The NFL is Horrible This Year (2 Viewers)

The league needs to move to 18 games over 20 weeks. Space the bye weeks out better. I might be in favor of each division having a collective bye week - for example, the NFC south all have a week 9 bye. If there’s two bye weeks there would need to be more than 4 teams off unless your bye weeks extend from week 3-18, but those details can be managed. This might not be favorable with TV but as a concept it’s worth considering imo.

It gets worse every year. Stupid rules and practice is against the rules. The result is "exciting" really bad football.

Yep. Every time we blindly side with labor/players in this league, the practices get cut and quality goes down. It’s the age-old situation of “it’s hard damn work not doing any work.”

And I get it. It’s brutal on the body and free time is king. I don’t begrudge it. It’s just the ones who are really dedicated are prevented because “volunteer” practices are anything but. And those that can’t help themselves ruin it. “Everybody go home.”

This year is actually not bad. The problem, I think, is twofold. The new kickoff rules have spotted offenses a first down or so on average and the starting field position

Actually, crap. I can’t believe I found this. I thought I was so smart knowing that the Cover 2 was instituted (not created but mastered by Fangio) in 2019~ or so to beat Patrick Mahomes quite specifically. Then it spread to other teams to beat Mahomes, and then they used it for the good QBs, and then every QB!

This explains it. Delves into both. Give ‘em the ball ten yards closer to the end zone and take away the deep ball.

Yawn. It was yr QB they threw it at, ChiefD

This might be the worst year of the NFL I have ever seen.

Awful football.
Agreed.

There's like three good offensive lines in the whole NFL

It ain’t the offensive lines. It is that they are dropping everybody deep and the receivers can’t go anywhere. Funnel them to the flats and seams and that’s what you’re left with as an offense. The lines seem lousy because the coverage buys time for the pass rushers. So you dink, dunk, or run. Here, we can all use some ball knowledge. Peace.

How to Beat the Cover 2 Zone

You Think Your Biggest Problem Is Your Opponent. You’re Wrong. It’s Time.

Why is this important? Because we are looking to exploit the 2 deep seams and the defense is going to offset this by assigning an underneath defender to cover our slot receivers as they travel to the deep halves. When the defense does this we are looking for ways to attack that area where the linebacker left. This area will be in the mid-hook or curl areas depending who the defense has carrying the slot to the safeties.

High Low The Corners

The corner in cover 2 will be responsible for the flat to his side. They will also be asked to get depth on any ball thrown behind them to buy time for the safety as he works outside the hash. A common way to put this corner in a bind is to run a route in front of him and behind him. The Smash concept is a common way to do this with the outside receiver running a five yard hitch as the slot receiver runs a corner route. It is always important to not only study the depth of the cornerback when attacking this area but also the width of the safety’s alignment.

Sit Down In Zones

There will be holes in the underneath zones even though the defense has five underneath defenders. This is particularly true when you diagnose which linebacker is getting depth to help the safeties. The quarterback and receivers need to understand this. Pass plays should be favored that are designed to allow a receiver to throttle in a hole vs zone coverage. These are better options than ones where the receiver is staying on the move like they do vs man coverage.

Make Life Hard On The Linebackers

When a team plays 2 deep they are giving up a defender, namely a safety to defend the run. Because of this the defensive front and linebackers have to do a great job compensating for this. An offensive coordinator can take advantage of this by calling play action passes that require the linebackers to freeze or even step up before dropping to their underneath zones on a pass. This can go a long way with creating an area behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties where you can run crossing routes and other similar concepts.

I actually thought it was decent until this week, kind of hurts the product when have six teams on a bye and four of them have winning records, and three of them have legit shots to win their divisions and make some noise in the playoffs.
And some teams have byes in week 14. Shouldn't be past week 12 IMO.

While I thought 16 games was perfect, 17 is idiotic. Even numbers just work better.

Also, 6 playoff teams was perfect. Two teams with a bye week. 7 is idiotic too. That odd numbered thing again. Stop it NFL

Only 3 afternoon games kind of sucks.

This is a problem too. They need to space these games out better.

You'd think it wouldn't be that hard.

You would think, look at bye weeks. There is no reason to have the bye weeks spread out this far.
No reason they can’t have the bye weeks from 7-10, 8 teams each week -4 afc and 4 nfc.

The biggest problem is too many national tv games. The play suffers when it’s constant Sunday, Monday, Thursday nights, European travel, etc. just not enough recovery time.

I am fine with that too. Anything is better than what they do now.

(a) There's a total lack of parity.

You have a couple of surprise teams every year, but before the season starts you can predict 80% of the (competitive) playoff teams. We're still in the stage of the season where some records are close (Bears are one game behind the Lions) but competitiveness is not. There are very wide gaps.

Hell almost a third of the league (10 teams) hasn't appeared in the playoffs since the 2021 season.

(b) officiating is horrible.

And the NFL doesn't care. There are way too many rules applied inconsistently. I enjoy football and fantasy but Red Zone now. I struggle to watch many stand along games due to officiating. Its hard to invest when single, obvious blown calls swing games. Or stupid stuff like Patrick Mahomes trucking defenders near the sideline, then gets trucked himself finally and its a defensive penalty.

I think they're thinking about their wallets and the 17 is to get to 18. I actually don't just think, we know.

This and it's the most overlooked aspect of FF for most who play, it's not fun tracking OL for many
The Rams and the Colts have good to great OL play this season especially run blocking
Most OL are basically average to below in the NFL, you add in injuries to 1 or 2 starters along the OL and things are going to be tough for the offense to make plays

Some QBs can make an avg OL look a lot better than it is, some RBs are more patient and allow for their blocks to take place before they start darting thru holes
I know the 3 OL thing is a joke but he's not far off with the problem for most teams, poor OL play up and down

I know. Everything is about more revenue. 16 games with 6 playoff teams was perfect and they screw it up due to greed.

Yeah, I really figured you knew. Just figured we were getting to 18 at some point, so . . .

I'd really love to see them with 17 Weeks, 16 games, and you play everybody in your conference once so errrrrrrybody plays the same schedule and you have a real Super Bowl. This unbalanced garbage just means we don't get to see the best teams in the playoffs. The football sample size is small enough as it is, and then they restrict it?

I get it's tradition, but it's not the best way to figure out merit.
