The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (2 Viewers)

but it's there

Still can't forget my new friend and I drinking at the bar during a huge college football game and some guy gets up and puts a bunch of Dan on the jukebox. We just started laughing our asses off around the third song. You had to be at this local bar that sort of was like a living room, all threadbare and decked out all seventies with a sound system to match. Wood paneling. Reminded me of that guy's Mom's basement, I'll bet.

Steely Dan DEFINITELY goes with wood paneling.

That aside, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter absolutely kills it on guitar in this Midnight Special episode.

As I get older, it becomes a minefield to talk about yacht rock or yacht rock-adjacent stuff. It has a good shot of getting stuck in the old cranium here, and I don't do well with it. I even wrote a longish piece about Franz Ferdinand over at another site to try and jog them back into my head, but no such luck.

And again, thank you, Dan. This is about the thirtieth time since Pip and I discussed it.

I love them, but they are definitely patron saints of “The Faces Made for Radio” wing of the R&R HOF.

ETA: also Skunk’s best TV performance until appearing with the Doobie Brothers on What’s Happening several years later

Steely Dan has female backup singers, which was rare for them at this time. The camera spent a long time on them because most of the dudes in the early '70s edition of the band were, let's face it, pretty ugly.

No David Palmer in this one to add to the looks. He was long gone by then.

#22 I Fought The Law - The Clash (The Crickets)
Original: Spotify; Youtube

I'd suggest that this song needs little introduction, but that's probably two-thirds my list. That said, this has to fall into the category of a well-known song. The original was recorded by The Crickets after Buddy Holly's death, so it's perhaps less surprising that this was written instead by lead guitarist Sonny Curtis. From Wikipedia (and other places), this song wasn't released as a lead single, instead appearing as a B-side to "A Sweet Love".

The Clash were (by far) neither the first nor the last to cover the song, of course. They lend their own take to it for sure, including changing and/or shuffling the lyrics around a bit. There's definitely still the same idea behind it, the same hook and general catchiness. Just with that unique Clash energy and musicianship driving things along.

At #21, we return to a song that's been featured by at least one person. But I won't let that tarnish my appreciation for it.

Page 2?!?! Are we all just waiting to hear how simey's dental appointment goes?
It went OK. I didn't get any gas. booooo! The office speakers serenaded me with The Blend on XM while I was in the dental chair. I heard Andy Gibb, Uruk's boy Billy Joel, Bette Midler, some others, and the highlight was George McCrae doing Rock Your Baby.

I didn't like the sanding tool he used on my tooth, but at least it wasn't a drill. I got a little nervous when the dentist said to the assistant, "Let's try that again." I was thinking to myself he has already screwed up and we just started. When he finished the tooth, he handed me a mirror to look at the finished product. It was a little bigger than the original bond, and at first glance it looked almost as big as my big tooth beside it, but it isn't quite that big. It's better than being snaggletoothed. When I put the mirror on my lap for him to do a bit more sanding, it fell from my lap onto the floor. It startled the dentist, and I just prayed it didn't break, because I don't want 7 years of bad luck. Thankfully it didn't break.

I'm glad I brought my night guard with me. It's a hard one, and I wear it every night. I have worn one for years. It keeps me from clinching in my sleep, and I'm used to it. He had to adjust it several times to accommodate the new bigger shaped bond. I think he finally got it right. I'll find out tonight when I put it in.

Ah, second time someone picked the same track as me on the same day. Nice.

Today we have songs of a certain caliber, as we hit the #22s. Appropriately for that number, we had three Deja Votes. This was a round where the competition for my second category was fiercer. Really, there was just a slightly higher concentration of performances (if not covering artists) that I was unfamiliar with until this playlist. Combined with, well, a lot of those performances that I liked.

Recognized by title alone: 19
Sounded familiar: 3
Didn’t Know: 10

Selected Favorites:
Hallelujah - Pentatonix
Needles and Pins - Ramones
Lean on Me - Club Noveau. I didn’t recognize the band name, but remembered this version quickly.
Alone Again Or - The Damned

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
Broken Hearted People - Robert Forster
Yeh Yeh - Diana Krall & Georgie Fame
Lemonworld - Bartees Strange
Crazy - Shawn Colvin

Is it "catalogue" or "catalog"? Is there a distinction I should be making?
No idea, but it’s a good thing the basketball game I was waiting for started so I could switch off “I can see your voice”.

Hearing multiple people pronounce “sing-er” as “sing-grr” is apparently triggering for me.

The Midnight Special episode I put on tonight is hosted by Richard Pryor and features Electric Light Orchestra, Joe Hicks, Dough Kershaw, Albert King, Melissa Manchester and "Joe Walsh, formerly of the James Gang."

51 years later it's weird that they needed a modifier for Joe Walsh but not Joe Hicks.

ELO's violinist is wearing a cape, because why wouldn't you if you're playing violin in a rock band in the '70s? ELO's first song is a cover; will be interesting to see if it shows up here. Richard Pryor: "White folks can really play electricity."

Pryor is making jokes about Black people "accidentally" getting shot by cops. Can you imagine someone doing that today?

Walsh's drummer here was Joe Vitale, who has played with him on and off to the current day. His first song was The James Gang's "Tend My Garden," which I have mentioned before as being the song that part of More Than a Feeling was lifted from.

The 10-pointers are my new favorites, I think. It's only the second playlist where I didn't employ my two-minute rule (even if I hate it must listen to two minutes) on any new-to-me songs and instead listened to each of them all the way through. Lots of fun stuff here:

"Jokerman" by Built to Spill - I hesitate to say it, but I think I enjoyed it more than the original.
"Broken Hearted People" by Robert Forster - I'm doing "shuffle" now so that I can try to guess who selected it, since my pea brain doesn't remember after posting. I quickly guessed this as a wonderful Simey Special.
"Hallelujah" by Pentatonix - I'd heard eleventy squillion covers of this song but not this one. One of the male leads' intonations indicated he didn't seem to "get" the song IMO, but there's no questioning how lovely the voices were, making it a pleasure to hear.
"Make You Feel My Love" by Adele - I don't think I know this original, but whatever Adele was doing was lovely.
"Lemonworld" by Bartees Strange - I had to look Mr. Strange up, and I saw this: "Bartees Leon Cox Jr., known by his stage name Bartees Strange, is an English-born American musician." Thank god I didn't have to vet him in the prior countdowns. Anyway, I don't know the original here, either, but this was a very cool cover of whatever it is.
"Come Talk to Me" by Bon Iver - It took me a while to recognize what the song was, and then it was a big WOW moment. Much prefer this to the original.
"Melissa" by Dave Matthews Band - The Allman Brothers Band is a group I know I should love, and I've never taken the time to explore them. Maybe if I were more of a devotee, I'd not appreciate the cover as much, but as it was I thought this was very good. Great vocal on the verses in particular.
"Needles and Pins" by Ramones - I've probably heard this since the Ramones are an OH favorite, but this was a really pleasurable pop cover.
"Lean on Me" by Club Nouveau - Not new to me but I'd totally forgotten about it. I pegged this as a Doug B selection and was way off base. He's really good at pulling out these forgotten gems, but apparently Scoresman is, too!
"Dream On" by Dio - Another one I dare to say that I enjoyed more than the original. Awesome vocal.
"There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" by Dum Dum Girls - Guessed this as scorchy - bingo! Why are the Smiths titles so long? Is it because their fans went to college and speak in complete sentences? In any case, this was fantastic. My second big WOW.
"Dust My Broom" by Elmore James - Not really new to me, but awesome and also gives me a chance to say, "Go Johnny go. Elmore James got nothing on you." (Which wasn't true.)
"Alone Again Or" by The Damned - Not new to me but in the "can't believe I forgot this one" category.
"Airbag" by some people - Again don't know the original but this was fun. By now I'm thinking maybe I've never listened to music before.

Oh, forgot the two not on the playlist. I like the Muse cover - rockin'.

Ah, second time someone picked the same track as me on the same day. Nice.

Mrs. Bramble? We caught your boy Titus copying off of the other kids again...

Thoughts on the 10s.

Songs That I Knew the Cover and the Original
titusbramble/Mt. Man: I Fought the Law - The Clash (The Crickets)
zamboni:/Binky Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill (Neil Diamond)
rockaction: Needles and Pins – The Ramones (Jackie DeShannon)
Scoresman: Lean on Me - Club Nouveau (Bill Withers) - When I was 14 and got my first job as a DJ at the roller rink, the first two 12” singles I bought were this and The Show by Doug E. Fresh.
Mrs. Rannous: Carmelita - Linda Ronstadt (Murray McLauchlan) - Definitely the prettiest take on my favorite WZ tune.
Doug B: Alone Again Or - The Damned (Love) - At the time I started getting into punk, I had heard of The Damned but not heard them. Got very excited one night on 120 Minutes when Kevin Seal announced that a new video by them was coming up. It was Alone Again Or - definitely not what I expected The Damned to sound like. A couple of days later I found a greatest hits double cassette at the super-shady non-mall record store and laughed when I read in the liner notes that their drummer was named Rat Scabies.

Songs That I Only Know the Original but Really Enjoyed the Cover
Eephus: California Dreamin' - Bobby Womack (The Mamas & The Papas)
Raging weasel: Dream On - Dio (Aerosmith) - Everything’s better with a little Dio.
landrys hat: No Diggity - T Bird and the Breaks (Blackstreet) - Love this take. Orders of magnitude better than one I considered.
Chaos34: Airbag - Easy Star (Radiohead)
Higgins: Crazy - Shawn Colvin (Gnarls Barkley)
Oliver Humanzee: Street Fighting Man - Archers of Loaf (Rolling Stones) Big fan on the Archers. A local guy I know hosts small shows at his house. He had Eric Bachmann (the frontman) over one night a few years back - put on a great performance for a living room full of old bearded dudes.

Song I Like That I Only Know the Cover but not the Original
Dr. Octopus: Jokerman – Built To Spill (Robert Zimmerman)
Ilov80s: Make You Feel My Love - Adele (Bob Dylan)

Songs I Like That I Didn't Know Either Version
simey: Broken Hearted People - Robert Forster (Steve Young)

Already “Covered” in an Earlier Post
DrIanMalcolm: Georgia on My Mind - Ray Charles (Hoagy Carmichael)

Page 2?!?! Are we all just waiting to hear how simey's dental appointment goes?
I just got home from a root canal. Want to talk about that? My tongue is quite numb.
Good news is that everything seems a-ok this morning. No pain in the tooth and an only slightly sore jaw (from holding it open for an hour). All in all it's way less of a deal than I thought it would be.

Now I'm starting down the barrel of a crown procedure next month. Confetti.

"Come Talk to Me" by Bon Iver - It took me a while to recognize what the song was, and then it was a big WOW moment. Much prefer this to the original.
Interesting. I love both versions with a nod to Gabriel. Glad you liked it!

I think what I like more about PG's version is Sinead O'Connor's backing vocals.

Will be here more sporadically than usual the next week. Flying out to the other coast today to visit the kid at college then spending three nights in San Francisco after. I've not had beer, pizza, beef/pork, dessert, or pretty much anything bad for me in 2024. Looking forward to going off the wagon for a bit (more so with pizza/dessert and not booze).

Question for @Eephus - The last night we're in town, Ministry is playing the Warfield Theater about a 10-minute walk from our hotel. Mrs. Scorchy has never seen MInistry so thinks we should go. OTOH, as each year goes by, she gets less-and-less tolerant of being elbowed in the boob by overly excited man-children. Even if it's crowded, is there a place to hang back there that's away from the chaos?

Forgot to mention, the dentist broke off the tip of his instrument in the root of my tooth. Yes, I know exactly how that sounds. :oldunsure:

Upside is, now I truly am a metal head. :headbang:
Yikes - that is totally metal. A sarcastic "thanks, Sir Laurence Olivier" would have been appropriate on the way out.

Sorry, forgot put together the list last night and have been slammed with work today. Will get it done as soon as I can! Luckily you have Teeth Chat to keep you busy.
In the meantime we can listen to Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

I've fallen hopelessly behind on this thread. Just finished the 8 pointer playlist and I'm down a couple of writeups.

My son blew into town on Saturday a few hours after ditkaburgers left for Japan. I've fallen hopelessly behind on this thread. Just finished the 8 pointer playlist and I'm down a couple of writeups.

My son blew into town on Saturday a few hours after ditkaburgers left for Japan. He's only here for a week and his energy disrupts our usual boring existence and cuts down on my screen time considerably. He's leaving on Sunday shortly after ditkaburgers gets back so the whole band will be back together briefly.
