The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (2 Viewers)

Covers are the lifeblood of why music matters. They're why - whether you know it or not - you have your favorite artist(s).

As is usual for me, I blame Rolling Stone for this. Their take on music history has become so ingrained into music-listeners DNA, they don't even know it's there. A song isn't "real" unless it's written and performed by some tortured soul in his/her mom's basement.

Screw that. Give me a good performance and an interesting twist on something already known. Or, just perform a really good song. "Standards" are standards for a reason.
I'm sure we'll all encounter familiar versions of songs that we didn't even realize were covers - that's also part of the fun of this countdown.
I think I have a couple that, while both the cover artist and the covered artist are really famous, offer up something different.

I left off some of the most famous covers. Not to be a snob, but because I know they'll get plenty of play from others.
I also tried to not be too chalky, although I'm sure I'll have a few repeats. Didn't spent a ton of time trying to go deep down into the rabbit hole.

I did some of that too. I did not go in with that intent, but I had a few of the famous covers appear pretty high in my other MAD lists, and whenever I was split on something, found myself mostly favoring to keep it fresh (put in more that I had just outside the cut in some other lists). Also just found myself not really listening to those songs as much. Decided to go a bit less with a “lifetime favorite” list like I did in the US and UK lists, and more what is resonating with me in the moment.

Just the Way You Are is now a standard!

I feel like I'm letting you all down.

No, seriously. When I put the first three of these together, I feel like I was constantly in here posting and interacting, coming up with contests, etc. And this time, I just can't get it together and haven't even begun collating any of the data from the lists. I don't know when I last had a day off. And even my weekend workdays are 12-14 hours. It just sucks.

What really sucks is that, looking at the lists I have already, this should be really fun. And maybe it still will be, when it gets started and if I get my **** together. Sorry to be an absentee mother so far.

One thing I can tell is that we won't be able to have a "regular" contest like top 10 favorites or even most covered artists. I already have two lists that are all covers of only one artist each. Those lists are great, and I'm not complaining, but there's no way we'll have any consensus "favorites" in this one. Maybe I'll just do the SUPER-AWESOME-MEGA-CONTEST!!!111 this time and forgo the other. For that, though, I need inspiration and have none at the moment. It doesn't help that I'm doing Dry January.

Oh, and I got called for federal jury duty Jan. 29. I don't even know how TF I'm supposed to miss work for that and don't have a good reason to get out of it (I've just learned getting out of federal is a lot harder). Thinking of buying full MAGA gear or something to wear to ensure I don't get chosen.

We might want to assume that this countdown won't start in earnest until the first week of February, though if I can get going earlier I will. I'll at least post everyone's Last Five Out prior to that so discussion can start, though.

There’s no way any decent attorney is going to put a super intelligent attorney on a jury. You’re golden.

The MAGA gear would only enhance your chances of being selected.

I just got back a little into this after a week in Costa Rica and then a solid week of heavy covid (tested today) - and still feeling pretty crappy. MY biggest challenge is to rank what I have - easy enough to come up with tons of fun covers and some themes - but as usual, I'm sticking with the songs I would really want to hear AND trying to throw some stuff in there that is less likely to be duped.

Same here.

I picked songs I like that were either originally written by or covered by artists I enjoy—most of them fit both categories.

In Virginia, I’m automatically exempt from jury duty as a licensed attorney. Probably figure not worth anyone’s time to put us in the pool to begin with.

Sorry about the vid. Get well soon.

+1 Get well soon, Bink.

Yeah there’s no way I would imagine an attorney ends up on the jury

Id probably go with an “Epstein was innocent” T-Shirt.

As for when we start, no one is putting more pressure on you than yourself. We're all chill. I think.
Start when you are ready, not before.

I'll throw my hat into the ring here. Unless a cover takes a wildly different arrangement or is from a different genre, I often find myself saying, "So what? You didn't write it!" That is, unless the performance is somehow noteworthy. I have a few similarly-arranged, similar-genre covers that made it into the Top 31 based on performance.

But that doesn't mean I don't like covers. Like 'em just fine. Just think that unless there's something that stands out about them in a good way then there's really no point in listening. As far as reasons for playing them, I dig when the artist just loves the song or seeks to take an underappreciated, unloved song and bring it to the fore. I understand and dig that, too.

But a perfunctory cover to appease a label or an audience? No thanks.
I agree and I like to think most of my songs fit your requirements but maybe not. I think I need a playlist of the oriignals to my covers just to be more acquainted with the work my artists did in shaping the songs.

Yeah, I think I spoke to soon and got too big for my britches. Some of the songs that I'm putting in are just covers, plain and simple.

Right, but sometimes the spirit or essence or whatever of an artist transforms a song even if it technically makes few changes.

Congrats to Ravens fans (@Uruk-Hai , not sure who else?) and 49ers fans (?)! I think @Eephus is a Packers rather than 49ers fan; not sure about anyone else. We're all Lions and Bills fans tomorrow, right?

@rockaction will be happy I just edited this to make a comma a semi-colon.
Thanks. I worked hard to make that victory happen

I'm in on the Lions. I'm ambivalent about the other game. I think, as a Ravens fan, I'd rather they play K.C.

Well; the day after saying I was in; I came up with 13 off the top of my head. Since then; I haven't thought about this; well, until now. I s'pose I have plenty of time; but, reading through the thread; first thing I did was delete 5 from my list for not being different enough for you nerds. 23 to go. My goal is to submit before OH; which likely means I have until 11:55 pst 1-26.

In NC, the DA is exempt since he/she is an elected official. Active military and law enforcement are also exempt.

I got summoned for jury duty (which is one of the reasons I couldn't do Summerpalooza that week it started) back in August, and there was an officer that was summoned too. He could have gotten out of it immediately, but he said he wanted to see what it was about if he got called. His name was called, and he was dismissed immediately during voir dire. He still had to hang out all day long with everyone until a jury was decided on. He sat with me and another lady during the day, and we all had a good time chatting. He had just gotten back from vacation with his family, and he had a bit of sunburn on his face. He was so nice, and he was going to go out of his way to look into an incident the woman who was chatting with us had witnessed at Atlantic Beach. He had been in law enforcement for over 20 years, and he was a Sgt. that headed the Family Victims Unit. He was a big advocate for domestic violence. His dad was a retired officer. Anyway, fast forward to December 30th, and I was out of town and got a Blue Alert on my phone about an officer assaulted, and it gave the make of a vehicle and license plate. Later on the news said an off duty officer had been killed. The name was not released at this time, and it was just reported that an off duty officer had been sitting at a table using his computer outside a gas station/convenience store called Sheetz, and three people ran out of the store with cases of stolen beer. The off duty officer approached the car and the driver shot him 5 times. He died at the hospital. On New Years day the news released his name and showed a picture, and I instantly recognized him as that nice guy I had talked to for a good part of the day during jury duty. His name was Sgt. Philip Dale Nix. He went by Dale. My heart sank when I saw his face on the TV. He was everything great about law enforcement. He was buried on Jan. 11th, and his funeral was televised on TV starting with the procession with a horse-drawn carriage. The three suspects were caught. They murdered him over $83 worth of beer. The Tunnels to Towers Foundation paid off Sgt. Nix's home mortgage, and the state treasurer's office is asking for his death to be called a line-of-duty death so his family can receive the $100,000 benefit. I hope it gets OK'd. I think it will.

I just picked covers I dig that I didn't already choose in the previous 31 k4 MADs. There are a handful of covers I chose that I think will be duplicated by others, and I won't be surprised if other covers of some of my covers appear.

I said I would root for the Lions if they outlasted the Eagles because one of my friends is a long-suffering Lions fan, and so I am.
As one of the long-suffering Jets fans in this thread, I’m also rooting for the Lions because I know how the fans feel and am happy for them. Also more than a bit jealous. ☹️
The Panthers are cellar dwellers these days. The team's misery starts with an owner that is so awful that he tosses his drink on opposing fans. He is gross. :yucky:

Our owner is stuck on Band-Aids rather than on building a strong franchise.

I read that first part as the Band-Aid song. I am not an Aaron Rodgers fan, but I imagine the Jets would have been pretty good this year had Rodgers not gotten hurt. He is older, though, and I reckon would fall into the Band-Aid category.

It was indeed a commercial jingle reference that most of us elders know. 🙂🤕 Rodgers would have surely have made them better, but I think much of Jets nation is probably too far ahead of woulda/coulda/shoulda. He would have struggled behind that patchwork OL.

I think I may have picked two of my records in previous drafts, but I don't think it was any of the MAD events.

Would anyone like to put Uruk's list in something other than alphabetical order for me?
