The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (7 Viewers)

I'm jealous of those of you who know what you're doing.
I had to dig out my vinyl album to find out who originally put out a song. It felt weird.
This site is not perfect, but I found it handy…

This site is a gold mine... https://secondhandsongs.com/

Just search for an artist...click on covers when you get to the artist's page. For example, here is the page for The Rolling Stones...127 cover songs by The Rolling Stones. They even give you Spotify and YouTube links.

Just curious, does this qualify as a cover? Stars on 45
When I was 8 or so, I would frequently spend my hard-earned allowance money on these crappy K-Tel compilations. The Stars on 45 medley was the second-to-last track on Dimensions, right before Elvira by the Oak Ridge Boys. May have been the first time I ever heard a Beatles song.

That track listing, though... I really hated the Manhattan Transfer song, and could never understand why Jimmy "The Boogie Woogie Man" Valiant used it as his intro music. I mean The Road Warriors had Iron Man and Hulk used Eye of the TIger. Who thought the crowd was gonna get pumped by Boy from New York City?

Kinda random, but there’s some gems on that compilation.

Coverees don't add up to 31 for a reason that will become obvious during the countdown.

Six artists appear as both coveree and coverer.

Is this going to be a repeat of the other MAD31s where any youtube links get kind of lost in the shuffle? I noticed that in one of them and have gone exclusively Spotify since, but there are so many good covers on youtube.
I’ll be honest, it’s very doubtful I click on individual YouTube links because that’s not really how I listen to music.

I’ll be almost exclusively listening to the playlists unless something catches my curiosity. It’s just too awkward to click on a link wait for the commercial, listen, and then click on another link…

That's a great site. Good way to discover covers that I hadn't heard before, but for our purposes, I'm pretty much just going off memory or what I have in my iTunes library.

About to submit. No theme to mine, just a list of my favorites. Most are either covers I've loved over the years or covers of original songs I've loved over the years that I recently discovered.

- Hope you like 80s music. 50% of my list is either a song that was covered in the 80s or is an 80s song covered more recently.
- The most times a cover artist repeats is 2, and this happens 3 times on my list.
- The most covered band is covered 4 times.
- 3 songs that I learned were covers as part of this exercise.

I have a list of songs I really want to include but they are youtube only so maybe half of you will hear it at best. I'll just have them be in my first 5 out.

Well, there may be a few boys from New York City here.
Ooh wah, ooh wah cool, cool kitty
Not a Rod Serling, Rush or Golden Earring cover
It looks like they are going to be launched from the Battlestar Galactica.

My bad - got my science fiction shows mixed up. Would be lying if I said I couldn’t come up with a Lorne Greene pun.

That was his first sci-fi series right? I guess he was a little greene in that area.

Cocaine’s a hell of a drug.

No repeats for me. One thing I learned about myself is that I really love gender-swapped covers - 18.5 (thanks to a duet) of my 31 choices fit that bill. I worked solely off the mega-playlist I've had going for year and, knowing there was no way I could pick 31 favorites, broke them down into five categories:

Favorite covers of favorite songs - 11, half of the originals were selected in another MAD countdown
Goth/Industrial covers - 5, all mainstays at goth nights for a decade
Fun takes - 5, self-explanatory
Covers of Songs Heard Repeatedly in My Dad's Old Pickup Truck - 5, hope some of you love classic country & western as much as I do
Wildcard - 5 covers that I just couldn't leave off

22 lists in! There's a handy-dandy indicator in post #3 of whether I have your list. Please check and let me know if I missed anyone, or if I marked you as complete and got that wrong, which is totally possible right now, too.

One clarification: as in other M-aD countdowns, I'll post the Last Five Outs just before starting the official countdown, so please send to me if you want to include any. Probably 90% of initial submissions have not included, and then when I follow up ~50% of people say, "Was I supposed to send those to you?" Yes! Please do. Of course, they are not required.

Another SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT about this will be posted below.

SPECIAL LIMITED-TIME OPPORTUNITY!!!!!11111

Guys and gals. I continue to worry about my schedule (only because I start work around 5:30 a.m. and end around 9-10 p.m. every day including weekends, and by the way **** that ****). Given that I could be delayed in getting the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111 going, which means I would delay beginning the countdown itself, and to give myself some wiggle room on all of it, next week might be dedicated to some discussion of Last Five Outs*.

As usual I’ll post the submissions I’ve received, but I also wanted to give everyone an opportunity to participate in this SPECIAL, LIMITED-TIME OFFER!

Did you struggle with narrowing your list or your Last Five Out because this exercise is ****ing impossible? Did you do some “theme” on your list that made Last Five Outs well-nigh impossible? Are you just a person who likes to send me more PMs?

Well I have something for you!

As I’ve tried to put together my own list, I realized I had many that wouldn’t make the cut but that could be grouped together into a cute little Last Five Out of their own. So as we await the actual countdown, I’ll also post these to keep the discussion going. And you are invited to submit your own!

My supplemental Last Five Outs** include five versions of the same song, five songs by a particular artist, five songs covering a particular artist, five covers not found on Spotify, and more! Anything that you can put into a cohesive group of five will be accepted and posted, with the following caveat:

For avoidance of spoilers, your list cannot contain anything listed on anyone else’s top 31 or their official Last Five Out. How will you know? Why simple, you’ll run it by me and I’ll give you the (y) or (n).

CALL NOW TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS LIMITED-TIME OFFER!! OPERATORS ARE STANDING BY! DIAL 1-888-COVERME! THAT’S 1-800-COVERME! CALL NOW!! AGAIN THAT’S 1-866-COVERME!

AND IF YOU CALL IN THE NEXT 27 SECONDS, WE’LL INCLUDE THIS LIMITED-EDITION SPECIAL GIFT AT NO COST TO YOU.
***

QUANTITIES ARE LIMITED SO CALL NOW!!

*This never looks right, but I can’t come up with a better alternative. Lasts Five Out doesn’t work. Last Five Out’s is an abuse of an innocent apostrophe. @rockaction?

**Still bothering me.

***Not valid in Guam or other places I can't locate on a map.

Of course OH is one of the people who hasn’t submitted yet.

I was encouraged by his seemingly working on it over the weekend, but that was misplaced. I do think he had 10-12 on a list, though.

Oh, and he had two that I also have and that I think no one else in the countdown will list. We'll see which of us "owns" those songs.

LOL. I'd ask Pip. Barring that, I'd go with Last Five Outs. It's a plural. It looks wrong and it might—at first glance—look better with an apostrophe, but deep down we know that the plural is right.

"How right?"

"Far right!"

Just a little Goldwater humor there for ya.

Last Five Outs. No apostrophe as it’s not possessive.

The only plausible alternative would be Last Fives Out, which sounds even weirder.

More confused than ever. I have one song that I will submit for last out. If it actually appears on someone's list I will be amazed and excited.

30 songs are locked in and I'm looking at my list of also-rans feeling like there's gotta be one more song that hasn't crossed my mind yet.

EDIT: Found it!

Sorry. In case anyone is shuked, the post last night is an invitation to send more than one Last Five Out. The standard Last Five Out is open to everyone and can include anything, whether or not it's on someone else's list. The Special Offer Last Five Outs can't be spoilers and can just be anything you want, not really a Last Five Out but based on whatever theme you desire. I gave examples.
