The Rise and Fall of ESPN (1 Viewer)

RSN's are definitely part of deal to Disney.  Fox is keeping the O& Os.
Yeah, this deal literally makes me sick to my stomach - especially because the Royals have their games on Fox Sport Midwest. Their contract is up for renewal in 2019, and there will be NO competition for their TV rights.

Disney just effectively bought off all the competition. I fear for small market teams going forward.

Inflation of local TV contracts has been fueling MLB revenues for all clubs, not just the small markets.  Less RSN competition should theoretically result in lower rights fees, unless some new media companies enter the fray.

I don't think this move necessarily hurts small market franchises more than big ones.  It's not like there were a ton of bidders in previous cycles.  But I think this is another reaction to the way that viewers consume content.  Broadcast rights for local teams are still attractive properties but the era of massive escalation of rights fees will be coming to an end.   The golden goose isn't dead but it may have just checked into the hospital.

I'm not one to rush in and defend ESPN, but this Adrienne Lawrence chick seems full of ####!

I mean, looking at those conversations, they were clearly friends - I don't even think that is up for debate... Did the guy want to smash that? Probably, but I don't see anything out of line there or him crossing any of those lines. Dollface, fine whatever, but she doesn't seem to mind in her responses.

#Longlegs - this ##### is complaining about that... Now that I've seen it in the context it was used, I can't think of a better scenario where that phrase is used.

"You can use my office if you need to make a call" Seems like a kind gesture from Buccigross

"Okay, I promise to not adjust your chair " They've prob had some sort of discussion about chair adjusting in the past

"#longlegs"

Well ####### duh, long legs would be a reason to adjust the chair.

While harassment is rampant, it is the boy that cried wolf that makes it harder for those who have actually been harassed. She better have something much more significant if she wants anyone to buy this bull####.
I mean, if I had received the texts that he did, I would have assumed she was trying to smash. It certainly looks like she's trying to instigate something with him. Maybe there's more out there that makes him look worse, but he just seems receptive to her advances. He even smartly plays, "I can cook you dinner" as a test to see if she wants something personal v. business.

It's bull#### like this that's going to result in a backlash that leads to real victims not being believed.

The Boston Globe came out with this story which is ironic because they are starting to get in hot water locally because they allowed a few male staff members  resign after there was credible sexual harassment claims made against them. The word is the culture at the Boston Globe was as toxic as what they claim exists at ESPN.

Just received a CNBC notification that ESPN president John Skipper is resigning to deal with substance addiction issues.

Stunning considering he just signed a new contract.  James Miller (who should know) says that's all it is, but it's certainly strange.

first thing I thought of when I heard the story was that he was getting out ahead of a #metoo situation. If it was strictly a substance abuse issue, why resign? Just take a leave of absence.

Their corporate owner just spent 58 billion on fox.
that says nothing about ESPN's fortunes, much less how Disney corporate feels about them as a division or product. all we can discern from their behavior is continued belt-tightening and cost-cutting are the order of the day.

Disney is espn and espn is disney. Things aren't going that bad for them.

ESPN is losing subscribers due to cord-cutting. This isn't new. The scope of those losses is pretty significant. They've gone from 100 million subscribers to 88 million in 6 years. They lost 1.5 million subscribers in the first half of 2017. Disney's fine but ESPN isn't.

The aren't losing anything by Russillo leaving, he is just awful. Doesn't talk about or have any knowledge about anything other than the NBA, the worst sport in the world. Him & maybe 5 other people inexistence give a rats @@@ about the NBA. And trey wingo in the mornings now, wow he is more than awful. I also think wingo is sleeping with Brady &/or belichek the way he fawns over both of them

We’ll see what happens when they launch this streaming service next year.

No more Russillo show.  I hope they get more people who love to scream hot takes and talk about social issues.
Such a bummer.  I've listened to him since his NBA podcast days, loved him on the radio version of Gameday, and while I haven't loved all of the co-hosts he's had since SVP left, I still listen to the show almost every day.  I have been listening to more and more podcasts the past few months, looks like I've got another 3 hours of daily content to find.  Pretty sure it won't be from ESPN.

It's been a fun last few episodes, especially today.  SVP for two segments today, "Bill from LA" called in to talk about the NBA for an entire segment, and a final segment of Ryen recapping his career in a way only he can.

I hate almost everything about ESPN from the last 4 years, but the Wingo replacement of Greenberg to the morning show has been a huge improvement.  Maybe it's because I haven't grown tired of Wingo's schtick like I had with Greenberg, but it's still not stale and corny (yet).

That sucks , he was the only one I didn’t mind listening too although after Kanell got the boot I haven’t followed much.
I actually unsubscribed until Kanell got the boot.  His schtick (Kanell's) was corny and sophomoric.  Added him back to the list but was ready to take him back out after they were apparently making Cain a co-host.  Good for Ryen leaving.  ESPN saddled him with two ####ty cohosts the past two years.

http://awfulannouncing.com/espn/jemele-hill-will-reportedly-leave-sc6-join-staff-undefeated.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Jemele Hill will leave ESPN’s 6 p.m. SportsCenter to take a staff position at The Undefeated, Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch reported Friday.
What Hill didn't get from all this is that while we all have freedom of speech, there are consequences from what we say. Taking a hard line political stand and alienating a large segment of the target audience is perfectly within her right as an American. But her bosses also have the right to make sure she doesn't do that again. I want my sports to be about sports. I want my late night comedians to make me laugh before I crash out. I want none of this to involve politics. I get bombarded with enough of that crap from both sides that when I want to get away from it, I turn to sports and comedy, both of which are tainted with the stench of political wrangling.

Shocking that this didn't work out. SHOCKING.

Quitting before she gets fired was pretty smart though
I don't think she quit. She was reassigned from on air talent to reporter, which is a gigantic demotion. I hope it was worth it. She took a stand and caused a stir among her fans on twitter. In the grand scheme of things, that amounts to nothing. Within a few weeks it was forgotten by pretty much everyone until a story like this comes up. The demotion on the other hand is a huge deal.

Reminds me of the guy that blows past you on the road and you pull up right behind him at the next light. And then a few hundred feet down the road, the police pull him over for speeding. Whipping around the slower driver only to beat the guy to the next light by one car length amounts to nothing. The speeding ticket is going to cost money.

Deitsch reported she asked for the switch. She clearly wants to be more politically engaged which that website will allow her to do.

Some of this is part of the YOU WILL BE MADE TO CARE attitude that seems to pervade ESPN (among others). Most people don't want bothered with that stuff; look at the award shows - their ratings are steadily dropping the more these media elites pontificate/lecture us, the great unwashed. If people get sick enough of it, they'll change the channel.

Hill is free to write her race-baiting articles to her heart's content now. If that's what she wants, more power to her.

From deitsch again:

People I trust at ESPN, people who have dealt me straight for years, tell me Jemele Hill asked for the switch. You’ll no doubt hear otherwise. Up to readers to believe who they trust.

The official story is that she asked to be reassigned. Whether that's true or not, who really knows?

Jim Miller said on Deitsch’s pod awhile back that she wouldn’t last the year on SC. It could be true that she asked for the switch, but did so at least in some part because she saw the writing on the wall.

Possibly the worst SC anchor ever, quite the feat. She was my final straw for all things ESPN related (although Skip/SAS helped get me near the edge)... I won't be tuning back in, they made their bed, they can now lie in it as subscriptions continue to fall.

*Excluding PTI, but once Mike/Tony are gone, I'm officially done with ESPN for good, #### that network.

Weeellll....except for live sports, right?  CFB, CBB, the occassional MNF game?  We're all watching that ish.

I believe that Hill asked for the change.  Let's face it, she knows very little about sports, and has probably always viewed her various gigs at ESPN as a means to an end, that end being to have a voice in the media about race and/or social topics, and now that she has accomplished that to some small extent, it is just a matter of time before she is away from sports altogether and works at CNN or MSNBC someday.  Given how she loves to make everything about race, those companies will absolutely love her.

Her asking for the change is like the person that resigns before they get fired.  Just semantics.   She was terrible on SC and everyone knew it including her.
