The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (2 Viewers)

I see I have a lot of PMs, which I'll go through now.

I'm going to try to find a way tomorrow to put together the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111. I have some concerns that I won't have time or inspiration. If I can't, then for the first time ever we won't have a contest.

@krista4 The sane thing to do would be to delay all deadlines by 48-hours….

Would it make a difference between getting your list and not? Since I'm not doing all the tabulation I've done before, and we won't start anything until Monday, I can take a late list or three.

I'm in. 30 artists covering 31 different artists. I tried to use 62, but I was too torn between two covers by the same band so I used both. I also ended up with 3 that I've used on other drafts. Oh well, I am happy with the list. Looking forward to the reveals.

Hope you're a Boxcar Willie fan.

I was able to get mine done before leaving for Vegas 7 hours ago.
I could probably have it done by Monday night. If that's too late, I'll just enjoy

I don't understand these two sentences together.
Try reading the first sentence with a wasn’t instead of a was. Makes sense now, but im not sure if thats what zegras meant.
If you still have deadline issues, zegras said he will have it by monday night.

Otherwise I guess, just go when you are ready

I know I said I'd turn to PMs a while ago, but then I was ****ing working again. Getting to them now and will update the third post. OH actually finished his last night but forgot to send it to me. I should have his after he gets off in an hour.

Oh...guess I should finish mine, come to think of it.

I've mentioned this before, but the reason I selected YouTube music as my primary music driver is that, for an extra $2 month, I get ad-free youTube. It's hard to switch once you get a taste of that...

Yup. I said I dropped google, but I should have said I added Amazon. I have too good a deal to quit ad-free youtube. Recently I went to youtube after clearing cache had logged me out. Ooof, the best money I spend is for Youtube Premium.

I'm not sure if quality moves the needle anymore. I figure at some point of the aging process the audio quality ceases to matter, and I'm probably closer to that point than I'd care to admit.

Well, what our old ears mostly lose is the high end. I am nearly deaf above 12khz. I'll peak highs with EQ sometimes, but mostly I just accept it. We gradually lose some DBs too, but that's not an issue for us old rock and rollers. Just turn up the volume. Hi-res audio does two things that make a big difference to me and my old ears. It cleans up the muddy bass. I have one on my list with some brilliant stand-up bass. On Amazon HD that thing is crystal clear, crisp and clean, the way God intended. On spotty it's hard to tell if it's a guitar, a synth, or a sampled hippo. The other I mentioned above. Typical streams have little separation of the instruments and don't create that sound stage that tickles me. The musicians, they're all jumbled together.
OH is definitely submitting something with a sampled hippo in it.

It's official. I'm not going to have time/energy to do the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111. I'm sorry, because I know some of us really enjoyed that, and of course the charitable donations were a big part of these countdowns. Hopefully next time I'll time this better with work.

Speaking of which, after I get some work done today I'll post the official Lasts Fives Outs. Then I'll follow over the rest of the weekend with the "fun" ones. Will put together a full playlist of those that are on Spotify.

They're here!!! The Official Last 1-5 or So Out(s)!

As a reminder, I don't heavily re-format the Lasts Fives Outs but will start making these posts consistent and pretty with the top 31. Also, as is tradition, songs that appeared on more than one list will be on the playlist multiple times.

More housekeeping: as usual, links to the posts containing the selections and to the playlists are contained in the second post of the thread.

Here are some additional songs that were selected by people who took up the offer to have additional five-song lists. Added to Spotify playlist where applicable:

Pip’s Invitation:

Next-to-Last 5 Out:
Blackbird -- Crosby, Stills and Nash (The Beatles cover) (may have ranked higher if a 1969-70 version were on Spotify; instead, we have 1982)
Dazed and Confused -- Led Zeppelin (Jake Holmes "cover") (would have made top 31, but I self-ruled it ineligible because its cover status is ambiguous)
Woodstock -- Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (Joni Mitchell cover) (would have made top 31, but not on Spotify)
Enjoy the Silence -- Failure (Depeche Mode cover) (would have made top 31, but not on Spotify)
Rappaport's Testament: I Never Gave Up -- Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (Chumbawamba cover) (would have made top 31, but not on Spotify)

Don Quixote:

scorchy:

Next Last 5 Out (Spotify)

Gimme Shelter - Sisters of Mercy (Original by The Rolling Stones) - The Industrial/Goth selection
It Wasn't God Who Made Honkey Tonk Angels - Cat Power (Original by Kitty Wells) - My Father's Old Pickup selection
Be My Baby - Glasvegas (Original by The Ronettes) - The Original Favorite selection
Going Underground by Buffalo Tom (Original by The Jam) - The Wild Card selection
Shake It Off - Screaming Females (Original by Taylor Swift) - The "Fun" selection

Val Rannous:

Bonus Weirdo 5:

Thunderstruck - Steve 'N' Seagulls (AC/DC)
The Trooper - Steve 'N' Seagulls (Iron Maiden)
Nothing Else Matters - Steve 'N' Seagulls (Metallica)
Born to be Wild - Steve 'N' Seagulls (Steppenwolf)
Paradise City - Steve 'N' Seagulls (Guns N' Roses)

Chaos34:

Tired Of Waiting For You - Green Day (The Kinks)
Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (Velvet Underground)

These two made my list from memory. Upon careful listening, I decided to drop both. Being faithful to the original artist is fine by me, sometimes respectful. But compared to what I started desiring, they just didn’t put their stamps on these. So I moved along.

Same Old Mistakes - Rihanna (Tame Impala)
Everybody Knows - Concrete Blonde (Leonard Cohen)
Hard To Handle - The Black Crowes (Otis Redding)

Likewise, these three were jotted down near instantly. I love each for different reasons. So much so I’ve drafted them at least twice over the years. I decided to avoid that here. Too many fun covers out there to explore.

Time After Time - Miles Davis (Cindi Lauper)

This is the one I mentioned might not be a recognizable cover to some. In the video, you see Miles struggling to find the tune. He may even be nodding under the influence of heroin. He crouches over his horn pointing it at the floor. He explores the theme. He finds something sublime. The studio version is a bla 3 ½ minute nodder. The live version stops me in my tracks every time it randomly pops up on a 7 hr long jazz playlist.

Scoresman:

Reckoner - Gnarls Barkley (Radiohead) - Always loved this version of a top 5 Radiohead song of mine.

Needle and the Damage Done - Jewel (Neil Young) - This is in the encyclopedia under “goosebumps”. The absolute definition of covering a song and making it yours. A top 5 cover for me that is only here because it’s YouTube only.

I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston (Dolly Parton) - Definitely in my top 31 but as I was discovering so many new covers I liked, I got rid of the chalk first.

All Along the Watchtower - Dave Matthews Band (Bob Dylan) - Yeah I was one of those guys who went through a DMB phase in college and this is one of the remaining songs I still love. They always used to end their shows with this. Just an awesome song if you like jams.

No Quarter - Tool (Led Zeppelin) - More chalk that got removed. Surprisingly this is not on Spotify.

As if you don't have enough with the six hours of music just posted, later today I'll post the supplemental last five out lists from Pip, Don Quixote, scorchy, Val Rannous, Chaos and me. :)

I still have 100 songs from the 2023 year-end song draft to get through before this kicks off.

Who would have thought the off-season on a fantasy football board would involve so much homework.

Chaos34:

Malaguena - Roy Clark (Sabicas)

Oof, I'm running late, but intended to say something about this. Sabicas isn't the OG on Malaguena. He was the first to interpret it for flamenco guitar. Roy covered that many times. This is the one I said was for Mrs. R.

Awhile ago she said Roy would be in her super band as a lead guitarist. Another person dismissively said he thought Roy was a banjo guy or something. I almost engaged in what may have been a mistake considering my surprise said person was unaware of Roy's freaking epic virtuosity on guitar, and said person's often combative nature 'round here. Mrs. R beat me to it without being surprised or insulting. Which was good.

Y'all may or may not know how unbelievably good Chet Atkins and Glen Campbell were on guitar, but they were. Right there with any players from any genre. Long story short. I snuck backstage during rehearsal for a Reagan fund-raiser in the early 80s. I did this alot in back of this particular stage. Chet, Glen, and Roy were the $1000 a plate dinner entertainment. They were practicing not dueling banjos, but tripling banjos, and of course, they were breaking out their guitars. I had recently seen ZZ Top and Van Halen. I never saw anything like what these three were doing. Mind blown. As the three-way competition intensified Roy did the hold my beer thing and grabbed a 12 string. He played that thing with such precision and ferocity I still can't believe what I witnessed, but I describe it as the most powerful right hand strumming in the history of the universe. Sweat was dripping off Roy's nose and he was lost in some freak show of guitar chops. Chet said, "Okay okay I give." Glen just laid his guitar down and gave Roy a bow. Anyway... always thought that would be fun to share. It's fun to remember for sure.

Not sure what the spotify link is like, but Roy is best appreciated wearing out his guitars on youtube and Malaguena is a good place to start.

Lastly, a few supplemental five-song lists from me. I'd put together more, but seeing how much music we already have here, I've pared it down to three lists. The second and third will be added to the playlist.

Songs that would have made my top 31 if on Spotify

(Yes, you'll have to click links, but I swear they're worth it.)

To Love Somebody – Damien Rice and Ray Lamontagne (Bee Gees)
Return of the Grievous Angel – Lucinda Williams and David Crosby (Gram Parsons)
The Whole of the Moon – Frightened Rabbit (The Waterboys)
He Ain’t Heavy, He's My Brother – The Justice Collective, comprising a whole lot of famous people (Kelly Gordon) RIP Shane MacGowan
One Irish Rover – The Frames feat. Liam Ó Maonlaí (Van Morrison)

Songs that I might have considered and would have been technically eligible but felt like cheating

Crying - Roy Orbison and kd lang (Roy Orbison)
Maybe I’m Amazed - Wings (Paul McCartney)
Tower of Song – Leonard Cohen and U2 (Leonard Cohen)
I Got You (I Feel Good) – James Brown (based on Yvonne Fair and the James Brown Band's "I Found You")
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Elton John and George Michael (Elton John)

Five covers of one song that was otherwise not selected by anyone

Bring It On Home to Me - originally recorded by Sam Cooke after heavily reworking "I Want to Go Home" by Charles Brown and Amos Milburn

Otis Redding and Carla Thomas version
B.B. King and Paul Carrack version
Van Morrison version
Britt Daniel version
Lou Rawls version

Just to clarify, you did not remove songs from the last 5 if they were on someone’s actual list right?

Correct. Only the supplemental ones I posted after the "official" lasts fives outs were scrubbed to make sure they hadn't been otherwise selected, and in fact Pip's were not subject to those rules for other reasons.

I'm going to take a hard pause for a while here since there's a lot to get through. I'll start with the 1-pointers next week whenever the masses feel ready for them.

If you mapped Chet, Glen, and Roy to their closest rock analogs … let’s see … they’re pretty much Hendrix, Steve Vai, and EVH, respectively.

Roy Clark especially … if Eddie were indisposed before a Van Halen tour and they needed an emergency replacement, Roy could have done it. Rehearse hard for a month to get the VH set list down, plug him in and let Roy cook. Clark had the requisite hand speed to match Eddie’s leads — probably could have adapted some of the tapping parts and credibly played them with a pick.

There are 7 instances of others’ Last 5 Out selections that appear in my top 31.

I submitted my next-to-last-5-out list at the same time as my top 31 and my last 5 out, so it wasn’t specifically constructed with Krista’s bonus instructions in mind. But there is sort of a theme in that most are not on Spotify at all or in the version I want, or there is debate as to whether it counts as a cover at all, so all were left off in favor of “cleaner” options.

Yes, and I should have said...yours was not subject to the "bonus last five out" rules because it came in as an actual Last Five Out before I announced the Special Offer. So someone could have selected something on your list in their top 31.

I'm sure that's all perfectly clear and needs no further refining. :lmao: Sorry.

I know you will get this question and im not sure if it is mentioned elsewhere, but for the benefit of others….
What is the hard deadline for submissions?

After looking through all those last 5 out lists
My Secret Identity has no matches of any kind, song, artist…anything.

My list
2 of the songs are in my list, but by a different artist covering them
2 artists are in my list, but with a different song.

1 is a complete match. Mt Man is the lucky person to get a Bingo with me with my #15 choice.

Ooooh, I wanna play that game, too. I have a lot more "chalk," though. I do know that OH and I have three covers in common, and for all three we are the only two people who selected them. One of those three is a song that others selected but from a different cover artist.
