The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (4 Viewers)

52. Caddyshack
shuke - #17

Another one of my solo picks where I don't understand what is happening around here.

This is the one I alluded to that maybe there was a mistake, or everyone was gaslighting me.

Here's the kicker. Lambskin had Caddyshack 2 as #58 on his list. :loco:
Here's the thing. Aside from Bill Murray's scenes, I honestly don't think it's that funny. Murray's character and performance are awesome, but he basically exists outside the rest of the movie, which seems mostly like generic hamminess to me. Chevy Chase is particularly wooden in this film and sucks the air out of every scene he's in. The plot is nothing special, the jokes/lines aren't on par with the best comedies of the time and the characters are too broad for me to care about what happens to them. The Blues Brothers is orders of magnitude better despite having an equally flimsy plot, for the reasons I stated in my comments on it.
I completely disagree with this. Chase plays a perfectly quirky, lazy, trust fund *******.....a role he excels at. Murray, Dangerfield, Knight, were all great....Noonan, Maggie, Lacey, Tony, Spalding all perfect for this goofy *** flick.....I even enjoy that gopher, Carl spacklers arch nemesis

And pretty much any time one of my buddies is taking a shot in anything, darts, pool, whatever.....they get Noonan'ed....as they should.
Also, I grew up near a golf course so I've always appreciated/enjoyed that environment.

Count me among those that never found Caddyshack funny until a friend told me what hoi polloi meant. Then I gave it a B.

What a great ****ing joke.

Another solid action flick. Great cheesy one liners typical for Arnold. I remember the novella to be very different in tone/theme, and great for its own reasons.
Also great performance from Richard Dawson as he diversified from just a being a Hollywood Squares go-to panelist/horny, coked-up game show host.

A great sexy thriller from De Palma. I think this is relatively unknown, so I linked to what looks like a fan-made trailer. The original theatrical trailer doesn't really provide much info.
I think haven't seen this one because I always get it mixed up with Body Heat which I know I've seen. I'll have to turn it on sometime. I usually like De Palma stuff.

clearly none of you guys are golfers.

it remains THE most quoted movie by every golfer of anyone under the age of 80

and would still be in my top 5 of all movies ever

I prefer Body Heat but the question to ask yourself here is this: have you ever seen a movie that breaks into a Frankie Goes to Hollywood music video? If you answer, yes, then you have seen Body Double.

I loved this when I saw it as a kid and am really scared to watch this again now.
I mentioned this in the other thread....

My wife and I fired it up a couple weeks ago. She had never seen it, and I hadn't watched in quite a few years. She was unimpressed......I liked it ok for nostalgia, but it definitely did not age well.

I think the discussion about it was the concept is cool, and it would be a good candidate for a re-make. I agree with that sentiment.

Yeah, man. The house in the hills, there’s a surreal, off-center vibe in this movie.

Love this movie to this day…..visionary tale from Richard Bachman (Stephen King’s pen name).

“Food riot in progress”

“Killian…..I’ll be back”

“Only in a rerun”

This movie is a romp.

Body Double is an 80’s guilty pleasure and is a lot of fun.

If you like Depalma…..and had not seen this….do so.

There is another great crime/court room thriller from the same year starting Jeff Bridges and Glenn Close…..such cheesy greatness.

Dude….it’s a blast….and the music kicks ***. Especially the main theme.

I enjoy Murray, Rodney, and Chevy but Ted Knight crushes his role. His scenes are the best in my humble opinion.

I couldn't sleep last night and at about 4am i started compiling a list off the top of my head of movies that haven't been mentioned yet but could have been in the top 100 list. Came up with 56 movies without any help. It will be interesting to see how many end up in this list. I'll bet it's < 10.

I think as shuke mentioned earlier, your age is going to be a huge determining factor for the 80s. The 80s is where the blockbuster was born and also where they peaked IMO, so if you happened to be a kid growing up in the 80s, I think going to the movies became a much bigger part of the childhood experience as opposed to other generations.

When I look at the 90s countdown for example, I don't have nearly as much contention with the list that was generated.

Ted Knight is underappreciated. He is also incredible in Mary Tyler Moore as Ted Baxter.

It's actually tomorrow in Tokyo. Do you realize that there are people alive here in Minneapolis who are already dead in Tokyo?

Golfed a ton, still don't think it's funny and I think I was still too young of a demographic to have it quoted that much since Happy Gilmore happened.

yeah, you're the same guy that think the Beatles suck though.
So his taste is music and movies is questionable. Information I could have used at the start of the first 80s movie thread.
