The Four Seasons story is well chronicled in the Jersey Boys musical and film. The team of Crewe, Gaudio, De Vito and Valli were one of the most successful acts of the 60s and 70s. This song is one of the lesser known hits, but like a lot of their material found further success with a good cover.

Bay City Rollers were just one of many bands hailed as the new Beatles. From Scotland they struggled through years of building an audience before a surprise top 10 UK hit in 1971 with Keep on Dancin. They were also unfortunately under the influence of child sex offender and predator Tam Paton who had protection from authorities. He organised for several of their songs to be recorded without any of the band present. On the bright side Roller Mania exploded in the UK first before going global. This cover of the four Seasons song was the fifth in a series of hits and their first UK number one. It was my first exposure to the impact of music on young females as I can recall two six year old girls screaming at this song hearing it on the radio. This song sounds better with a screaming delirious audience, but it is a better performance that the original as well. IMHO.
Next up, a cover we have seen in the zegras MAD artist drafts. I just love its ice cool delivery and performance.

These are the two "heavy hitters" that I expected to get a lot of votes. Of course, Nirvana has another cover that fits that bill, too. We'll see how it shakes out!
Also, our Deja Vote today is none other than the Travis cover of Britney Spears's "Baby One More Time"! It almost didn't happen when I accidentally got the order wrong for titus. He could have owned this song outright, but now he has to share ownership with scorchy.
That Travis cover is so weird. While living in the UK i bought a CD single of theirs and it has this as one of the B Sides. Never thought it would pop up here

Big day for Bonnie "Prince" Billy aka WIll Oldham in the countdown thanks to the 4 household. OH's selection just missed my list, so I was glad to see him ensure it was included.
As for mine, I'm so bummed that the cover is no longer on Spotify, so I have to plead with you all to listen to the Youtube link instead. I love the original so hard (Youtube version; Spotify version), but Cash brings such gravitas and a deep sorrow and pain to it...a "darkness," you might say. It's stunning. Achingly beautiful.

Do you have your data organized in a way that makes that easy? I know one could pull it by looking back through all of the round posts, but that would take some time.

Wouldn't take much to convince me that this is the greatest performance in music history. I have one or two others I'd put against it, but don't think I could sell them enough to override this one. The arrangement and production are as good as it gets. The singing's pretty good, too. THIS is what a record should sound like.

JML's Bay City Rollers link reminded me of the pre MTV era when music starved youngsters had to rely on tv shows like the British show Supersonic for anything outside of the U.S. top 40. Only a half hour long but very tightly packed.
Per wiki: Although the show featured performers with songs in the music charts, the show, unlike Top of the Pops, was not chart-based. Whilst Top of the Pops ran all year, Supersonic had a limited run with season one consisting of 30 editions and season two consisting of 28.
The show was recorded in front of an audience of teenagers at London Weekend's studios, then known as the South Bank Television Centre and used a style of production in which television cameras were highly visible and areas such as the production gallery were featured. Its producer and director also doubled as host, cueing in performances from the studio gallery instead of presenting conventional links to camera.

I don't know what exactly to say about this cover; I just like it.
I will add, though, that until I looked up information about the song itself, I didn't know that Little Eva wasn't the artist the song was written for, and in fact, Little Eva was the actual songwriter's (Carole King) babysitter. The intended singer, Dee Dee Sharp, turned it down, giving Eva the chance. But I'm sure most if not all of you dummies probably already knew that.
I don't know what exactly to say about this cover; I just like it.

- Enjoy The Silence - Nada Surf's cover is great. They update the sound and keep that dance tempo going.
- Baby One More Time - I like this version by Travis better than Britney's original.
- Wild World - This reggae version by Maxi Priest and John Gallen gets the body moving.

#14 I Will Survive - Cake (Gloria Gaynor)

Another song where the cover is very much in a different style with a different approach, though while keeping the spirit of the original. Cake keeps the lyrics mostly the same too, mostly changing the phrase "stupid locks" to... um, having a different first word. There were a few Cake covers to consider (heck, just on Fashion Nugget alone), but perhaps there's little surprise that this one made it high for me. It helps that I really enjoy both versions. Gloria's strong and powerful, carrying a tone that's fine with being independent, a woman that doesn't need to put up with any BS. Cake's version being more soft and stoic, of someone who felt all of the pain but was determined to push onward. Or maybe that's just John McCrea's voice. Regardless, there's also a fairly rich history to this song that helps add to it, even if little of that is personal to, well, me personally.
At #13 there's a song that I linked to a Youtube version instead of a Spotify one. Some will understand more than others.

I remember seeing an interview with Neil Young some years ago, and he was talking about how everyone borrows from others in music at some point, including himself as a borrower.
An example of a song that gave birth to others is "Too Much Monkey Business" by Chuck Berrry. Bob Dylan borrowed some of it for "Subterranean Homesick Blues." Elvis Costello borrowed some of that for "Pump it Up." Bono borrowed some of that for "Get On Your Boots." Songs get recycled in some fashion all the time.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night – Nirvana (traditional aka “In the Pines” – first known recording by “Dock” Walsh) -- I could go on about this one. A monumental performance. The "SHIVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" at the end is basically Kurt Cobain's death rattle.

Trying To Live My Life Without You - Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band (Otis Clay) -- Arguably Seger's second-best performance after Ramblin' Gamblin' Man. Grit and power without devolving into histrionics as he and the other Springsteen types were sometimes prone to do.

I discovered this during my Neil countdown and was hooked.
The vast majority of Down by the River covers are guitar blowouts, which is understandable because Neil's playing on the original was like few things that had been heard before in rock. In that department, I must once again tout Neil's performance of it with Phish at Farm Aid 1998: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUuaMWxUcKY.
But as I said when my first Neil cover showed up, I am not as interested in people trying to play guitar like Neil as I am in them putting his songs into entirely different contexts. And one of the best examples of that is Buddy Miles' version of Down by the River. Miles was more than familiar with the rock guitar hero milieu, having played with Mike Bloomfield, Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. But despite some freaky wah-wah playing at the beginning, he doesn't rely on that here. When it comes time to stretch out, most of the honors go to Andre Lewis' clavinet. The foreboding atmosphere of Neil's original remains, with the funky undertones enhancing but never interfering with it. Miles' vocal retains the wistfulness and poignancy of Neil's, while adding an extra layer of soulfulness; Neil couldn't have dreamed of hitting the notes that Miles does on "Drag ME-EEE". Also of interest, Miles changes the last word of the chorus from "dead" to "then". Everything is doubled down on the glorious 13-minute officially released live version. (Warning to krista: horn solos, the first of which teases "Grazing in the Grass".)
Like Neil's version, Miles' version was released as a single, reaching #68 on the Hot 100.
And no, I have no idea why Miles is singing "sha-la-la, the weather" right before the chorus.

I think my opinion of the way Wenner wrongly shaped what people think of as rock history is well-known here, so I'll not bore you guys with it anymore.
Grand Funk's music was not subtle. Aside from Mel on the bass (who was REALLY good), they weren't especially good musicians. They were basically a bar band who got lucky. But, man oh man, they hit me at the right time.

That makes sense @krista4, however, the bigger problem is that the title doesn't match what's anywhere. Going back and looking at the YouTube link, it's listed as Come as your kids, not the longer mash-up title. This isn't the first time the title or artists are listed incorrectly and it makes it a challenge at times to get them added into the lists.

As I mentioned somewhere along the way, I'm not compiling data and declaring "winning" songs, artists, etc. in this one, so no, I don't have that kind of data readily available.
