The Hunger Games (1 Viewer)

I've read the books and agree with what most have said here. The first one is great, the second one slightly less so and the third one just kind of okay.

But, I am really excited to see the movie. I think that the book gives the producers, set designers, special effect people, make-up artists, etc. a chance to be very visually stunning.

I find it amazing that king wrote running man 30 years ago and essentially predicted what entertainment would look like on tv in the 21st century.

Just purchased tickets for a midnight showing. For the 12:03 showing. The 12:01 and 12:02 were already sold out.

I think the last midnight showing I went to was for the Simpsons movie

The pictures of Jennifer Lawrence at the premiere... :jawdrop:

And Miley Cyrus either got implants or killed a dragon to claim it's magical push-up bra.

I bought tickets for the 12:01 showing for me and my 14yr old daughter...I read the books and really enjoyed the first one, 2nd one was pretty good, 3rd one I had to push myself to finish...She is the one that REALLY wants to see it, I wouldn't mind it, but wouldn't go to the midnight premier if it wasn't for her.

Seems pretty narrow to think that a violent film can't have a legitimate message.
I don't think that's the argument being made. I thought the movie was much weaker than the book and stripped many of the messages in it.
I'm not suggesting that a violent film can't have a message. I'm saying that Battle Royale the film is 90% a hyper violent, 10% story driven film. The messages are very, very far in the background, if they are present at all. In my opinion, they saw an opportunity to make an extreme movie about kids killing kids in a blood bath sort of way and jumped on it, mostly ignoring the themes of what was a really good book.I feel the movie is mostly violence for shock value. It's a violent book but the book isn't about violence in an of itself. I feel the movie lives and dies based on if the viewer loves gore.
Are we talking about the movie that you have only seen parts of?
Of course we are. Why am I going to sit through an entire movie that I feel kinda sucks? It wasn't delivering for me so I turned it off.Have you completed every movie that you have started watching?
movie was bad ####, and definitely had strong character development. too bad you missed out

Holy crap. There saying this thing may pull in $150 million in the opening weekend alone. There's a theater in LA that is showing the movie on every one of their 14 screens. I don't care how terrible the second and third books were, we'll be getting three movies out of this deal.

Friday, 8:15pm, row F, seats 6&7. I'll be in the plush leather recliner with a few brews. Can't wait.

Haven't read the books, but from the plot synopsis this just seems like a rehash of the japanese movie Battle Royale. Never thought something like that would become popular in American culture.

The second and third books were pretty good from a plot perspective. But the writing devolved without question, as the writer spent way too much time analyzing the depressed state of the teenage girl and focused on her feelings way too much. But it can be adapted into a great movie series I'm sure because the actual storyline is good.Wish we hadn't seen the whole story only from her perspective.

Thats insane. The first book wasnt that good.

There is a huge political undertone of the series. IMO it was a negative in the first book and totally dragged the next 2 into the gutter. Collins really had to play it up to make the series go longer and thus making the last book almost unreadable.

Yah this movie is going to kill at the box office. It is also tracking at 100% at Rotten Tomatoes with 14 reviews so far. Expect it to drop a bit but this looks like a 80-90% movie with critics which is damn good considering the movie has to skew towards a teen demographic. I think the difference between this movie and Twlight is that the Hunger Games can get guys to actually want to go see it.

My son got The Hunger Games as a gift and given the subject matter, I decided to read it first. It was enjoyable enough that I read the next two. I think The Hunger Games could make for a good movie, but I'm not sure about the other two. Love the Woody Harrelson casting, but hate the idea of Donald Sutherland as Snow.
Aldous Snow???

 It isn't Walt Whitman, but I enjoyed the story. Then again, I like Harry Potter, Ender's Game, and Robert Frost poetry. Simple and elegant doesn't bother me (i.e. not everything has to be written by Whitman or Eco, IMO).
Love the Woody Harrelson casting, but hate the idea of Donald Sutherland as Snow.
:goodposting: I remarked to my friend that Woody was a great choice but Snow should have definitely been done by John Hurt.
excellent book

My excitement keeps growing for this movie. I can't remember a movie I've looked forward to seeing as much as this one. I just really hope I'm not let down.

Perfect storm. Kinda fills the hole of Harry Potter. It is a good, very popular book. And the recent history at the movies has been a billet full of dreck. So there is some pent up demand for something good to hit.And (most importantly) this book and the impending movie has finally gotten my 12 year old to read by himself - and he liked it (woohoo!). I think a corner has been turned. So, at least in my family, going to see this first movie will be an event.

Started reading it today. About half way through and don't want to stop but need sleep. Quick read overall and need to finish before the movie. Interested in what the other books are about because at first thought I thought the series revolved around the games but not so. Just have to read them.

I read the books for the same reasons...my daughter wanted to read them.I was also not happy with Sutherland...for some reason my mind's eye saw Malcolm Macdowell

Anyone ever seen a film in Imax? How is the experience? I've already got the tickets, so just lie if it's bad. :)

My soon to be 11 year old and I went to see the last Harry Potter movie in Imax and it was pretty darn impressive. My wife, he and I have all read Hunger Games, so we will be going at some point and I would shell out extra for Imax. May have to alternate as I don't feel like shelling out $50 for movie tickets and another $50 for a baby sitter for the other kids.Just read the reviews on Imax/3D. Pretty sure this film will be solid, but I have avoided that format before when the reviews said the film was worse in 3D, but again, that is probably not even an issue now in 2012. I think that was more for films a couple years ago that were either started or shot in 2D and turned into 3D.

I'm in. I don't care to face the crowds this weekend, but will definitely check it out in the next couple of weeks.

Pretty sure Hunger Games is not 3D

1) Why adults read books written for tweens, I'll never know.

2) I liked it the first time I saw it, when it was called Battle Royale.

The Hunger Games is a young adult novel
The first one is a good read, if you're 13, and don't mind reading stories ripped off from other people.
Someone hurt you didn't they Smoovy? It's not your fault bro. It's not your fault. You don't need to tear down others to feel better about yourself...trust me...you'll find joy in building up others. You just need to give it a try...

Sorry, just saw the Imax and assumed. I am waiting at least a week to see it. I have only seen Imax 3D shows, so wasn't thinking it wouldn't be 3D.

Just tryin to help you out. Hey, have you read the Hardy Boys books? Awesome!

:goodposting:
I liked Battle Royale the first time when it was called Gladiator with Russell Crowe or The Running Man by Stephen King or heck, even in ancient Rome when they did have gladiators (who from a quick google could be teenagers).Seriously, is it really a new concept to have slaves or peasants or whoever fight to the death for the sporting entertainment of the upper class/government and those slaves/peasants/whoever rebelled? Wow, Battle Royale decided on kids. Oooh, the horror. Too bad Battle Royale had to rip off such a common idea around for centuries.
