Because in the past several days the Tea Party voices, on talk radio and elsewhere, have been unified in opposing raising the debt ceiling unilaterally, even for a short period of time. So I am betting the anger at Boehner is pretty representative. I could be wrong; we'll see.

If our Tea Party policy makers were smart they'd accept this short term delay and then lay out a debt ceiling raise plan that essentially schedules times and amounts for debt ceiling raises - a a schedule that plans for a decreasing deficit. Even those lawmakers understand the consequences of default. But they need to make those steps that alert Democrats that infinite spending is no longer possible.

Twitter, created in 2006, managed to get by with only $360.17 million in total funding until a $400 million boost in 2011. Really? So Yoho understands default and not raising the debt ceiling? He said not raising the debt ceiling would bring stability to the markets. Of course, he has since backtracked a bit because I'm sure someone advised him how stupid he was. But that is the point, these tea partiers are people like Yoho who were veterinarians who don't understand yet they have significant amounts of power for freshman congressmen.

I doubt it. Call me an optimist, but I think this will allow Obama to give some budget concessions that he indicated he'd be open to anyhow. Obamacare is here to stay, but there may be some revisions to that too once the shutdown is lifted.

If this goes through it's a huge political victory for Obama, a face-saving move for the Republican leadership, and a devastating repudiation of the Tea Party. I hope.

I am pretty disgusted with most of the discussion here. Too many people worried about who is too blame, who looks worse in the polls. All these SOB's need to swallow their pride and do their job. There is nothing hard here....put some framework together for coming to agreement on fiscal issues and sign the resolution. Obama does not have to make a single concession on Obamacare. But he does have to come to the table and talk and stop being such a dickwad. He has to start leading and stop listening to the idiotic partisan hacks.

No, it really comes down to the Senate. Thomas Sowell has written a pretty incisive article on what is going on here. And, as is typical, he does a good job of cutting through the chaff and getting to the point. Simply put - spending starts in the House. The House has funded government. The Senate won't go along. So, as Sowell states, "because it leaves out the money they want to run ObamaCare, that is their right. But that is also their responsibility." Bingo.

That is ridiculous. The House doesn't get to decide the budget without any input.

Per Robert Costa, Boehner doesn't have the support he needs in the room. The Republicans are divided. If they don't go for it, then Boehner is left with a very stark choice: either call for a debt ceiling raise anyhow, with Democratic support, or back down (which would in turn destroy any credibility he has remaining.)

I don't believe it. That's all talk. In this instance, I actually agree with the Tea Party types- once they raise the debt ceiling, they'll fall in line over a few token concessions- maybe the device tax...the shutdown will end pretty quickly. (That's my guess.)

He has no ability to lead the room, Cantor is the very essence of a face without depth at this point, and the rest of the leadership is either incapable of leading or scared of a minority of the party that does or does not exist in the form they fear. The entire leadership needs to be restructured and it has to be done now so that the voices and faces on TV heading into 2016 aren't so displeasing to the electorate that the party's nominee has too much personal party baggage to get out of his or her own way.

The most likely result is that the Tea Party and Republicans split formerly Republican votes in three-way races and hand a large majority to the Democrats.

Regardless -- either the Dems win a majority, or the Tea Party cacuses with the Republicans. It's no different than Bernie Sanders or other true Independents currently.
