Dolphins signed kicker Jason Sanders to a five-year contract extension worth $22 million. 

Fantasy football's No. 2 kicker in 2020 is cashing in on a profoundly efficient season in which he made 36 of 39 field goal attempts, banging through all 36 of his extra point tries. He established himself as one of the league's big-footed kickers by nailing eight of nine kickers over 50 yards. Sanders' extension includes a $10 million guarantee. His 2020 numbers stand in stark contrast to his 2019 stats, which include seven missed field goals on 30 attempts. Only the Cowboys and Falcons attempted more field goals than Miami in 2020, giving Sanders the opportunity necessary to become a waiver wire darling in fantasy. Sanders will probably be one of the most over-drafted kickers in fantasy football next season.

STEPHEN GOSTKOWSKI K, TENNESSEE TITANS

Asked about the kicker position on Tuesday, Titans coach Mike Vrabel said "we have to make more kicks."

Fact check: true. Veteran Stephen Gostkowski was a complete disaster in 2020, converting just 69.2 percent of his field goal attempts. That's a number that would have gotten basically any other kicker cut. Now 37, Gostkowski is headed to free agency. Vrabel has said he "needs to talk" to Gostkowski, but we would assume the Titans will be going in a different direction.

Saints restructured K Wil Lutz's contract.

Death, taxes, and the Saints maneuvering themselves under the cap. Lutz, who has three years remaining on his current deal, had a majority of his base salary converted into a signing bonus in order to save $1.74 million against the cap this year. New Orleans is still (unsurprisingly) well over the projected 2021 salary cap and have several more moves to make to reach that threshold.

Cardinals released K Zane Gonzalez.

It's a procedural move since Gonzalez, whose contract expires in the new league year, finished the season on injured reserve. There's still a terrific chance the Cardinals bring him back in free agency. Gonzalez, 25, was surprisingly tendered at the second-round level just last year and is likely valued in Arizona significantly more than any other destination. He most recently sunk 16-of-22 field goal attempts across 12 appearances in 2020.

Vikings released K Dan Bailey. 

This was telegraphed when the Vikings signed Greg Joseph a month ago. Bailey had a disastrous, shank-filled 2020 where he converted just 15-of-22 field goal attempts. That is not going to cut it in modern football. One of the best kickers in the league his first six years in Dallas, Bailey has been highly inconsistent since 2017. His big leg and experience will earn him plenty of free agent workouts, but his days of being a set-and-forget option, both in real life and fantasy, appear to be over.

Falcons re-signed K Younghoe Koo to a one-year contract. 

Koo was an exclusive rights free agent, so this was the only game in town for him. After flopping with the Chargers in 2017, Koo has emerged as one of the league's best, most creative kickers over the past two seasons. He drains field goals at nearly a 90 percent rate, is awesome from beyond 50 yards, and actually converts the occasional onside kick. He will be a candidate for a multi-year pact soon.

Bears signed K Cairo Santos to a five-year, $16 million contract. 

As Over The Cap pointed out on Twitter, 29-year-old Santos has been cut five times since 2018. To say it's an aggressive move would be putting it mildly. The Bears were simply overjoyed by Santos' competent 2020 after years in the kicker wilderness. Santos converted 93.8 percent of his 2020 field goal tries, boosting his career mark to 83.1. Santos is not called on very often from 50-plus yards, making him an extra unlikely recipient of this kind of contract. There's a chance this deal could quickly become an albatross.

I'm good with it. He earned it. The Bears have struggled at Kicker since Gould left.  Even cost them at least one playoff win. Teams don't realize how valuable a reliable Kicker is until they don't have one.  If Gould had missed that kick in 07 against the Seahawks, the Bears might have never made it to the Super Bowl that year.

Washington re-signed Dustin Hopkins.

Hopkins was set for free agency after playing out a three-year, $6.88 million deal signed in 2018. He'll be brought back despite a down year where he converted 13-of-17 field goals and 30-of-32 extra points. Hopkins has been an 84 percent kicker in six seasons for Washington.

Raiders extended an original-round tender to restricted free agent K Daniel Carlson. 

The Raiders will have right to first refusal, but other teams can now bid for Carlson's services a year after he set the Raiders franchise record with 144 points. The Mike Zimmer castoff was a stunningly consistent waiver wire pickup in 2020 fantasy leagues, finishing the year as the game's third highest scoring kicker with a hefty 2.2 field goal attempts per game -- the sixth highest mark in the NFL.

Chargers re-signed K Mike Badgley to a one-year contract. 

Although he survived all 16 games, Badgley was far from great last season, converting just 24-of-33 field goal attempts. He was 8-of-13 between 40 and 49 yards. That's hard to do when you play half your games in a dome. The Chargers also have Tristan Vizcaino on the roster. Badgley could eventually face competition from another veteran.

Cardinals signed K Matt Prater, formerly of the Lions, to a two-year contract.

This will be Prater's 37-year-old season. He's a career 83.2% kicker on field goals but is coming off a down 2020 with Detroit, making just 21-of-28 (75%) kicks. Prater has always kicked in favorable environments, going from Mile High to domed Ford Field and now the dome in Arizona. In the Cardinals' offense, Prater should remain very fantasy-relevant.

Bucs re-signed K Ryan Succop to a three-year, $12 million contract.

After an injury-ruined 2019 in Tennessee, Succop landed in Tampa Bay and went on to have a career year, drilling a career-best 90.3% of his field goals and 52-of-57 extra points. Succop will turn 35 later this year and will kick for one of the league's best offenses.

Lions signed K Randy Bullock, formerly of the Bengals. 

A former journeyman, Bullock settled in as the Bengals' starter over the past four seasons. Headed into his age-32 campaign, Bullock's field goal conversion percentage dipped to 80.8 last season, but he was better his first three years in Cincinnati. That number should come back up as he leaves the rugged AFC North for domed Detroit. Bullock doesn't have a huge leg by 2021 standards, but he nails a few 50-plus yarders every season. His fantasy viability will be close to nonexistent in Detroit's rebuilding offense.

Patriots re-signed K Nick Folk to a one-year, $1.225 million contract. 

The $1.225 million is guaranteed. More is available through incentives. Folk was great as a 16-game starter last season, converting 92.9 percent of his 28 field goal tries. He was 2-of-3 beyond 50 yards, missing only one kick inside the 50. Going on 37, Folk could still end up facing competition from a younger player, but he should be out there for Week 1.

Browns re-signed K Cody Parkey to a one-year contract. 

Parkey gets another year with the Browns after making 19 of his 22 field goal tries and 43 of 47 extra point attempts in 2020. He was hardly usable in fantasy leagues, finishing the season as the 23rd highest scoring kicker. Cleveland had the fourth fewest field goal tries in 2020. Unless that changes, Parkey will remain waiver wire fodder in 2021.

Patriots re-signed K Nick Folk to a one-year, $1.2 million contract. 

Folk in 2020 scored the 18th most fantasy points among kickers despite the Patriots attempting the eighth most field goals. The veteran has made 40 of his 45 field goal tries in two seasons with the Pats. The curiously tattooed kicker Justin Rohrwasser remains on the New England roster.

Raiders re-signed K Daniel Carlson to a one-year, $3.384 million contract. 

This is Carlson officially signing his second round restricted free agent tender. Carlson converted 94.3 percent of his 2020 field goal attempts after he was a far worse 73.1 percent in 2019. Carlson was 4-of-4 beyond 50 yards last season. Coach Jon Gruden evidently believes the 26-year-old is his "kicker of the future."

Bengals selected Florida K Evan McPherson with the No. 149 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

McPherson is the first kicker off the board, early in the fifth round. A former blue-chip kicking recruit from the 2018 prep class, McPherson (5’11/185) set state records with a 60-yard field goal and 84-yard punt in high school. As a freshman he produced immediately, converting 90 percent of his kicks with a long of 48 yards. He remained remarkably consistent in 2019, making the same amount of kicks (17-of-19) as he did the year prior while 51 of his 80 kickoffs ended up in the end zone. In 2020, his conversion rate dipped to 77.3 percent, but he did make four attempts of 50 or more yards while his kickoff touchback rate dropped to 50 percent. Though his production wasn’t up to his usual standards in 2020, McPherson’s talent is evident in his career 85 percent conversion rate. McPherson should be viewed as the favorite to win the Bengals' kicker gig over Austin Seibert.

Vikings signed Memphis K Riley Patterson.

Patterson (5’10/181) was a three-star prospect that was rated as the 16th best kicker from the 2017 prep class. The Edwardsville, IL native struggled a bit as a freshman, converting 69 percent of his field goals while registering only two touchbacks on 24 kickoffs. However, Patterson showed consistent year-over-year improvement throughout his career, boosting his conversion rate to 75 percent in 2018 and 92 percent in 2019. In addition to his on-point accuracy, Patterson converted five-of-six attempts of 50 or more yards two seasons ago. His production slipped a bit in 2020, making 15-of-22 attempts, but five of those misses came from beyond the 50-yard threshold, so that should be accounted for. Though he doesn’t possess the most imposing leg in the class, his touchback rate was decent, as 38-of-63 kickoffs were not returned. He will need to iron out his conversion rate if he is going to stick around at the NFL level. The Vikings only have one other kicker rostered, third-year boot Greg Joseph, who has just 20 career field goal attempts. Expect a true kicking completion to take place between Joseph and Patterson if the Vikings don't bring in anyone else.

Buccaneers signed Miami K Jose Borregales.

Borregales (5’10/206) originally enrolled at Florida International and showed out well, making 83 percent of his field goals and all of his extra points as a freshman. He extended his range in 2018 with a long field goal of 53-yards while going 14-of-18 and being named a Lou Groza Award finalist. He boomed three kicks of over 50-yards as a junior while improving his kickoff numbers by recording 33 touchbacks on 56 opportunities. The Miami native then transferred to his hometown university where he won the Groza Award and received first-team AP All-American accolades. He continued to show improvement on kickoffs (51 touchbacks on 72 kicks) while converting 91 percent of his field goal chances. Unfortunately, the “Aurora” Borregales is unlikely to make the Bucs' final roster as Ryan Succop signed a three-year extension with the team in March.

The Colts worked out K Eddy Pineiro. 

It's a curious move after K Rodrigo Blankenship made 32 of his 37 field goal attempts and 43 of his 45 extra point tries in 2020. Only four kickers made more field goals than Blankenship during his rookie campaign, in which he scored the sixth most fantasy points among kickers. Colts general manager Chris Ballard is apparently deadly serious about bringing in competition at ever position this spring and summer. Pineiro made 82.1 percent of his field goal tries in 2019 for Chicago.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said rookie K Chris Naggar will compete with veteran K Sam Ficken for the team's starting job. 

The team's kicker competition will be between the incumbent Ficken and the newcomer Naggar after New York released K Chase McLaughlin on Friday. The Jets signed Naggar as an undrafted free agent. At SMU in 2020, Naggar made 17 of 21 field goals and 43 of 46 extra points, earning the American Athletic Conference’s Special Teams Player of the year award. The shaky Ficken over the past two seasons with the Jets has made 32 of his 42 field goal tries while missing six extra points. The rejuvenated Jets offense could hold sneaky fantasy upside for whoever gets the Week 1 starting gig. Naggar should be considered the favorite.

The ex-Bears starter Pineiro will provide an experienced offseason leg. Rodrigo Blankenship was one of the best kickers in football last year and should be near impossible to dislodge at the top of the depth chart.

Adam Vinatieri is retiring after 25 years in the NFL. 

He made the announcement on former teammate Pat McAfee's show. The decision was sadly made for Vinatieri, who did not want to hang up his cleats following a rough 2019. No one came calling in 2020, however, so the greatest kicker in league history is calling it a day. The kicker of Super Bowl winners and a franchise icon for two different organizations, Vinatieri is a lock to become the fifth kicker enshrined in Canton, joining Morten Andersen, George Blanda, Lou Groza and Jan Stenerud. Only Andersen and Stenerud were pure kickers.

Bullock is a really good person - recent years have really been plagued with missed kicks in clutch moments*

*-except for when he saved his job by making EVERY. SINGLE. KICK. in preseason and that led to Marvin putting Jake Elliot - WHO WE DRAFTED - onto the practice squad only to have Philly sign him and win a Super Bowl with them.  (not mad....why do you ask?.... )

Anyway - the other thing with Bullock was that Marvin never ever ever looked to him for 50+ yards.  Ever.  Didn't even try.  Maybe a different coach does differently and maybe playing indoors on turf instead of outdoors on grass makes a big difference.

Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo is competing for the team's starting job with Aldrick Rosas. 

Jacksonville special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen confirmed the red-hot kicker competition during minicamp. Lambo's lingering hip injury limited him to four games in 2020 and left the team scrambling for viable kicker options. Jacksonville's cast of kickers hit 18 of their 25 field goal attempts (72 percent), the third lowest rate in the NFL. They were the third worst in extra point conversions too. The most accurate kicker in Jags history, Lambo will have to outplay Rosas this summer if he's to keep his gig in 2021. Rosas -- the seventh highest scoring kicker in 2018 as a member of the Giants -- made eight of 11 attempts last year for Jacksonville. Whoever wins the team's kicker job will have some streaming appeal this season.

Summary of kicker updates over the past 2ish months in bold. Tried to include everyone who got guaranteed $, all UDFAs, and the other most relevant news.

Biggest surprise is the Colts giving so much guaranteed money to Eddy Pineiro when they already have Blankenship, and they're also talking about it as a genuine competition. Seems to me like a legit risk to Blankenship's job and not just cheap talk.

The other big surprise is Tennessee only bringing in a low-end UDFA. I think "the field" (i.e. someone not on the roster yet) is still the favorite there over Haubeil & McCann.

Other big changes: McPherson now the favorite for Cincy, Slye's job now safer, Parkey & Lambo now look more at-risk.

The Rams' seventh-round pick last year, Sloman was released after seven inefficient games only to land with the Titans and kick the game-winning field goal in its victory to clinch the AFC South title. Santos is being ranked somewhere in the low to mid twenties range. Why? He finished as the #9 kicker in my league last year and I think the Bears will have a better offense than last year. Thoughts?

I don’t think kicker rankings are ever that great. Especially dynasty rankings. I know it’s not a priority for many people but finding a good one free or cheap early on is a nice way to boost your team.

I don’t think kicker rankings are ever that great. Especially dynasty rankings. I know it’s not a priority for many people but finding a good one free or cheap early on is a nice way to boost your team. 

Yeah but it’s never the guy I think it’s going to be. Butter is great IRL, lousy for FF. Koo was great; nobody drafted him. I picked up Lutz off the preseason WW his rookie or second year, he was amazing. Until he wasn’t.

FGA allowed is a big indicator for streaming in the last 2/3rds of the season, once we have data. Year over year it varies too much so I’m always guessing early on. People will try to make up narratives like “you want a K on an offense that moves the ball but then breaks down in the RZ”, which sounds good but it’s complete bull crap bc we don’t know who is going to struggle in the RZ. Lot of variance in that from one year to the next.

Last few years I’ve been streaming by using the weekly Kicker thread on Reddit. The guys pretty good, crunches a lot of data and has fairly accurate weekly matchup ratings in a color coded chart. But most sites are freaking worthless, it’s Tucker/Butker/Lutz/Succop as K1-4 every single week.
