The Chargers are really bad at drafting WRs (1 Viewer)

Name three WRs drafted by the Chargers who ended up with at least 2,000 total receiving yards for the Chargers during their careers.

Give up? That's because there haven't been three.

John Jefferson and Anthony Miller are the only WRs the Chargers have drafted, in the whole history of the franchise, to hit the 2,000-yard mark for the team. (A few others, like Yancey Thigpen and Quinn Early, gained more than 2,000 career receiving yards, but not with the Chargers.)

Here is the list of all WRs the Chargers have ever drafted. A lot more misses than hits. Jimmy Oliver, Bryan Still, Ray Ethridge . . . ugh.

Hopefully Vincent Jackson and Craig Davis will hit the 2,000-yard mark someday.

What other teams have been historically bad at drafting for a certain position?

______________

(Note: Lance Alworth was drafted by the Raiders, but that may be a bit like saying Philip Rivers was drafted by the Giants. I believe Alworth was traded right after the draft, though I'm not sure of the exact timing. It may have been like the Rivers deal, where the other team knew that the Chargers had an interest.)

(Second note: It's not clear whether Gary Garrison was drafted by the Chargers. P-F-R has him being drafted only by the Eagles, as does this list of all Aztecs ever to have been drafted. But this page at Chargers.com lists Garrison as one of two sixth overall picks by the Chargers in 1965. It also lists two 14th overall picks, two 22nd overall picks . . . all the way up through the 12th round. So it's screwy. And this page from NFL.com lists Garrison as having been drafted by the Chargers in 1965. Overall, I suspect the info at P-F-R and the Aztec publication to be more reliable on this subject, but I'm not sure.)

As you know, lots of players in the '60s were drafted by two teams: one in the AFL and one in the NFL.http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1965_AFL.htm

But neither of those lists shows Garrison as being drafted by the Chargers. He was definitely drafted by the NFL and never played there pre-merger, so you'd think he was drafted by an AFL team. But maybe he was just an UDFA to the AFL.

Players with over 2,000 receiving yards in a Chargers uniforms. Unlike the OP, this includes non-receivers and non-Chargers draftees.

Yes, it's kind of weird. He was the 77th pick overall in the NFL. The AFL draft had 150 picks. So you figure he'd have been drafted, but I can't find any definitive info on it. I've found some conflicting draft lists, but no narrative description of how he came to sign with the Chargers. (Also, he was drafted in 1965, but didn't play a down until 1966. What did he do during 1965? Was he cut by the Eagles in training camp?)

According to PFR, Archie Manning is the only Drafted Saints QB to throw over 100 TDs during his career in NO...the next closest is 15 by Bobby Scott. I am not sure if they had an undrafted FA accomplish 100 TDs, but I doubt it. I was not sure what an acceptable bench mark would be for QBs, but the Jets (my team), known for QB futility, have had three (Namath, Todd and O'Brien with the possibility of Pennington hitting it next year if he starts (he is at 86).

Yep.Aaron Brooks (GNB, 120), Bobby Hebert (undrafted, 85 TD), Jim Everett (HOU, 60), Drew Brees (SDG, 54), Billy Kilmer (SF, 47), Dave Wilson (36, Supp-1st), Steve Walsh (Dal, 25), Ken Stabler (RAI, 17) are ahead of Scott. Only Hebert and Wilson weren't drafted by another team, and neither hit 100. Wilson should count though, ahead of Scott on the Saints successful draft list.Marc Bulger threw over 100 TDs and was drafted by the Saints; unfortunately, he didn't throw any of them in Old Gold and Black.

On some level, in some very obscure, and probably very sick way, this makes me feel SO MUCH BETTER AS AN EAGLES FAN!

:lmao:

I see that SD drafted Johnny Rodgers with the 25th pick in 1973. Why he didn't make it I don't know, but he was just awesome at Nebraska where he won the Heisman in 1972. I'll never forget that #1 10-0 Nebraska vs. #2 10-0 Oklahoma Thanksgiving game in 1971, won by Nebraska 35-31, as long as I live. Best college game I ever saw, followed by the Texas-USC title game.

For some reason, he played in Canada (for 4 years) after his college days. He did end up back with the Chargers but injuries kept him off the field.
