bears TEWHAT DO WE NEED?MOOREHEAD!!!!

Other than Gates/Gonzalez who has kept TE's for longer than a year or two? The Patriots bets TE might be Vrabel, but they always have a ton of guys ala Denver a few years back.

nobody knows for sure.
:goodposting: I never remembered Griese lighting it up at any point in his career. He always did what Grossman is doing now, throw interceptions. Honestly, if I was a Bear's fan I would rather have Orton in there before Griese. Just my opinion.

I agree that we can't be TOTALLY sure about whether or not Griese is the RIGHT QB to bring the Lombardi trophy to Chicago. However, I am pretty confident that Griese has the most TDs - best TD to INT ratio - and the highest career QB rating of any Bear EVAH!Griese isn't one of the best QBs to ever play the game or currently in the NFL. He's just the best QB (statistically) the Bears have ever had (at least in the modern era).

Griese made the Pro Bowl in 2000 after throwing 19 TDs and 4 INTs in 9 games with 64.3% completions.
