The Tea Party is back in business! (1 Viewer)

Check out the comments on the ABC site I linked. If they're any indication, Tea Partiers are freaking out. They're calling Boehner a traitor, a coward, etc. They truly wanted the GOP not to do this.
Haven't we learned yet that a few wackos posting on the internet aren't indicative of a group as a whole? Why do you continue this bull####?
Because in the past several days the Tea Party voices, on talk radio and elsewhere, have been unified in opposing raising the debt ceiling unilaterally, even for a short period of time. So I am betting the anger at Boehner is pretty representative. I could be wrong; we'll see.
Those few are your typical idiots.

If our Tea Party policy makers were smart they'd accept this short term delay and then lay out a debt ceiling raise plan that essentially schedules times and amounts for debt ceiling raises - a a schedule that plans for a decreasing deficit. Even those lawmakers understand the consequences of default. But they need to make those steps that alert Democrats that infinite spending is no longer possible.

The strength of the Tea Party, thus far, is that they're idealistic. They don't compromise like normal politicians do. This, and not their funding, is what has attracted them to the Republican base.

True, but time to work on the problem isn't a compromise - it is just a delay. It's what I'd like to see, anyway.

Seriously, some of the folks in Washington are idiots, but many aren't. Cruz (the lightning rod), for all you may dislike him, is brilliant.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/opinion/obamacare-healthcare-gov-website-cost/

The reason for this nationwide headache apparently stems from poorly written code, which buckled under the heavy influx of traffic that its engineers and administrators should have seen coming. But the fact that Healthcare.gov cant do the one job it was built to do isnt the most infuriating part of this debacle its that we, the taxpayers, seem to have forked up more than $634 million of the federal purse to build the digital equivalent of a rock. The exact cost to build Healthcare.gov, according to U.S. government records, appears to have been $634,320,919, which we paid to a company you probably never heard of: CGI Federal. The company originally won the contract back in 2011, but at that time, the cost was expected to run up to $93.7 million still a chunk of change, but nothing near where it ended up. Given the complicated nature of federal contracts, its difficult to make a direct comparison between the cost to develop Healthcare.gov and the amount of money spent building private online businesses. But for the sake of putting the monstrous amount of money into perspective, here are a few figures to chew on: Facebook, which received its first investment in June 2004, operated for a full six years before surpassing the $600 million mark in June 2010. Twitter, created in 2006, managed to get by with only $360.17 million in total funding until a $400 million boost in 2011. Instagram ginned up just $57.5 million in funding before Facebook bought it for (a staggering) $1 billion last year. And LinkedIn and Spotify, meanwhile, have only raised, respectively, $200 million and $288 million.
The $634 million dollar amount is the total amount of government contracts awarded to CGI since 2008. Were they working on Obamacare before it was passed?

Really? So Yoho understands default and not raising the debt ceiling? He said not raising the debt ceiling would bring stability to the markets. Of course, he has since backtracked a bit because I'm sure someone advised him how stupid he was. But that is the point, these tea partiers are people like Yoho who were veterinarians who don't understand yet they have significant amounts of power for freshman congressmen.

Apparently he is pretty bright. But his fellow Republicans have been vocal lately that his intelligence is being deployed for his own future benefit, and not that of his party.

AP Sources: Boehner to Ask House GOP for Short-Term Debt Ceiling Increase. No details yet. Per previous speculation, "short term" means 4-6 weeks.
Great, so we can do this same old s*** in a couple of months
I doubt it. Call me an optimist, but I think this will allow Obama to give some budget concessions that he indicated he'd be open to anyhow. Obamacare is here to stay, but there may be some revisions to that too once the shutdown is lifted.

If this goes through it's a huge political victory for Obama, a face-saving move for the Republican leadership, and a devastating repudiation of the Tea Party. I hope.
I do not share your optimism. It will be the same old crap in 6 weeks, probably worse.

I am pretty disgusted with most of the discussion here. Too many people worried about who is too blame, who looks worse in the polls. All these SOB's need to swallow their pride and do their job. There is nothing hard here....put some framework together for coming to agreement on fiscal issues and sign the resolution. Obama does not have to make a single concession on Obamacare. But he does have to come to the table and talk and stop being such a dickwad. He has to start leading and stop listening to the idiotic partisan hacks.
"I'm disgusted by people talking about whose fault it is. It's Obama's fault and he should fix it."
No, it really comes down to the Senate. Thomas Sowell has written a pretty incisive article on what is going on here. And, as is typical, he does a good job of cutting through the chaff and getting to the point. Simply put - spending starts in the House. The House has funded government. The Senate won't go along. So, as Sowell states, "because it leaves out the money they want to run ObamaCare, that is their right. But that is also their responsibility." Bingo.
That is ridiculous. The House doesn't get to decide the budget without any input.

This. He seems like a very smart person, but he only cares about one thing...Ted Cruz.

I’m being told by several sources that Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor are plotting to give up trying to either defund or delay Obamacare.

This comes at the same time the Obama administration admits it will be months before their Obamacare website will be fixed and Kathleen Sebelius is saying if people want out of the mandate they can pay a fine.

Nonetheless, Cantor, Boehner, and with them Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn are expected to cave in and fully fund, unimpeded, Obamacare.

They will work up a new deal that includes a debt ceiling increase with a few sops to the GOP as cover. The only change they are still considering it the medical device tax repeal, which is being heavily lobbied for by former Boehner and McConnell staffers who left for K Street.

A number of Democrats who are recipients of campaign cash along with these Republicans may provide a crony capitalist bridge over which this one tax repeal can pass while leaving in place all the other taxes, penalties, and fees.

But John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnell, and John Cornyn will ensure that Obamacare is fully funded and give the American public no delay like businesses have.

In doing so, they will sow the seeds of a real third party movement that will fully divide the Republican Party.

To read the news and tweets this just might be the fracture in the GOP that has been a long time coming.
Per Robert Costa, Boehner doesn't have the support he needs in the room. The Republicans are divided. If they don't go for it, then Boehner is left with a very stark choice: either call for a debt ceiling raise anyhow, with Democratic support, or back down (which would in turn destroy any credibility he has remaining.)

How will the institutions, the elctorate, the house and the senate deal with three real parties being represented? And when no party has absolute majority?

Per Costa- Boehner is telling the Republicans that they will keep the government shut down in order to fight over Obamacare but raise the debt ceiling through November 22.

If you think this is rough, tho, con Rs already telling me Boehner's play makes the CR "their thing," won't give in for small concession
Per Costa. Sweet going into Holiday Season w/o pay for 2 months. :(

Back when the shutdown started, Boehner urged the House not to do it- that it would be better to make all of their demands over the debt ceiling raise. Now, apparently he is telling them to raise the debt ceiling and continue to make all of their demands over the shutdown.

I don't believe it. That's all talk. In this instance, I actually agree with the Tea Party types- once they raise the debt ceiling, they'll fall in line over a few token concessions- maybe the device tax...the shutdown will end pretty quickly. (That's my guess.)

If true, Obama has a choice of leaving the Government partially shut down and raising the debt ceiling or letting the default happen. Great

Boehner doesn't survive this. There is simply no way. I think you have to bet there is a new Speaker next term. He has no ability to lead the room, Cantor is the very essence of a face without depth at this point, and the rest of the leadership is either incapable of leading or scared of a minority of the party that does or does not exist in the form they fear. The entire leadership needs to be restructured and it has to be done now so that the voices and faces on TV heading into 2016 aren't so displeasing to the electorate that the party's nominee has too much personal party baggage to get out of his or her own way.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing the party die on live TV. The theatre of the loss of 3 speakers in a rom on live TV was awesome and to watch the party eat itself in the House on an actual real non-CNN station is popcorn worthy.

Obama already offered this yesterday.
Do you have a link for that? I have not seen him offer anything like that

Why non-CNN station?

We could have the huge count down clock with members of the GOP.......

He said open the government AND raise the debt limit.

This latest junk isn't going to fly.

Meant CSPAN. Trying to follow and work today is not working well for some reason.

Speaking of which is there a way to set up your twitter feed to just update itself instead of having to click on the "new tweet" button?

He is the president. He was elected to lead. hth
He is leading. He is setting the terms of the negotiation. You and the repubs might not like the terms, but that hardly matters.

One party having a majority wouldn't be the problem.
Elaborate, please.
The most likely result is that the Tea Party and Republicans split formerly Republican votes in three-way races and hand a large majority to the Democrats.

Regardless -- either the Dems win a majority, or the Tea Party cacuses with the Republicans. It's no different than Bernie Sanders or other true Independents currently.

if I have this right then the latest from Boehner means the House GOP is keeping both hostages -- government shutdown and debt limit -- but has agreed not to shoot the debt limit in the head for another six weeks.
Exactly.

Boehner needs to just fall on his sword for the good of his party and pass both bills with Democratic help. All the Republicans would do with this latest plan is remove the revolver they had pointed at their temple and put a double-barrel shotgun in their mouths.

Yes please, let's have the destruction of the Republicans and the rise of a real opposition party to the bipartisan business as usual.

Oh, and please raise the debt limit to $100 quadrillion on your way out.

The difference would be in primary elections though and incumbent moderate republicans not having to fear being "primaried"
