THE FBG Fashion Thread :style: (1 Viewer)

I used to always wear "aloha" shirts when on vacation at the beach. Now, hardly anyone wears them and my wife says the ones I still have are too big for me . Time to purge or store them for future use ?

If they're too big, that's a reason to purge unless you're still growing.

Style is cyclical though and aloha shirts will eventually come back in style. Some young influencers will rediscover them while thrifting and boomers and parrotheads will be vindicated.

Speaking of cyclical styles, Mrs. Eephus got me a pair of boot cut jeans ages ago. I stuck them in the back of the closet because (a) the style at the time was more tapered cuts and (b) I have enough denim.

I found the boot cuts the other week and tried them on. They're a little loose above the knee but baggy enough below to be in line with current wider denim styles so I've added them to my rotation.

I see them every day, everywhere. The trend has been sleeker, more fitted shirts, as opposed to the old school ginormous ones.

Plus, context matters. Aloha shirts in Hawaii are a different thing than Aloha shirts in the mainland.

They're seasonal as well. You see them more in the summer than in winter months, even in California.

I have no idea about ugly hawaiian shirts....you should just never wear them. But in general the :style: now is not sleeker/fitted shirts. The current :style: is boxy and oversized but not long (cropped just below the belt)

You really should give them a try - a lot more interesting than  golf shirts, and newer hybrid fabrics are worlds better than traditional polyester, or cotton. Vegas has enough of a Hawai’i connection you can wear them with confidence.

I know kids and 20 something’s wear oversized, boxy clothing, despite appropriate fit being a critical component of :style: Is anyone over 30 succumbing to this awful trend?

A person from HI gets a little leeway regarding their propriety. Live here long enough and you’ll probably get rid of all your long sleeved “dress” shirts.

I really like them for apres ski wear, when I pair them with jeans and down hoodie.

That's a really good point. And a good distinction between style and fashion.

I've little use for fashion and the trends that go in and out. Boxy sometimes then trimmer cuts another.

Much more interested in style and what looks good. Period. I know enough about what looks good and what I like - I don't need someone to declare "it's in".

Yeah, fashion is predicated on change, contrasting to the status quo. It’s ephemeral, almost by definition. And even when it arises organically, businesses are quick to capitalize, preying on people’s desire to remain contemporary, and youthful.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, I guess, but most of us mature, and realize the futility of chasing fickle trends. We can recognize timeless :style: without being told what it is.

My style:
Caps - I have around 20 of them
Backpacks - 5 pieces, soon this one will be added to the collection
Jeans - can't wear anything else

I have about 25+ ballcaps. If I'm not in the office or on a site visit, I have one on. While my hair's definitely got issues (gray), I have all of it.

Backpacks? Can't say that I go there... hmm.

Jeans - I've actually gone away from jeans unless I'm going out in the evening. For office days I'm all about the joggers (Vuori, BirdDogs, etc.). They are SO much more comfortable.

I work at a college and have noticed men wearing "floods" seems to be a thing. No socks and pants stop above the ankle even when standing. To me it looks ridiculous when wearing a suit cut like that.

I've seen tech bros in my neighborhood rocking this look.

Lame IMO.

I didn't suffer through two rounds of 75 Hard to wear boxy, oversized clothing...

Can you link to a picture?

And are you saying it's a suit? What kind of college are the kids wearing suits? Or for casual pants?

Mainly, how far above the ankle while standing are you talking about?

It's a law school so they often wear suits and 2-3 inches above the ankle.

What part of the country?

Can you link to a picture online of something similar?

I'm in Michigan and can't figure out how to link a picture but yeah, just like that guy.

I've seen similar looks in SF.

Tight and short cut suits with narrow lapels were the thing a decade ago, although not to the extreme as in the picture you linked. I think a suit like that has to be tailored well to avoid being uncomfortable.

I'm hoping the style pendulum swings back so my more voluminous 90s suits will be in fashion by the next wedding or funeral.

Baggy and boxy suits with bigger peak lapels are in :style: You’d stand out in everyday life but celebrities are definitely wearing baggier and oversized suits.
