The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (1 Viewer)

Since made-for-tv movies are in play, I hope the Brady one isn't the only one selected, though I guess we're too far along.
Yes, anxiously awaiting Disney's Return Of The Shaggy Dog.
Guess again.
Return of the Shaggy D.A.?
I'm guessing it was the one that almost all of America watched and talked about from the early 80s. Even Reagan talked about it.
This one?
Something About Amelia

I saw that one when it came out. I never viewed Ted Danson the same.

... no surprise that after this all that were left in the dating cupboard for TD were Whoopie

A bit off topic and made in the 70s but all this Halloween and Friday 13th talk has me thinking about Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Does the original still hold up?

yes, and remarkably well, at that.

can still get that visceral gut punch every time Pam is dropped on that meat hook, e.g.

it'll never lose that appeal - and the further away we get from '74, the more appreciation i have for Tobe's cutting vision at that time.

I’ll have to do a rewatch. It’s funny how some of these movies you thought were scary growing up are downright comedic as an adult. Have a feeling that’s not the case here. Just watched the trailer and it’s just as creepy and low budget (in a good way) as I remember it.

How was TCM 2 and 3? Assume just cheap sequels cashing in on the name?

What makes TCM different is that despite its title, there is very little violence - it's mostly suspense. Actually can say the same about Halloween for the most part. Only after Halloween's success did the genre resort to a lot of blood and gore to captivate audiences.
Some of that was Hooper trying for a PG rating.

Yes. It's very slow for a while, though, but I think that helps set the mood. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't think it's saturated with a music score, which also contributes to that mood.

Hooper envisioned the OG as a black comedy ... there were so many messages intertwined in it, tho ... i kinda see it in spots, but it's reserved.

so he went full on feel for TCMII ... it's worth the watch just for the hideously bizarre Chop Top, one of the genre's great underrated mooks - Bill Mosely killed it.

Stretch is pretty awesome, too ... not the most revered final girl, but she had her moments ... and, of course, Dennis Hopper with dual barreled chainsaws, 'cuz why the eff not? 😅

much more blood and guts and gore - right off the top, so to speak ... it's a fun watch - hell, even Cook (Jim Siedow) brings the funny.

as far as the rest, seek out any iteration with R. Lee Ermey ... he just chews it the eff up, making the D.I. from "FMJ" look like Kermit in comparision - one of those features Biel as fg, pretty good effort all around.

would be remiss not to mention "TCM - Next Generation", most notable for a very wide caboosed Zelwegger whining and moaning her way thru, and for McConaughey's ridiculous performance - it's so cotdamn awful, but ya gotta see it once strictly for the cheezy artifact angle.

- they both tried to block the re-release once they both hit it bigger in the biz.

36 (tie). A Very Brady Christmas
Scoresman - #10

I probably shouldn't have allowed this since I can't find a trailer. But, Maureen McCormick is top 10 all time.
Come on folks, there's schtick and there's bad schtick. I'm a big Brady Bunch fan and even I won't watch this concoction ever again.

the Eve Plumb "Dutchboy" coif makes it utterly unwatchable.

She looked better in The Brady Brides.

definitely outpacing MMc here, who were a raging blowhound at the time.

and ya just know Jan had to put out more & try harder, what with being in Marcia's shadow for so long ... Plumb brings that edge - and looked damn good doing it.

Forgot about that one and would like to keep it that way.

The one I had in mind had a slightly more positive mood.

There were a lot of movies in the 80s that were like Willow. Fun to watch, not going to win any awards, you feel like you can safely recommend it to most people. I liked it a lot when it came out and thought it was a bigger deal than it turned out to be, but I haven't rewatched it since. Not sure if it never makes it on cable tv, or just doesn't come up on my algorithms in Netflix or Prime but really haven't heard anyone talking about this one in years.

Disney+

32 (tie). The Little Mermaid
Lambskin - #19
Scoresman - #51

I was too old/cool for this when it came out. And I'm not sure we ever watched this one with the kids, so it's possible I've never seen it.

32 (tie). Halloween 2
Scoresman - #9

I probably should have found room for this in my list. Those hospital scenes were creepy AF. And of course the greatest horror theme/score ever.

I was way too cool to se The Little Mermaid upon release. But when we became parents in 2005 it was Disney overload for 5-7 years. This one was one of the top movies on repeat along with The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Classic Disney and the peak of hand drawn Disney magic. Oh I miss real animation dearly. It was an art. Now it is a lost art.

Halloween 2.....easily the best sequel in the series. I am a huge.....I mean huge Halloween buff. The OG is my favorite horror film of all time. Halloween 2 despite it’s obvious flaws has aged amazingly well. And IMO this was the best Michael Myers we ever had. His menacing, stoic walk was perfection.

The opening scene where we find Loomis outside in front of the house where he just put 6 slugs into Meyers......”I have been trick or treated to death” “You don’t know what death is!”

And BOOM we are off to the races with that incredible score updated with heavy synths for 1981......perfection.

Not that one, either.

TBH, it underwhelms if you consider the cast, comprised of ascending and descending stars (making it more of a sentimental pick for me).

Always remember the scene in the hallway in which MM stabs the blonde nurse in the back and lifts her off her feet.

I don’t think this is the thread for you, GB.
Right back at you.
Here’s a top 100 for you. Every movie exactly where it should be.

:lmao:

All y'all threw a hissy fit about ours and had to have your own countdown and it wasn't even that pretentious in the top 10.
Like you said in your thread, there’s a difference between critiquing picks and ****ting on the whole process. I knew I would get flak for certain picks but some of this falls in the latter category.

I probably shouldn't have allowed this since I can't find a trailer. But, Maureen McCormick is top 10 all time.

I warned you there was a made for TV movie on my list.

I can only justify this as why it’s great to me. Huge Brady Bunch fan as a kid and this movie was an annual watch in my household. I would not be holding true to my ranking criteria if I omitted this.

And Jennifer Runyon, the only replacement cast member they needed, was hot as hell in this.
Don’t take any guff for your list, Scoresman.

.,.but 10?!?

Imagine movies you would watch annually, maybe at Christmas, with your family. Wouldn't that mean something to you? Thats what this is and it fits the criteria I posted. And yes, I still enjoy watching it.

Also keep in mid this the next 100. Not #10 on my overall 80s list.
Now imagine the opposite, and there are big blockbuster movies you never watched and never formed any meaning or attachment to. They might not make your list, right? ;)
Yeah… but Raiders?

That was neither a shot at a pick of yours or the process of this countdown. I just thought it was funny that the link you posted was even more artsy fartsy at the top than ours was.

My comment about crapping on the process wasn't directed at you, it was directed at the person I quoted. I figured if all he wanted was a generic IMDB list of movies, then that list should make him happy.

If I ever commented that made you feel like your entire process was ****ty, I apologize. I will go to my grave critiquing your Raiders pick, among a few others, but would never actually want you to change your criteria just to please the masses.

And yes I do think watching Raiders as an adult should leave you feeling that it is amongst the greatest movies of the 80s.

To me, this post reflects a lot my thoughts I had while doing this. The bolded describes 100s of movies from that time for me, many that won't even show up on either list. Fun movies you know you could throw on for a party or for the family. BUT many of them have warts or maybe aren't great for sitting there and just watching them. At least that is my experience, and I tried to get my list to reflect those thoughts.

IMO what we are seeing in these couple threads is that because most of us were kids at that time, we also probably watched most of the movies and have attachments to them. It was also a completely different era in that many of us probably just had 10-20 options around the house and watched the crap out of a handful of movies. Most of us don't have that attachments to other eras - maybe the 90s, but it wasn't nearly the "wtf??" reactions like we are getting here. Fun decade for movies, and I have been enjoying the trip down memory lane.

My bad, I thought you were referring to my post.

Honestly, I welcome the critique and discussion on picks. I knew the Raiders pick was going to be issue #1 - sort of like my dislike of Goodfellas for the 90s countdown. I also have 0 issues with the Brady and Toaster picks either. These are ones 100% like what I talked about above - good, fun movies that I would expect most families to have fun with. (although isn't toaster low-key dark?)

Yeah fairly dark IMO, the ending of Toy Story 3 is basically a ripoff of Toaster, which IIRC most of that team went on to start Pixar

That would make sense. I think in one pr movie drafts we had a scariest scene in a kids movie category. I think I took something from this movie.

This is also a reason I largely stopped showing 80s movies to my son. Compared to the crap we were watching from the 00s, the movies from my youth had those odd ****ed up parts that were weirdly scary. It felt like I had a really small window to show him some of these movies.

Watched Johnny Dangerously. It was alright. Piscopo does a great Richard Widmark impression, Griffen Dunne is boring as always, Marilu Henner is always enjoyable. It's silly and I enjoyed it but it's ultimately forgettable.

something that struck me today as I was doing my research for the next music draft

isn't it weird that the music from the 80s (or 90s) seem nearly as outdated as the movies from that same time?

I mean - no comparison.

40 (tie). Beastmaster
Lambskin - #13

If I would have made my list in the 80's this probably would have been in my top 20.
One of the times watching this on cable with a buddy, during the fight seen (with the weird bat like creatures that hugged people to death) we could here a faint "We're not gonna take it, no we ain't gonna take it" playing over it and I thought it to be strange as I had never heard that before in the other viewings. It really matched the part in the movie perfectly. Turns out, my sister had the radio on in the other room and the song was playing there and not in the movie. I always think of this when that song comes on.

Great inclusion on the list. I would have bet money it wouldn't have been in here.

32 (tie). Halloween 2
Scoresman - #9

I probably should have found room for this in my list. Those hospital scenes were creepy AF. And of course the greatest horror theme/score ever.

I probably watched the hot-tub scene 89 million times when I had the VHS of this.
That scene was hot - until the nurse started nibbling on Mike’s fingers. That and when she started melting.

don't kink shame, brah
