Ok...so I asked this question a while ago but it got lost in the crazy. I keep hearing (not just here) that Obama spent XXX amount of money in legal fees to keep this quiet. What exactly did that money go to? What did he have to actively pay for to keep this quiet? Because if he really did spend all that money, he's really no better than the whacko birthers.

The actual number is unknownwe can compare the campiagns' post-election legal spending and see that McCain spent 1.3 million and Obama over 2 million. We also know that at least 18 suits were filed.I'd WAG a couple hundred K

I think the crux of the suits was to prove his eligibility in a court of law by providing the requested document. He has every right and then some to file briefs to get the cases dismissed. What people are saying is that he spent money and time to avoid providing the document rather than providing the document. He has every right to do so, but people were questioning the justification for that decision from a financial standpoint. The only people that seem to upset are those bringing up Col deserter.

The only reason he "gave in" yesterday is because the Republican party was embarrassing itself with its poll results. It's you guys, not him, that should be ashamed of yourselves.

I have a theory as to why so many were inclined to believe Obama's birth certificate would reveal something negative.It's like a wife who knows her husband is cheating. There have been nights in the past where he was out late, but when the wife asked him if he was with another woman -- he denied it. This becomes a recurring pattern and a paranoia builds in the wife's head. Then, one night, hubby goes out with the boys after work. When wifey confronts him on it he says he was out with the guys, but she refuses to believe this truth because she knows the husband concealed that he was with another woman during those other nights out.Plenty of Birthers are racists, plenty aren't racist but honestly believed Obama was born elsewhere, and plenty took the position that so many other less desirable aspects about Obama have not been properly vetted by the media so why not this? Obama was telling the truth about his birth, but many couldn't accept it because of how the media covered up other negatives from Obama's past. Had the media been more truthful and thorough in vetting those other past aspects, I bet many would have felt more comfortable that the media got it right again when they refuted Birther claims.If you're tossing shame around for those high Birther figures, apportion a little to the media.

You (along with many other conservatives) seem to be trying to do everything you can to escape responsibility for mess. But you can't.It was conservatives who from the time of Obama's nomination suggested that he was somehow "unAmerican". It was conservatives who stressed Obama's middle name at every opportunity. It was conservatives who, rather than simply take issue with Obama's policies, called them "treasonous", "anti-American", "unpatriotic", "Marxist", and repeatedly said that "Obama doesn't respect traditional American values." It was conservatives who constantly told us about Obama "kowtowing to our enemies." A recent example from early this week: Obama criticized on Fox News for not having an Easter message, but for sending out a message earlier to celebrate Ramadan. It was never mentioned that none of the previous 4 presidents ever released an Easter message, or that George W. Bush also sent out a Ramadan message. The story was then repeated and talked about by Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. on their radio shows. The implication: Obama is more sympathetic to Islam than he is to Christianity. Now you guys have to reap what you sow. It should be no surprise to anyone that after years of "respectable" conservatives spreading the idea that Obama was unAmerican, you would end up with a majority of Republicans questioning the fact that he is American, and buying into stupid conspiracy theories like this one. Don't blame the media, don't blame liberals. Don't blame Obama. In fact, don't blame the opportunists like WorldNetDaily- they're only out to make a fast buck, after all. Blame yourselves. You're responsible.

I have no idea and don't really care. I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I wish I could find the clip, but the way they presented it was that the document the guy was holding in his hand was given to them many many many months ago. The reality is, it doesn't matter...the birthers have made their conclusions and will spare no expense to their integrity and/or credibility to bend the evidence to fit their conclusions. They aren't the first group to do it and won't be the last. It happens all the time. I posted an article about this earlier in the thread.The short answer is that both the Obama and the McCain campaigns have spent over a million dollars in legal fees since the election — ordinary fees to wind down the campaigns, etc. The World Net Daily assumed that 100% of the legal fees spent by the Obama campaign were to fight birther suits. (They presumably didn't make the same assumption about the legal fees spent by the McCain campaign.) The assumption was stupid and incorrect. Obama spent more than zero on birther suits (as he was forced to do), but probably not a whole lot more than zero.

I freely concede Obama was born in Hawaii - and I don't qualify his claim to citizenship at all. I have been consistent with that position all along. How does that make me a Birther again?

What I don't understand, if there is no basis for any of this, is why Obama simply won't release his birth certificate and allow access to his college records.

He does that and any controversy is over, period, and all conspiracy theorists have egg all over their face. Instead, he invests a million dollars a year every year in paying a law firm to ensure that no one has any access to any of these records. He's intentionally giving credibility to the argument.

I don't know if he is a natural born citizen or not. I haven't seen sufficient proof either way to convince me. I do know that the Constitution requires of a President that they be a natural born citizen of the United States.

Answer me this: Why did the hospital he was born in change in the past month or so?

He was originally supposedly born at Queen's Medical Center, but recently his official place of birth changed to Kapi'olani Medical Center. How does that happen?

I'd just like to see some verification. 9/11 truthers are the first thing that comes to mind. Claiming that no airplane parts were found around the Pentagon (when photos clearly show there were) or that steel doesn't melt when heated (contrary to all known laws of physics) is pretty far divorced from reality.

World Net Daily appears to going with the twins story Stat posted from yesterday. Apparently there are twins born a day later with numbers earlier than Obama's- this "proves" Obama's certificate is a forgery.

A question for those that claim that there's a lunatic fringe on both sides of the aisle ... what is the left equiavelant to World Net Daily? And don't just say the Democratic Underground of some other website you think is fringe. I'm curious to see an example of when a left-wing site has ever had material half as stupid as the stuff they're running with today.

I really do think that the left and right and Dems and GOP are two sides of the same coin ... but I can't reconcile that with the hilarious nonsense the far right is running with at the moment. Help me out.

There are some Truthers who are libertarian or militia types, but the majority have been liberal- focused on Bush and Cheney knowing about the bombing. I believe at one time a sizeable number of Democrats actually questioned this stuff, according to polls.

Of course, the classic liberal conspiracy theory is the death of John F. Kennedy. I don't think any modern conspiracy theory has ever been as detailed, with as much odd information as JFK. Even today a notable percentage of the public does not believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone.
