I'm kind of liking this. Generally don't wear hats but this isn't a bad look on the boatLink: http://www.goorin.com/hats/bucket-hat/jacob?I wish there was a cool, non-baseball cap solution in headwear for the beach/golfing without looking like a geezer or a complete dork. An example.
I doubt I would pay $40 bucks for a hat. But the pic conveys the :style:
Yeah, I have a gilligan type hat I bought in Hawaii on our honeymoon... it's pretty dorky. Could probably pass on the beach but not on the links.Worm>gilligan hat.As a bonus, if you ever go to jamaica who may be offered drugs in exchange for the hat.
I'm ordering these right now. Finding a few other things and using an online code (SAVE123) made them $67.I think I just found the best denim for your money and they're surprisingly from The Gap. Amazing these are $90. I love the look as well - No labels, just good quality denim. They remind me a lot of APCs which run from $160-220. Best thing is that most FBGs have access to The Gap and the jeans won't break your bank. If you don't have a nice pair of jeans to wear out at night and don't want to spend $200+, then these are a must. They have several different fits but these are the ones I prefer:

I'd recommend going to the high end outlet stores (Saks, Neimans, etc). You can find some great deals there. I got an Armani suit for around $600. J Crew suits will suffice but see i'd opt for a sale on (Hugo Boss, Theory, Calvin Klein will likely be your price range) than the reg priced J.Crew stuff. It really depends on what fits you best. Also if this is your first suit, go midnight blue/2 button. Perfect for job interviews and formal occasions. You'll be able to wear this suit anywhere and will last you a long time. Personally I'd go with something a bit more modern and form fitting but a conservative suit like this would be better for a lawyer: suit.I am in the market for what is basically going to be my first nicer suit... In the fall I will be beginning law school and feel that it may be necessary to have a suit that I can use for interviews or whatever occasion may arise. I am not sure what suit would be best for my price range, $400-600 ish +/- up to $700 if it is the right one . I am a smaller guy at 5'7 and weigh 140-145 ish so I am looking for the best suit for my shape. All that I know is I do not want pleats and am probably going to go with a navy suit because from what I read it is the most versatile.
I was looking at these two suits from J-Crew,
Italian wool Ludlow, http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse...21351/21351.jsp
Worsted wool Ludlow, http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse...11707/11707.jsp
Is this a suitable suit and does anyone know what the quality of J-Crew suits are and how they fit and if they are worth the price. I would also appreciate any other suggestions for suits. Thanks in advance.
Been meaning to tell you, Major. Bought a pair of these a few weeks ago. Love them. I'm a diehard 501 guy. But I love these. Similar to the 501s in button fly and no frills. A little skinnier fit (but not skinny jeans). Like them a lot. Thanks for the headsup.I think I just found the best denim for your money and they're surprisingly from The Gap. Amazing these are $90. Also, I've had good experience with Indochino.com....basically a custom suit to your measurements for $400...pick the fabric, pick the embellishments, cuffs/no cuffs, vest/no vest, etc. I did a few posts on my experience and results earlier in teh thread but you'll have to hunt those posts down.
that's a good look. for a smaller guy i'd go with the European style/fitWorsted wool Ludlow, http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse...11707/11707.jsp
Since I am new to suits... Is the worsted wool a good/traditional material for a suit? What would be the difference between the worsted wool suit version and the italian wool? My main concern is whether the worsted wool would make a good material for a professional suit and convey a traditional suit image.that's a good look. for a smaller guy i'd go with the European style/fitWorsted wool Ludlow, http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/MensBrowse...11707/11707.jsp
Too beat up and light colored for my liking. Those don't "look" like expensive jeans to my eye.Just picked these Diesel's up......little pricey but they felt like they were hand tailored for me. When I was feeling the fabric the guy at the store said: "It's Japanese cotton" I almost asked him if that was anything like Italian nylon.
Might be pricey but I've gotten a lot of compliments on them. Drop in the bucket for a guy like me.
I don't think it's something to worry too much about. End result probably looks the same, may just be a different weight or feel to the touch which won't make much of a difference in a job interview. Also, don't get so caught up with trying to be overly traditional. Showing some sense of :style: can go a long ways in any job interview situation..half the battle is just making yourself memorable. Showing up in a well fitting, tailored suit with some nice details is a step in that direction (since most will probably show up in an oversized sack of a suit)Worsted Wool:Since I am new to suits... They're sick. It's summer. Light colored jeans are the way to go. I don't care if they look expensive. I've got more compliments on these than any other jeans I have and I've got a ####load.Too beat up and light colored for my liking. btw, this is a good sign. Another tip is to avoid getting your pant legs cuffed. Stick with the no cuffs as it's a much cleaner look. All that I know is I do not want pleats
At this age and starting to get into a little more spending $$$ you probably shouldn't be shopping for clothes at stores like this anyways (i.e. The Buckle, American Eagle, Abercrombie, Gap). The better mall places for casual gear are the end cap places like Boston Store's, Nieman Marcus, etc.Even better is online shopping. Know it can be out of some's comfort zone, but these places make it very easy to purchase and return nowadays....usually have better brands/:style: with good deals.I REALLY hate shopping for non work clothes. I just find it so embarrassing. I don't know if its the 16 and 17 year girls working in the stores looking at me like I'm the old guy (I'm 26) or the trendy pop music that's always playing, but i consider it an absolutely humiliating experience.

These arrived in the mail today, just got done trying 'em on. Solid pair of jeans that can be easily dressed up or down with the dark, simple wash. Not going to find a better pair of jeans for under $40.Just purchased these jeans online. Did a quick search and found a place where they were on sale for $32 ($39 total with shipping)
Levi's 514 slim straight, color Tumbled Black. I have a pair of these in grey and they fit and look great. Solid pair of jeans for a minimal price.

JTG has some solid advice above.I'd stay away from true khakis as well, and invest in some decent dress pants. For initial staples at somewhat reasonable prices, Express actually has some decent dressy but still :style: pants called "The Producer". They have a number of different colors to choose from (including khaki tan color), solid or pinstripe in a decent slimming shape....when getting dress pants stay away from baggy, no pleats and no cuffs on the ankles. They are about $60 a piece....give these a whirl to start compiling your beginning outfits and then upgrade to nicer brands little by little over time.Get yourself some nice dress shoes as well (black pair and a dark brown pair)...no bulky thick soles that look like concrete blocks on your feet. Nothing ruins a dressed up look faster than incorrect shoes. When in doubt go with slip ons....more comfortable, easier on and off on those busy mornings, and most importantly more :style:Congrats on the new job.Very entertaining thread. Some funny stuff and some good advice.Looking for a little advice. I just got a new job that I will be starting soon and will have to dress more professional than before. Basically I have to wear dress shirt/tie daily. From time to time a full suit will be needed. Mainly I am looking for advice and visuals on the shirt/tie combos. Are kakis ok with the shirt and ties? Or should I be looking more into dress pants?Got some good info on this thread for the suits. Diggin the 3 piece look :style:

Just what I was looking for with the shirts. Need the visuals to get the pattern shirt with tie look. Dressing with :style: may come easy for some, but I'm not one of them.Buy a few pairs of these (not from RL and not at that price necessarily) and a few of these and you will be set. I wouldn't wear chinos with a tie. But twill style "khaki" colored pants are easy to match up stuff with.
As for ties, I go: solid shirt - striped tie, striped shirt - solid tie (or some small innocuous pattern like this
Dressing "business casual" is about as easy as it gets.
Thanks, should be a good job...Was leaning to the dress pants over the khakis as well. Wife will not allow me to get pants with pleats anyways, she has beaten that into my head. Allready got the slip-on shoes. Got them more for the lazy factor than I did the look.JTG has some solid advice above.I'd stay away from true khakis as well, and invest in some decent dress pants. Seriously. I have the lower body of a 180 lb. person and the upper body of a 240 lb. person. Unfortunately I don't have great advice on this one....hopefully others can chime in.I have a relatively cheap sport coat that I like from H&M ($70) that has a nice slim cut and skinny lapels, but it's more appropriate for nights on the town and not really days in the office.I'm personally a believer of, if you're going to wear a sport coat than pair it with nice jeans when out on the town. I think sport coats paired with dress slacks in a business setting comes off as "old guy". If you need to wear a jacket than just step it up a notch and go with the full matching suit.Got some good advice last time, so I am back for more. Went out over the weekend and purchased shirts/ties/dress pants for the new job. Now I am looking to add some versitle sport coats. The majority of pants I got were black/dark grey. What should I be looking for?
By the way, nice work on this. I'm much more of a fan of sticking with the black family and less in the brown family. Blacks and greys just come off as more upscale and :style: savvy IMO.The majority of pants I got were black/dark grey.
I'd say without exaggeration that I wear a white, black or grey V Neck short sleeve shirt with dark jeans about 70% of the time. Very simple / classic. I've found that the Banana Republic Vnecks have a great cut to them, hold up well to washing (don't fade, shrink, etc), and can be had on sale for a great price regularly. Footwear-wise i've found a pair of New Balance that I have fallen in love with. Black cloth, low slung, very clean simple lines. Very similar in cut to a puma racing style shoe but very simple/classic. Works great for going out in even moderately upscale environments with the right jeans/shirt. Big fan. Will post the exact model after lunch. Ordered two pairs. Will probably order another one or two while they're available.Solid look, but best to always avoid light jeans. Dark jeans are better. If want to go lighter, get a solid pair of grey jeans. With summer approaching, I think that I'd like to go with a simple understated look.
gray v-neck tshirt to go with some light jeans. :flex:
Ladies like this look, right?
Cool. That kind of info on how they hold up is what threads like this are great for. We know what they look like in the store. Agree with the v-neck angle but have never bought them from Banana Republic.
