The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (1 Viewer)

32 (tie). The Little Mermaid

Scoresman - #51

I was too old/cool for this when it came out. And I'm not sure we ever watched this one with the kids, so it's possible I've never seen it.
I was also getting too old for these when it came out. This is not one I admitted to liking amongst friends.

Most Disney princesses had some noble cause like saving their kingdom or their family. Ariel just wanted some human ****.
I didn't see this until the '00s I was in my 30s and met my Disney-obsessed wife.

Maybe the difference you mention is because they adapted it from Hans Christian Andersen, who was not a typical source for them?

I've completely lost track of which Halloweens and Friday the 13ths I've seen and which ones I haven't. Aside from the first Halloween they all seem interchangeable to me.

I realize it was a pop culture sensation, but I don't have any personal ties to this.

Exactly, huge mega hit. My sister's favorite movie of all time.

This should be in the original 100, but lots of estrogen so not a lot of dudes gonna put this in their top 100. It would be in my top 100 for the pop culture impact.

Also, most men won't admit it, but they love them some "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen.

I have few Disney obsessed peeps in my life..... I guess it must be that nostalgic feeling about it, much like some of these movies.

The first Friday the 13th is much different from the rest as it's Jason's mom who is the killer.....then the final scene. The rest are Jason killing people in new, and interesting ways, for the most part.

The only thing I remember about this chick flick is my aunts looooooved it.......they really loved Swayze......I had long hair and listened to Megadeth......and my aunts liked it. Not exactly high on my list
Lol….hilarious post.

I have a soft spot for this one. I spent several summers up in the catskills with my grandparents. Great times meeting up at the hotels with guys and gals and getting into all kinds of trouble….and drinking for the first time…like really drinking. Lots of girls….wild nights….but still innocence around.

Hard to explain.

So the whole summers in the catskills vibe….I lived that…even though it was in 1983 and 1984.
I think my post, and yours, about this movie, is a perfect example of the nostalgia attached to( or lack there of) to these movies

36 (tie). A Very Brady Christmas
Scoresman - #10

I probably shouldn't have allowed this since I can't find a trailer. But, Maureen McCormick is top 10 all time.

I warned you there was a made for TV movie on my list.

I can only justify this as why it’s great to me. Huge Brady Bunch fan as a kid and this movie was an annual watch in my household. I would not be holding true to my ranking criteria if I omitted this.

And Jennifer Runyon, the only replacement cast member they needed, was hot as hell in this.
Don’t take any guff for your list, Scoresman.

.,.but 10?!?

Imagine movies you would watch annually, maybe at Christmas, with your family. Wouldn't that mean something to you? Thats what this is and it fits the criteria I posted. And yes, I still enjoy watching it.

Also keep in mid this the next 100. Not #10 on my overall 80s list.
Oh, don't give us that crap, you liked about 2 movies on the original 100. ;)

Now imagine the opposite, and there are big blockbuster movies you never watched and never formed any meaning or attachment to. They might not make your list, right? ;)

One of my wife’s favorite movies, but I’ve always enjoyed musicals / movies with great soundtracks so would have ranked high regardless

Can’t remember if it was a tweet but it was something like “I always thought the dad was a big jerk until I realized he just wanted a nice family vacation and his daughters kept screwing it up”
I mean his 17 year old daughter is having an abortion and hooking with some guy who is at least 25 years old. I absolutely get why he's unhappy.
25 feels like an underestimation. That's one of the things that struck me as well on a recent rewatch - I had the imagine of the overbearing, a-hole dad in this one. Turns out it's more like people are talking about in here, and I was on his side.

I would say that Friday has the most/best quality of sequels, but I also think that's because the bar was much lower at the start. Halloween 2 is a good sequel with some decent jumps and kills. On an island it feels better than the Friday movies, but when you go from 1 to 2 it feels like a much bigger drop off.

Besides the OG Halloween, I wouldn't argue with Halloween 2 and Friday 1-4 being in any order and I think they all are decent 80s slashers. Go farther down the sequel path for either franchise and you get into some pretty murky waters.

A worthy inclusion. Easily makes my top 200 but not top 100.

Also, we are on a min-Val Kilmer run here.
I was surprised this didn't make the first 100
I watched it a couple nights after our countdown ended. It's toward the bottom of my top 100. It's still a fun watch, but I don't have a ton of room for fantasy type movies now. I have it higher than some others (a couple listed in here, I believe) but not a genre I gravitate to unless I'm watching with somebody else.

We keep talking about Carpenters' scores. I feel a distinction should be made between "iconic" and "great". To me it's one of the reasons I don't like some of his movies - more Carpenter synth score. It's a nit-pick, I just feel like he kept going back to the well too much with the same tones and music - which goes back to that original discussion about Carpenter and his "it's a job" approach to his movies.

I agree Halloween 2 is the best sequel. I think the Jason series peaked with part 4 and 6. The Tommy Jarvis arc is what I think of when I think of that Friday the 13th series.

Little Mermaid. Another one of my wife’s favorites but I also really liked it, feel like it kicked off a renaissance of sorts for Disney. also have some good Hipster Ariel memes

Willow - liked it as a kid, watched recently, some cool scenes but another one where the effects look pretty dated. Have not dove into the series yet

61 (tie). Summer School
Lambskin - #23

I didn't have this anywhere near my list, but it does hold a fond memory for me. First time I ever got high was at a sleepover at a buddy's house in 9th grade, and we watched this.
I watched this movie an obscene amount of times. Think it was on HBO one summer or something.

Great 80's movie.
Yeah I feel like I’ve seen it 100 times. Loved the horror movie scene in it

Loved this too even though as kid I knew all the actors looked 40 instead of HS seniors.

A bit off topic and made in the 70s but all this Halloween and Friday 13th talk has me thinking about Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Does the original still hold up? I remember it being creepy when I was a kid but haven’t seen it since. I know they had a few sequels but never bothered with them despite my love of horror.

yes, and remarkably well, at that.

can still get that visceral gut punch every time Pam is dropped on that meat hook, e.g.

it'll never lose that appeal - and the further away we get from '74, the more appreciation i have for Tobe's cutting vision at that time.

Scary? Not really.

But TCM is still a rare old movie that still causes a visceral reaction. Very effective in putting you in that environment. I feel like I can smell that disgusting house.

What makes TCM different is that despite its title, there is very little violence - it's mostly suspense. Actually can say the same about Halloween for the most part. Only after Halloween's success did the genre resort to a lot of blood and gore to captivate audiences.

yep.

i mentioned Pam on the meat hook, but ... there's also Kirk tripping down the hallway, as he approaches that metal door, i mean, you just know it ain't gonna end well - then WHAP! it's pulled open, and first look at Leatherface - i have watched that scene dozens of times, but the claustrophobic creepiness STILL sends a shiver.

Sally in the burlap getting whacked with the broom by Cook - WT actual F?

... and then the dinner table with Granpa - could go on and on - but back to your point, it were the atmospheric horror far outpacing the actual carnage.

Since made-for-tv movies are in play, I hope the Brady one isn't the only one selected, though I guess we're too far along.
Yes, anxiously awaiting Disney's Return Of The Shaggy Dog.
Guess again.
Return of the Shaggy D.A.?
I'm guessing it was the one that almost all of America watched and talked about from the early 80s. Even Reagan talked about it.

Something About Amelia

There were a lot of movies in the 80s that were like Willow. Fun to watch, not going to win any awards, you feel like you can safely recommend it to most people. I liked it a lot when it came out and thought it was a bigger deal than it turned out to be, but I haven't rewatched it since. Not sure if it never makes it on cable tv, or just doesn't come up on my algorithms in Netflix or Prime but really haven't heard anyone talking about this one in years.
