The Great 2020 All Time Movie Draft- The judging is heavily biased against me. It’s a hoax! Fake news. (1 Viewer)

6.13 -- Purple Rain, Rock Movie.

Purple Rain grossed over $72 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget.[4] The film won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score. In 2019, the film was added by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[5] Purple Rain has been regarded by publications and critics as one of the greatest musical films.[6]

Purple Rain was supported with its soundtrack album of the same name, which featured two US chart-topping singles, "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy", as well as the number-two hit "Purple Rain". The soundtrack is certified 13x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over 25 million copies worldwide.

6.14 The Sting

ill go greatest movie for now, until I understand the historical drama cat a little better.  is this a movie that would fit there?

almost took this at 5.03.  So happy it made it back  :headbang:

I wanted to pick this but didn't know for what or when.  I love this movie.

I don't see why it's not. It's set in the 1930s and was filmed in the 1970s. The time period is definitely part of the plot and they took time to create the details of the era.

6.12 - It Happened One Night - Rom Com

Prettymuch invented the genre. And swept the "big 5" oscars. Won't say much more for anti-spotlighting purposes.

@higgins
I won’t spotlight either, but I was reading an article a few years back about how every romantic comedy made since its release owes something to It Happened One Night.  And not even that narrow — even Spaceballs (already drafted, so I can spotlight that one) pulls from it. Great movie that still holds up.

to me that should be a movie about the 70s
That is a good point. While The Sting is really fun, was a huge hit and won Best Picture, it feels more like an Old Hollywood movie. It's more of an escape from the 70's than a representation of it.

Pick 6.8 - GallStein selects Cecil B. DeMille - Legendary Director (Category 40)

Between 1914 and 1958, DeMille made a total of 70 features, both silent and sound films. He is acknowledged as a founding father of the American cinema and the most commercially successful producer-director in film history. His films were distinguished by their epic scale and by his cinematic showmanship. His silent films included social dramas, comedies, Westerns, farces, morality plays, and historical pageants.

More write up later as this was @Charlie Steiner selection.
The old-time radio fan in me also acknowledges his contribution to that medium with his always high-production Lux Radio Theater, which adapted current popular movies and stage shows into radio dramas, often featuring the actual actors from each to reprise their roles.

@wikkidpissah says art is us arguing with the gods, and Cecil B. did so on an epic scale, pushing the art of filmmaking forward in the process.  Whether one thinks he was just in the right place at the right time or was the right man for that place and time, everyone will agree that Cecil went all-out and it's no wonder he rose to the status he achieved. I won't say that any successive movie directors owe their careers to him, but he definitely played a big part in building the medium where they found their calling.  He is at worst a founding father of the movie industry, at best he's woven into the entire DNA of Hollywood and all that it has influenced.  'Legendary' may not be big enough of a word to describe him.

It created every movie ever where 2 opposites come together, hate each other and then end up realizing they are in love or best friends or perfect partners- depending on movie context. It extends to nearly every genre.

Hmmmm . . . yes . . . perhaps 16 is way too many. To paraphrase a certain movie star in a certain ensemble 2000s movie, my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Forget what I said, and let's stick with the following 7 categories for me to judge--I'll be back on keto soon and can't deal with a muffin basket.

1) Comedy

2) Romantic Comedy

3) Space

4) Science Fiction On Earth

5) Fantasy

6) Modern Movie Stars (guy)

7) Modern Movie Stars (girl)

And if we're in a pinch, I can take more on if needed.
@Kumerica - first, thank you for judging!  For Movie Star there's actually four in total (Legendary and Modern for both sexes) - do you want to clarify which you want or do you want all 4?   (that would be 9 categories in total - which is a lot to ask of you)

Pleasantly surprised at all the love for It Happened One Night. It really is a fun movie.
This was the one I wrote down today for the category.  Like 80s said, I thought I might be able to snag it a little later.

This is turning into one of those damn music drafts where no idea you have is safe.  :scared:

We have some coming off the board in the form of Spirited Away and Seven Samurai, so let's see how some more foreign movies fare in this draft, especially in non-foreign categories.

6.16:  CITY OF GOD - gangster movie

7.01:  PAN'S LABRYRINTH - fantasy movie

Of course I think these are top picks for the categories.  They also give me some flexibility, as I think City of God is one of the best movies of the 00s, so if I get backed into a corner I could move it there or into the foreign language categories.

For those playing along, Pan's Labyrinth is on Netflix, City of God is on Hoopla (whatever the hell that is) and is just $2.99 to rent on Prime - well worth it

@AAABatteries and @hagmania  are back OTC

FYI, Apple TV has many, many good titles available right now for $5, several in 4k. On the app, scroll to the $4.99 section. Titles in the vein of what we're discussing here.

7.02:  The Maltese Falcon - 1940's

It's almost impossible to do write-ups without spotlighting but Maltese Falcon doesn't need me to pimp it.  Getting this in Round 7   :pickle:

Great pick.  One thing that made me hesitate a little on my Kane pick is writing down all the 40s movies and realizing how deep that category could be.

Strangely enough, they were both nominated for Best Picture (being from the same year)... and neither won!

I think if you moved Kane to the Best Movie Ever category, it might score ok
I figured I have that flex option too.   With all the great movies drafted into other categories, that "greatest movie ever" category is going to be interesting.

ETA:  however, with the feeling I get of people's opinion of Kane being dull, 40s is probably the better bet there, and I have Apocalypse now as having flex ability over to that GOAT category too.
