The OFFICIAL 2007 Boston Red Sox Thread (1 Viewer)

I still don't get the lack of love for Lowell. He's leading the team in RBI, is one HR away from leading the team in that category, is hitting over .300 and plays great defense. I don't see at this point how adding Teixeira helps the team this year.
 I have an unsettling amount of manlove for that guy and I don't buy into the second half fade destiny. A guy the Sox should deal now is Gabbard. He's pitched well and his value will never be higher. He does not have the plus stuff that the other young "untouchable" arms have. Not sure what you can get for him, but I would think he has some value if packaged with one of the young OF prospects like Murphy or Moss (I don't want to see elsbury dealt).
My question is what would they be looking to acquire in a trade? Their weakest links have been CF and SS and both Crisp and Lugo have started to come around. I never was a big fan of Drew, but he makes so much money that he pretty much has to play.Basically, I can't see them not playing Manny, Papi, Youk, Lowell, Pedroia, Tek, or Drew. Even though they seem to have several younger guys waiting in the wings, I'd almost rather see them get a rent a starting pitcher type to get through the year if Schilling is shaky. I'm not convinced that having to start 2 of Lester, Gabbard, and Tavarez will be successful the rest of the way (assuming Schilling is out longer than expected). I think all three of them could do well enough to keep the Sox in most games but some days they will get lit up to the point where a win would be improbable. So most starts you'd have to live with 3-4 runs allowed in 6 IP. That's ok and will keep you in the game, but I don't see many top outings on a regular basis. Gabbard had two really nice starts recently, but I'm waiting for him to give up 6 runs and not make it out of the first inning.

I can't think of any supposedly available starters who are better options than Gabbard or Lester. As for what they need, a righthanded OF with a decent bat to replace Wily Mo is the obvious need. Again, not much out there - maybe Reggie Sanders? Good news is it doesn't take much to get him. They could probably also upgrade the Javier Lopez lefty spot in the bullpen, though I won't pretend to know who is available out there for that role.

They may already have the lefty spot ready in Pawtucket: Craig Breslow has been lights out this season and deserves the first crack at that role. He's very good.

Players on their radar appear to be . . .

Hitters: Mark Teixeira, Adam Dunn, Jermaine Dye, Reggie Sanders, Todd Helton

Relief pitchers: Octavio Dotel, Salomon Torres, Akinori Otsuka, Damaso Marte

Trade Winds: Atlanta eyeing Teixeira

Mark Teixeira to Atlanta?

A move to the National League East team would make sense in many ways, but it remains to be seen whether the Rangers and Braves will be able to reach an agreement on a trade that would send the 27-year-old first baseman from Texas to Atlanta before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

For now, however, Atlanta has apparently moved past Boston as the front-runners for Teixeira's services.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, the two sides still had not reached agreement on a deal that would send Teixeira to the Braves for switch-hitting catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and prospects. The identity of the other players involved is believed to be one of the holdups in completing this deal. According to sources, Braves pitching prospect Jo-Jo Reyes and 18-year-old shortstop Elvis Andrus are among those who have been discussed.

With Curt Schilling set to make his second minor league rehab start today in Toledo, Terry Francona announced that Schilling would be making a third rehab start before rejoining the team. He'll start on July 31 at Columbus. It's the last day of the PawSox road trip before the team heads back to Pawtucket.

-per the Globe

That puts him on track to return in Seattle on Aug. 5.

Trade rumor front:

Sox are interested in Todd Helton (again) and Mark Teixeira. Rumors have the Sox trying to move Youkilis to make it happen. I can't see why they wouldn't move Mike Lowell instead because of age and contract.

Umm it might have something to do with the team they'd be trading with would rather have Youk than Lowell.

I think you are onto an old rumor...
According to a baseball official, the Red Sox are discussing several deals, mainly for hitters, but the price tag for the Rangers' switch-hitting first baseman, Mark Teixeira, is still prohibitive. The Rangers are looking for a combination of Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, and a third player.

The Sox have offered the Rangers a few packages, but they've been rejected.

There's the possibility of a deal with the White Sox for Jermaine Dye, but the White Sox are asking for a package too rich for Boston's blood.

The Red Sox have been asked for Ellsbury, Buchholz, and Jon Lester in virtually every trade discussion. Two names mentioned in smaller deals (Devil Rays infielder Ty Wigginton) are reliever Manny Delcarmen and Double A righthander Justin Masterson. But the Sox probably wouldn't surrender them for a player of Wigginton's caliber.
Nice to see WMP go 4 for 5 last night, now maybe someone will take him off our hands and return reasonable value...http://mlb.mlb.com/news/wrap.jsp?ymd=20070...sp&c_id=mlb

Yes but if the Sox throw in a player like Ellsbury it will be Lowell and not Youk. I'm not sure where the Red Sox are going to go with this but I highly doubt you see Theo trade his blue chip draftees. Bucholtz, Ellsbury are considered untouchables. Lester may get the door but I doubt it. The trade I think we'll most likely see is Wiggington for Delcarmen.

Schilling last night w/ PawSox:

5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K. 66 pitches, 44 strikes

NEWS OF THE DAY

Everyone asking for Buchholz, Lester, Ellsbury

If the prices don't come down, don't expect the Sox to make a deal before the deadline. According to the Globe's Nick Cafardo, the Red Sox have been asked for Jacoby Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz, and Jon Lester in virtually every trade discussion. ... In Friday's Red Sox notebook, the Cafardo writes, "According to one American League general manager, his team is well beyond the 'kicking the tires' stage. The price tags are still too high, which is why the Red Sox have not been able to make a deal. A major deal might be unlikely for the Sox, but the source said prices come down closer to the deadline." Later Cafardo adds, "One industry source said the Red Sox are one of the most active teams as the deadline approaches, but will not surrender their top prospects in packages to obtain (Mark) Teixeria or Adam Dunn from the Reds." ... Major league sources confirmed to the Globe's Nick Cafardo earlier this week that, besides Ty Wigginton, the Sox also have interest in Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira; White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye; Oakland outfielder Bobby Kielty, who was recently designated for assignment; and Dodgers third base prospect Andy LaRoche, who has been hot in Triple A Las Vegas, a team the Red Sox' Allard Baird has been scouting.

Wily Mo on the move?

In Friday's edition of the Providence Journal, Joe McDonald and Sean McAdam write, "The club is searching for an outfield option in the event it finds someone to take Wily Mo Pena. One industry source said as many as four teams have expressed an interest in Pena, and Pittsburgh and San Diego are known to be two of them. The Pirates have two relievers — Damaso Marte and Salomon Torres — to deal for Pena, though to date the two teams have yet to come to an agreement. The clubs were scheduled to talk again last night. Most of the teams with an interest in Pena view acquiring him as a component for the future, but the Padres, who lead the N.L. West, are desperate for power, especially since they play their home games in massive Petco Park. Pena produced one of his finest performances of the 2007 season Thursday by registering four hits and four RBIs in the Red Sox 14-9 win over Cleveland.

Yankees getting Wiggy with it?

In Friday's edition of the New York Post, George King writes, "According to talent evaluators from AL and NL clubs the Yankees and Devil Rays are moving closer to a deal that would send Proctor to St. Petersburg for utility infielder Ty Wigginton. 'The Devil Rays really want him,' the source said of Proctor, who may be converted into a starter for Tampa Bay. 'The problem is that other teams want him, too.'" In Friday's Red Sox notebook, the Globe's Nick Cafardo writes, "Two names mentioned in smaller deals (Devil Rays infielder Ty Wigginton) are reliever Manny Delcarmen and Double A righthander Justin Masterson. But the Sox probably wouldn't surrender them for a player of Wigginton's caliber. The Cubs entered the Wigginton hunt yesterday, joining the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, and Twins. Wigginton is making $2.7 million this season and is projected to get in the $4 million to $5 million range in arbitration next season."

Price still high for Teixeira

In Friday's Red Sox notebook, the Globe's Nick Cafardo writes, "According to a baseball official, the Red Sox are discussing several deals, mainly for hitters, but the price tag for the Rangers' switch-hitting first baseman, Mark Teixeira, is still prohibitive. The Rangers are looking for a combination of Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, and a third player. The Sox have offered the Rangers a few packages, but they've been rejected." In Friday's edition of the Dallas Morning News, Evan Grant writes, "The Rangers continue to sift through trade offers for first baseman Mark Teixeira, but Thursday passed with no significant movement. The Los Angeles Angels, one of three teams in the mix for Teixeira, were the most recent to tweak their offer. The Angels had originally offered first baseman Casey Kotchman and a choice of outfield prospects Nathan Haynes or Terry Evans. It is believed Los Angeles has now added a pitcher to the mix, but the level of pitcher could vary widely from a young prospect with a high ceiling (20-year-old right-hander Nick Adenhart) to an experienced but struggling major leaguer (recently demoted Ervin Santana) to a prospect on the verge of pitching in the majors (lefty Joe Saunders). The Braves and Rangers have talked about a deal that would focus on first baseman/catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and also include a minor league pitcher (lefty Matt Harrison) and minor league infielder (Elvis Andrus). The Rangers have also talked seriously with the Dodgers about a deal for Teixeira and either Joaquin Benoit or Eric Gagne." In Thursday's editions, The New York Post's Joel Sherman writes, "A person familiar with the Rangers' thinking said, "The Yanks have zero shot at Teixeira," because Cashman has taken the organization's main pitching prospects - notably Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy - out of play. The Yanks privately had hoped that enough bad blood had formed between Teixeira and the Rangers that Texas would be motivated to move the switch-hitter even for a lesser package. However, the person familiar with the Rangers' thinking said there is "no chance [the Rangers] settle for a lesser deal," adding the club would retain Teixeira into his walk-year next season rather than accept an inferior package. But this source insists the Rangers "already have multiple offers good enough to accept." The Angels and Braves are viewed as the front-runners. An AL executive, though, saw another possibility, saying "I wouldn't be surprised if Boston got him and just said, 'We are going for it.' I think Teixeira would move the Red Sox to a super-team level. They instantly become the big favorites to win it all if they got him."

Will Boston be able to deal for Dye?

In Friday's Red Sox notebook, the Globe's Nick Cafardo writes, "There's the possibility of a deal with the White Sox for Jermaine Dye, but the White Sox are asking for a package too rich for Boston's blood." ... The Providence Journal has published a report that says the Red Sox won't be able to get Jermaine Dye from the White Sox at an acceptable price. The article states that "according to sources, Dye has told the White Sox that he does not want to go somewhere where he won’t be in the everyday lineup. Dye is a free agent at the end of this season and doesn’t want to diminish his value further by playing irregularly. The Sox had envisioned Dye as someone who could play right field against lefties, spell Manny Ramirez in left and come off the bench as a late-inning power weapon. But that role wouldn’t suit Dye. Dye does not have a no-trade clause, but owner Jerry Reinsdorf and general manager Kenny Williams won’t send Dye somewhere against his will, removing Boston as a potential landing spot."

Sox interested in Dotel?

In Friday's Red Sox notebook, the Globe's Nick Cafardo writes, "The Sox have also been looking at a reliever and the Royals' Octavio Dotel appears to be a target. Kansas City had a scout in Cleveland last night." In Thursday's Red Sox notebook, the Boston Herald's Jeff Horrigan writes, "With the Red Sox and Cleveland interested in Kansas City reliever Octavio Dotel and outfielder Reggie Sanders, it was no surprise that Royals assistant GM Muzzy Jackson was on hand last night." ... Last year, Octavio Dotel posted a 10.80 ERA for the New York Yankees, but they're apparently enamored enough with him to look into prying him away from the Kansas City Royals. Tyler Kepner of the New York Times reports that "Dotel, who was recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery when he pitched for the Yankees, has 10 saves and a 3.15 E.R.A. with 24 strikeouts in 20 innings for the last-place Royals. The problem with Dotel, as with most players in a slow trade market, is the high asking price. The Yankees will probably wait until closer to the July 31 deadline to make a move, believing that prices will fall."

"One industry source said the Red Sox are one of the most active teams as the deadline approaches, but will not surrender their top prospects in packages to obtain (Mark) Teixeria or Adam Dunn from the Reds." ...
 Give me a break.

I definitely see the possibility of them moving Pena to the Pirates for Marte...other than that :meh:
Marte would be a nice addition
Pirates left-handed specialist Damaso Marte has retired 27 straight left-handed batters and has a 0.00 ERA in eight games during July.

Schilling looking strong at AAA

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Perfect. Well, just about perfect. That's the easiest way to describe Curt Schilling's rehab outing for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday night.

Schilling gave up just two hits over five innings to the Toledo Mud Hens, an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, in his second rehab start while recovering from shoulder tendinitis.

"Felt stronger as the game went on," Schilling said. "Felt really strong in the fifth, so a lot of good things happened today."

The Mud Hens went on the win the game, 3-2, in 10 innings, though most of the capacity crowd of 10,300 at Fifth Third Field were long gone after catching a glimpse of the six-time All-Star. Schilling didn't disappoint, retiring the first 14 batters in order, eight of them on strikeouts. He needed just 50 pitches to get through the first four innings as his fastball topped out at 93 mph.

Most of his strikeouts came from his splitter, as he baffled a Mud Hens lineup that featured six players who have spent time in the Majors.

Seven of the strikeouts were swinging, including a three-pitch K of Chris Shelton, the Tigers' Opening Day starter at first base last season.

"Most important, I feel strong," Schilling said. "My split feels as good as it's ever been, and to have the velocity just makes it even better. Everything's been good so far."

The first hit off Schilling came on his 61st pitch of the night. Brent Clevlen hit a double to deep center field on one of the lone mistakes that Schilling made. Clevlen, who played in 31 games with the Tigers last season, said that he was just trying to put the ball in play but happened to get a split-finger that was left up in the strike zone.

"I haven't seen one [like that]," Clevlen said. "You rarely see split-fingers down here."

David Espinosa followed with a infield single that bounced off Schilling's glove to second baseman Bobby Scales. Espinosa was safe at first and Clevlen was thrown out at home as he tried to score from second base on the play.

So that ended Schilling's night after 66 pitches, 44 of them for strikes. The only semi-negative result of Schilling's dominance: He threw just six pitches from the stretch.

Boston manager Terry Francona said on Thursday that Schilling, who has been on the disabled list since June 19 with shoulder tendinitis, will make another rehab start on Tuesday at Columbus.

"I knew that," Schilling said. "So no big deal."

It will likely be the final rehab start for Schilling, who has struck out 14 and allowed just four hits over eight scoreless innings in his two rehab starts with Pawtucket.

"I'm anxious to finish this," he said. "I'm anxious to finish strong and get back to help."

For my Birthday on August 9th I would like the comfort of knowing that, ouside the yankees series, boston's schedule only has them playing ONE series (4 games) against a team with a winning record for the rest of the year... including zero non-yankees games against +500 clubs for the last month and a half of the season.

Could I get that for my birthday? Please?

I CAN?!

Thank you baby Jeebus!

Big win last night after Little Pabi gave it up in the 9th. Good to see Snyder pitch two solid innings. I have more faith in him than I do Tavarez.

Dye will get a lot of PT as Ortiz will get a bit of time off. Dye would platoon with Drew a bit, but also allow Manny / Ortiz time off

Daryl (Foxboro,MA): Any word on the Red Sox talks about Jermaine Dye. Even if that gets done will they be targeting a reliever other than Gagne before tuesday?

SportsNation Buster Olney: Daryl: Globe is reporting that Dye to the Red Sox has a chance, for Wily Mo Pena and a pitcher. Red Sox folks thought at 10:45 that this still had a chance of getting done; it was really up to Jermaine Dye, who controlled this process with a no-trade clause and was somewhat reluctant because of the fact that he wasn't assured playing time.

How often do you think they will sit Ortiz vs RHP pitching and play Dye? Not sure that's going too happen all that much while there is a pennant race. They should just make Drew the odd man out here and be done with it. Dye will come if he's assured of playing every day.

they have the benefit of a big enough lead to rest guys, which I imagine they will do. Plus there are some rumblings about Ortiz's health...
