The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (5 Viewers)

I know you will get this question and im not sure if it is mentioned elsewhere, but for the benefit of others….
What is the hard deadline for submissions?

Submissions of top 31 lists? Yesterday.
Ah, ok. Was it only zegras who said he was gonna do a list and hadnt yet?

tuffnutt and Yankee23Fan popped in to bow out of this, so yes, Zegras is the only one missing. I still wasn't entirely sure what his prior posts meant, and I suppose if he gets one in Monday and we haven't posted the 1-pointers yet (which I suspect will be the case), I'd still take his list.

To me the simplest explanation is what Eephus (I think it was him) said — Zegras’ post was missing a “not.”

If you mapped Chet, Glen, and Roy to their closest rock analogs … let’s see … they’re pretty much Hendrix, Steve Vai, and EVH, respectively.
Glen Campbell and Alice Cooper were good friends, and Alice said one time EVH came to Arizona to golf with him, and Eddie asked Alice if he could get Glen to give him a guitar lesson. Glen lived near Alice, and he came over to Alice's house and gave Eddie a lesson. 🎸

Awhile ago she said Roy would be in her super band as a lead guitarist. Another person dismissively said he thought Roy was a banjo guy or something. I almost engaged in what may have been a mistake considering my surprise said person was unaware of Roy's freaking epic virtuosity on guitar, and said person's often combative nature 'round here. Mrs. R beat me to it without being surprised or insulting. Which was good.
It wasn't easy.

Here's Glen Campbell covering Classical Gas.

How? - Ozzy Osbourne (John Lennon)
This one is not on Spotify. It's not anywhere, except on YouTube. It was recorded for Amnesty International. It is a 70th birthday tribute to John Lennon. The video is worth watching. (You'll see why at the end.) It is one very heartfelt tribute.

As I mentioned to Mrs. R when she submitted her list, I had no idea this existed and loved it. Thanks for this one!

After Midnight -- Eric Clapton (JJ Cale cover)

Three of my Last 5 Out are Clapton-related. That may have been a subconscious decision, knowing how Krista feels about him. But 1970 was his peak. The Layla album is justifiably his most renowned work, but his self-titled solo debut is almost as good and is cut from the same cloth, with most of the future Dominoes participating. His energetic, rollicking cover of JJ Cale’s After Midnight is a highlight not just of the album but of Clapton’s entire career. It was the first and best pairing of songwriter and performer that lasted for decades, culminating in a duo album. Cale had songwriting abilities that Clapton lacked, and Clapton had performance abilities that Cale lacked, and their similar tastes in blues and country made for great synergy.

The re-recording for a beer commercial is an abomination and will not be spoken of again.

Crossroads -- Cream (Robert Johnson cover)

Clapton is also one of the foremost interpreters of Robert Johnson, electrifying his works throughout his career. Again, the best effort was the first, an absolutely blistering take on Crossroads that kicks off the live disc of Cream’s Wheels of Fire. Teenage me was blown away.

The Nile Song -- Voivod (Pink Floyd cover)
Ibiza Bar -- Love Battery (Pink Floyd cover)

These two highly atypical Floyd songs, both from the More soundtrack, have always fascinated me. I believe I was the only one to rank them in my top 25 in Anarchy’s Floyd countdown. They are the hardest rock Floyd ever did and answer a question no one asked: What would it sound like if Floyd aped Blue Cheer? The result is pretty wild.

Not surprisingly, these songs resonated with some of the louder 90s alternative bands. Voivod’s Nile Song ups the aggression and Love Battery’s Ibiza Bar ups the psychedelia. Both are excellent updates reflecting their era and the subgenre the originals drew from.

Well All Right -- Blind Faith (Buddy Holly cover)

Winwood, Clapton, Baker and Grech do a bang-up job on a joyful arrangement, romping through a song that was pretty subdued in its original form. I saw Winwood and Clapton perform this live (along with the rest of side 1 of the Blind Faith album) at MSG.

I can't blame anyone for their picks (there are even, shudder, a couple of Joe Cocker selections that will appear), but I was really mad to see him be prominently featured in the pictures for the Lasts Fives Outs playlist since yours came first.

krista4:

The Thrill is Gone – B.B. King (Roy Hawkins)
Love Hurts – Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris (Everly Brothers)
Every 1's a Winner - Ty Segall (Hot Chocolate)
Rooftop Garden – Bill Callahan, Will Oldham and George Xylouris (Lou Reed)
Mule Skinner Blues - Dolly Parton (Jimmie Rodgers)

My Last Five Out aren't necessarily my last five out. A couple of others would have made it, but, just to be nice, I wanted to minimize the number of selections on my Last Five Out that would later appear on people's actual Top 31s. Only one of the five above will be on someone else's list.

Anyway, I probably don't have to give much in the way of background on why I selected these. "The Thrill Is Gone." Duh. "Mule Skinner Blues" and "Love Hurts" are long-time favorites that I've undoubtedly selected in various drafts.

Ty Segall's "Every 1's a Winner" epitomizes to me what a great cover can be in that it takes the best parts of the original song but makes them into something very different.

"Rooftop Garden" was a tough selection. Bill Callahan and Will Oldham gathered various other musicians to put out a compilation of covers a few years back, and there were many worthy selections there. Speaking of artists I don't like much, believe it or not, my runner-up from this record was a Steely Dan song! I think their rendition of "Deacon Blues" is outstanding. I ended up choosing "Rooftop Garden," though, because the work of George Xylouris makes it something truly special.

A missed opportunity by Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy to cover an original by Golden Smog.

:lmao: I did think of making my usual distinction, but thought it was overplayed.

Oof, I'm running late, but intended to say something about this. Sabicas isn't the OG on Malaguena. He was the first to interpret it for flamenco guitar. Roy covered that many times. This is the one I said was for Mrs. R.

 Except you were talking to me at the time - Mrs. R uses the next computer to the right...

But yes, Roy is a guitar god.

Nope. I wanted to tell my Roy story ever since your better half chose him for her super band. But Roy didn't make the cut for my list. The one that made me think of you did. I'm a Rannous stalker?

Oh cool!! Now I'm really intrigued - can't wait!

Happy to get this stared on a rainy Sunday. Good way to kill time before rooting against the Ravens at 3:30.

Only one of my 31 was on any of the other lists - was happy to see it get some love. From my two last five lists, definitely wanted to highlight a couple:

When You Were Mine - Har Mar Superstar (Original by Prince)

Pretty much the minute I saw this posted on AV Undercover, I texted a link to @Ramsay Hunt Experience. Not only is he the biggest Prince fan I know (as evidenced by the last MAD31), we also share an affinity for some Har Mar Superstar tracks. The kicker though is that RHE has a shockingly amazing voice and bears more than a faint resemblance to Har Mar, not just physically but also the way he owns the spotlight. Years back, a fellow FBG rented a karaoke machine for his 40th b-day party. At some point, RHE took a turn and announced he was doing Let's Get It On. You could see the black folks at the party give this big roll-eyes like what's this husky white guy gonna do? And he absolutely killed it, i mean killed it, complete with the mic drop at the end. The only performance of the night that earned a standing ovation.

Unfortunately, it's not captured on video, yet a rendition of Because I Got High by fatguy (with Mrs. Scorchy and a few others on background vocals) is still floating around.

Don't Dream It's Over - Miley Cyrus/Ariana Grande (Original by Crowded House)

I caught Miley and Ariana's first performance of this while watching a replay of the One Love Manchester concert (a benefit for victims of the May 2017 terrorist bombing at an Ariana Grande show at Manchester Arena). Ariana understandably struggled with her emotions a lot during the benefit (a cover of Don't Look Back in Anger brings chills) so I was happy to find another take that was more light-hearted. I'm not sure I could name an Ariana Grande song (or more than two or three from Miley Cyrus) but I love the interplay of their voices on this one.

(S)He Thinks I Still Care - Kasey Chambers (Original by George Jones) - My Father's Old Pickup selection
My parents (especially my mom) played George Jones a lot when I was growing up, and this was a big song for him. Chambers does a great job with it. I like how she kept it countrified to the bone.
Glad you liked it. I went through a huge Kasey Chambers kick in the early aughts - just love her voice. I actually misattributed the song though, as it's her with the Dead Ringer Band, which was formed by her dad and I think only contains members of her immediate family. In the early days of streaming, I could never find anything from her Dead RInger Band-era so I had my sister-in-law who lived in Australia mail me physical copies. Still have them burned to my hard-drive but they're non-existent on Spotify. :crying:

I noticed when listening to the song on youtube it said Dead Ringer Band. The song Saddle Boy came on afterwards, and I liked it too.

I was able to get mine done before leaving for Vegas 7 hours ago.
I could probably have it done by Monday night. If that's too late, I'll just enjoy

I don't understand these two sentences together.
Try reading the first sentence with a wasn’t instead of a was. Makes sense now, but im not sure if thats what zegras meant.
If you still have deadline issues, zegras said he will have it by monday night.

Otherwise I guess, just go when you are ready
Oops. Meant wasn't... u2 was insane last night.

Don Quixote:

I won’t say much on last five out. Some of them appeared pretty high in my MAD lists, and I expect they will show up pretty high on some lists here too. As I mentioned in earlier post, I tried keeping my list here a little bit fresh to me.

On my additional five out, I went for theme of some more Nina Simone Songs. These did not appear in my list of 31 songs for Nina Simone, and are all live tracks. All were songs in deep consideration for my 31 Nina Simone songs, but missed the final cut.

“Li’l Liza Jane” and “Trouble in Mind” are both from her 1960 concert at the Newport Jazz Festival — I had “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” in my MAD artist 31 list from the same concert. “Li’l Liza Jane” may be familiar to those who have seen the Netflix documentary.

“Pirate Jenny” is Nina Simone’s take on the song from The Threepenny Opera. Her famous version of it is from her legendary performance at Carnegie Hall in 1964, where she also debuted Mississippi ******. Nina Simone has a dramatic flair in her singing of it.

“Obeah Woman” is another cover of Exuma by Nina Simone. I had her cover of his “22nd Century” in my MAD list. She takes her time to get it started, but one of Nina Simone’s finest live performances.

“Sunday in Savannah” is from the ‘Nuff Said album, and is another song from her performance at the Westbury Music Fair three days after MLK’s assassination, where she debuted “Why? (The King of Love is Dead)” that was in my MAD 31 list.
