The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the top 100!! (18 Viewers)

For our first pair we will have Japanese movie set in Japan about a movie shoot taken over by zombies, and movie by a New Zealander about the boy in Nazi Germany.

Step Brothers was funny, but I just don’t quite understand the concept. Were they mentally challenged, why were they man childre? Is there anyone in the world that are adults and that helpless/dumb/childish (let alone two who become “brothers”)?

It just seems like a cheap and easy concept that no one cared to even try and explain.
Yeah, it's a comedy. Kind of like how the people in Anchorman were exaggerations of stereotypes or in Billy Madison no school would allow a grown man to just come and spend a few weeks in their elementarys school classes. You just have to go with it. That said, my wife works in HR and I've heard some pretty funny stories. They had a man working there who was in his late 20s. His mom also worked there. When he was going to miss work, she would call him in sick. When he had issues with his medical insurance, she is the one who would call HR and try to talk about it. My wife and coworkers had to repeatedly tell her that her son was a grown adult and he had to be the one handing these conversations. When he got caught sleeping on the job multiple times, he asked if HR could have the meeting with his mom instead of him. They said no. Then he asked if his mom could join in on the meeting. Nope. Then mom called HR to ask again. He wasn't disabled. He was just a man baby who didn't know how to do anything for himself.

They were man babies
To that level? Probably not, but there are many clueless people living with their parents still reading comic books and playing video games all day.
You might be overthinking Step Brothers. ;)
I think....

Nevermind.

That Will Ferrell is an unfunny human being?
When he doesn't have a cowbell, yes.
I don't agree, but I get the impulse. There are actors/people who I feel that way about as well. Ferrell aside, often the movies on my list with him in them also have a ton of other funny people (well, to me) as well. I like John C Reiley more than Ferrel typically, and Adam Scott + Katheryn Hahn are funny in this too. I think similar could be said about Anchorman, Old School, Blades of Glory, whatever - they are mostly big cast movies. Oddly when he is front and center it tends to be odd movies that lean more drama like Stranger than Fiction and Everything Must Go.

Holy ****.
:lmao:

#108: THE HANDMAIDEN - 39PTS

80s' #62 ranked movie
I don't want to say much about this movie because it's about a con artist and there are some major twists and turns. Wikipedia calls it an erotic historical psychological thriller. I would put an emphasis on the erotic. At the basic sense, a conman plots to seduce a Japanese woman and steal her inheritance. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's by Park Chan Wook who made Old Boy. So if you've seen that, you know how messed up this movie is going to be.

JO JO RABBIT - 41PTS

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD - 41PTS

Both of these movies landed at #60 on our lists. I will include the trailer for One Cut, but my recommendation is to go in completely cold if you haven't seen it- AND stick with the movie. It all makes sense in the end and it's purposely low budget.

I'm the wrong guy to ask what makes a good comedy. Why would I like Steve Martin but not Ferrell when they do a lot of the same schtick? Who knows?

And fittingly, I am the opposite of that statement.

Perfect brothers and sisters themed double feature for you here:

#106/#107

LITTLE WOMEN - 40PTSH

Greta Gerwig's adaptation is the best of all the big adaptations. She makes a choice to tell the story out of linear order and instead with 2 dual timelines. This change has fascinating results. The cast speaks for itself Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Chris Cooper, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts. Easily the definitive telling of this story.

Our next pair are two very different movies but with themes of obsession and revenge. We have a movie set in Asia from a UK director and an American set thriller by a Canadian.

Jo Jo is one I am going to grab from the library today and try again. I remember not understanding the love, but I also don't remember it much and could have been in the wrong mood.

It's definitely a polarizing movie. Some people thought it was offensive or at least in bad taste. I think for others it was just too twee.

I can't think of anything that offends me, so I am guessing the bolded was more in line with my reaction.

AMERICAN FICTION - 37PTS (ON BOTH OUR LISTS)
I saw this on a plane also, but in a time period where everyone gets their own screens and choices.

It was so much better than I anticipated even. So funny and clever premise.
Book that it is based on (Erasure) is great too. I love Percival Everett’s stuff.
Fun fact: I took a class from Percival Everett.

James was a great read as well.
I think James made a sort of cameo in American Fiction.

Really good movie.

jo jo was great
Agree and I was surprised by the backlash to it from some. Taika is of Jewish descent. There’s a lineage of this kind of NAZI humor from Mel Brooks to Ernst Lubistch to Chaplin. Yeah it makes NAZis seem kind of harmless and silly but I think we’re mostly educated enough as a society to know the grim reality…but then again maybe less now than ever before but still the movie was funny and moving. I stand by my support of it and stand by Taika as having pulled off quite a feat writing, directing and starring in it.

"When Taika Waititi, who is Maori/Jewish, was asked about why he chose to play the role of Adolf Hitler, he said "The answer's simple, what better '**** you' to the guy?"

PRISONERS - 42PTS

THE RAID: REDEMPTION - 42PTS

Yep, we cross into the 90s tonight.
Might want to start labeling them with their ranking once we hit the 100
You mean be more specific as to where they were on our individual lists?
Ignore what I said lol, I don’t even know what I was looking at
The posts with the ties look silly, but I don't know how to post that.

I was going to snark that last I checked 102 was close to 100. ;)

PRISONERS - 42PTS

I wonder if I should have had this higher. It’s such a standard movie/tv setup but it’s done at the highest level. Kid goes missing. The father doesn’t think the cops are doing a good enough job so he takes on his own unhinged investigation. Another Denis Villeneuve movie with a great cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, Melissa Leo, Terrence Howard, Maria Bello. Shades of the first season of True Detective here.

I don't think so - that was my feeling about it as well. The big reveal wasn't all that big to me and did seem like a pretty standard "Criminal Minds" plot resolution.

one a fairy tale
a fantasy you say!?!
On a very quick scan of your list I see 7 on our countdown. I think Midnight in Paris is the only one so far to show up.
that's a lot more than I thought. I know I have some good ones but I didn't know if that many would make a best od the 21st century. I'm excited to see what is on there.
You won't have to wait long. 2 of them are within the next 5.
