The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (2 Viewers)

I doubt this gets the praises that Conan does. I love Oliver Stone, and Bogosian is excellent in this role. Based on the murder of Alan Berg by white supremacists, but with plenty of Stone's typical artistic license.

Eric Bogosian was brilliant - he plays a great "out there' guy

btw: he did a great job as an "ex-partner" of Larry Sanders - just a spin off of a Lenny Bruce kind of thing, and the guy that didn't make vs. the guy that did (also as a result of being an addict)

This is the one we all were dying to get a chance to see. But from what I remember there way way much more innuendo than actual nudity. Still a rite of passage for anyone my age.
Nah, that shower scene had plenty. Plus there was Kim Cattrall getting busy in the loft!

The transgressiveness of watching this as a teen aside, this was a more complex film than most others in the genre, tackling issues from antisemitism to peer pressure to police misconduct.

However, I thought Porky's II was horrible and didn't bother to see Porky's Revenge.

Another underrated gem. Great cast. Not really a coming of age story, as these guys are all out of high school, but still maturing and finding their way in life.

watched this for the first time about 5 years ago...definitely an under the radar movie that many of us growing up in the 80s wouldn't have noticed.

Many of us, particularly those that frequent the music threads, can probably relate to the records scene. Minus being such an a-hole about it like Daniel Stern was.
The one where I really feel seen is Jack Black haranguing about Belle and Sebastian in High Fidelity. But this is relatable too.

77 on my list, well played Shuke
Diner just seemed very authentic. A very real moment in time. And even though I didn't know anything about Baltimore in the 50's/60's, the character quirks and interactions among the friends seemed real.

The Boogie character, played by Mickey Rourke, wound up killing it. He started Merry Go Round, the mall chain that most of us remember, and lives in Aspen, spends a ton on charity and generally just has a good time. I knew him pretty well, great guy.

It's the epitome of 80s high adventure sword/sorcery movies. Beastmaster/Krull/Red Sonja all wish they were this movie.
The reboot with Jason Moma as Conan is actually pretty entertaining (and crazy gory).
I didn't even know they did a reboot.....not surprised they chose Mamoa. That's essentially who he was in Game of Thrones.
It may have been after GoT - but was before he was Aquaman, etc. - so he was still kind of an unknown when it was released. It's not a great movie but an entertaining one.

I still think it's in the conversation for best superhero movie. I only rank The Dark Knight above it

I have it #4

Dark Knight
Superman
Iron Man
Superman II
I would entertain a ranking of Iron Man above it and possibly Spiderman 2. I get the thought of having Superman over Superman 2, as I suspect those that put 1 over 2 favor the drama of the origin story over the higher action 2 provides. I personally found part 2 more exciting with more compelling villains (while still keeping Lex heavily involved).

Yeah that's why I love Superman 2. It's just a lot of fun. The reason I have 1 slightly above is the ending of 2. The Amnesia Kiss and that saran wrap emblem throw. WTF was that?

I was more put off by the reversal of the Earth's spin literally turning back time in 1. As if Superman wasn't invincible enough, now he can reverse time whenever things didn't go his way.

The villains in II are great and are definitely the strength of that movie...everybody loves them some Zod.

The original superman was so well executed on multiple levels that I tend to side with it as the better of the two but both are great and I certainly wouldn't fault anybody for ranking II ahead of I.

29 (tie). Friday the 13th part 2
Scoresman - #8

Pretty good slasher flick. I love how these original theatrical trailers basically showed you how everyone was going to die. :lmao:

It also features the first pair of boobs I ever saw.
Part five for me!
I am really surprised at all the love for the sequels in this franchise. I thought it eventually became more of a joke of itself and overboard on the bad guy that won't die. I thought the original was really well done for the time and the story was great. The twist with the mom being the killer and then the jump scare at the end leaving you wondering. Just a great story and movie for it's time.

To be fair, I don't remember part 2 at all so maybe I need to watch it again and I don't think I have ever seen 4 or beyond because at that point they just seemed too repetitive and overdone for me.

I also thought the original
Nightmare on Elm Street
was very well done for its time as well. The story very inventive. Then it became a comedy of itself either. (I put the spoiler tag because I don't think it has been mentioned yet).

My main issue with Part 1 is how is the mom physically capable of doing all the things she did with the victims? She's not going to be able to string a body over a tree branch for example.

That's why Part 2 is my favorite. Jason is still somewhat human. He is not some immortal zombie killing machine yet. It makes it way scarier for me.

It's a slasher movie where someone is killing an entire camp of counselors. You already have to suspend some belief so why not just enjoy the twist/story. I have always been able to not let that type of stuff detract from the story if it was well done so that didn't bother me at all.

I do have to give #2 another shot though at some point. I remember absolutely nothing about it.

It's a minor nitpick. I did have Part 1 at 32 on my list after all. Both are great movies.

I'm not a big fan of the series or slasher movies in general - but for some reason I saw 4 on the opening night. It was the most fun I ever had in a theater - the crowd went nuts cheering every time Jason was on screen. It wasn't a good movie, but the crowd was awesome.

I dont have time to keep up with the thread, but can we talk about this?

:penalty:

How is Caddyshack not on everyone's list? Sure, the Oscar 101 crew dont like true blue 'merican movies, but only Shuke even had it on his list? We have been through what, 5 top 100 lists of movies of the 80s and only 1 person has it in their top 100?

Unfnbelievable

I was 3 years old when this came out. Not exactly the target demographic. I did of course see it later in life and I liked it (it's in my "next 100") but it doesn't resonate as much as other 80s comedies do. Ghostbusters has obvious appeal to kids. Porky's has teets. Fast Times is about young people, etc and also has teets. Caddyshack is about... golf.
