* As I noted above, I also found the embellishments unnecessary. That said, I still enjoyed the movie. Maybe by embellishing the story and a movie getting made, his story came to the attention of many orders of magnitude more people than if a movie hadn't been made? Anybody who wants to can check out the actual history if interested, watching the movie not only doesn't preclude that, but could lead to piquing the interest of some that otherwise wouldn't have ever even heard of him.

Just what did happen sounds remarkable and bordering on the miraculous that he survived. Taking issue with it, might be analogous to if someone who jumped off a 10 story building and improbably survived, and a movie made about it changed it to 20 stories. If some one said, "Oh, come on, it was "only" a 10 story fall!", that doesn't really change the fact that it is incredible he survived, either way.
