You would have to have had a major screw loose to be a surgeon, or true man of science back then (not just a self-proclaimed health expert or whatever) – especially radical surgeons like these dudes. The technological aspect was put into perspective when Clive said they had just experienced, within the last five years at the time, more technological advancement in what they were doing than in the 500 subsequent years combined. Similar technological advancement can be seen elsewhere throughout history, like with the internet or whatever, but man, to be cutting people open like that – using a hand crank as your vacuum tube? Are you kidding me. I mean, the dude is literally smelting his own surgical instruments. That is riding the cusp of some seriously insane technology. Brilliant dudes, I guess, but you must have had major screws loose as a surgeon back then. You also have to wonder what real checks and balances must have been in place for these guys not to just do whatever the hell they wanted to. I guess that's what the stadium seating is for.
It's almost like science fiction. And I don't like the whole blood and guts thing thrown in my face. But it's obvious why it's there. They went just far enough for me not to change the channel and remove it from my DVR queue for how graphic the surgeries were. But once you get past the first episode intact you are pretty much a committed viewer at that point. Thank you.
