The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (23 Viewers)

apparently they made a 2014 muppets movie too. I'll give it a try at some point. I absolutly adore The Muppet Christmas Carol
Yeah, there was a sequel with Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais. Worth a watch for fans maybe, but I don't love it nearly as much as the other. The Muppet Christmas movie is about the only Christmas movie this scrooge would watch for a long time. My wife also puts on Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas and we all watch that. We will still watch The Great Muppet Caper, Manhattan, and the OG movie every once in awhile too.

There is a 3 way tie in the next one, but I will post our 2 we agreed on first, then I will do my #8 and #7 tonight.

Then tomorrow if we do the usual 8, we will have a cluster of 3 in the morning from both our lists, and the other 5 are some of our favorite movies so I will release those one at a time. We will have my #5, #4, and #2 tomorrow and 80s' #3 and #2.

That means on Friday we will be on to the top 20 for the long weekend and all the rest will be movies on both lists.

I'll be watching K-Pop Demon Hunters, sorry to rain on the Muppet parade.
I am glad I don't know what this is. My daughter keeps asking for us to re-up Netflix so she can watch it though.
:scared:
Word is it's actually good. I can't lie, the songs are nice.

I am more just digging my heels in with my anti-NF stance, much less about the potential quality of the show.

Sound of Metal at #11 was probably the biggest climber of the countdown. I was a little surprised, but remember digging it on first watch and went so far as to look up to see if I talked about it in the movie thread. Yep:

Sound of Metal - LOVED this one. I think I am on my 12th movie of the year or so, and this one shot to the top. Great acting and performances - mainly Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci. Everybody needs a Joe in their lives. There is a pretty big flaw in the plot (IMO), but the rest was so well made and the movie avoided areas with relationships that I think a lesser movie would have fallen for. Can't say enough good things about this one.

The top of my list so far is Sound of Metal, Peanutbutter Falcon, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always.

I also remember krista loving this one (won't @ her to drag her in here ;) ) and she did better with the review:

Watched Sound of Metal tonight primarily based on KP's review - had it on my list but moved it up given the huge praise.

And holy ####, was he right. This movie had me entranced and enraptured from moment one, and sadly made me feel on the verge of tears throughout, too. I think Never Rarely Sometimes Always had the biggest gut-punch of emotion in movies I've seen this year, but this one beats it for the slow burn. That lead actor, as well as the "mentor," are just mesmerizing. Each of them acts with his eyes more than anything else, which is about as good as it can get. This movie is so...human. Just human and beautiful. I hated the deaf community he stayed in at first, thinking it seemed cult-like, but then it all made sense.

Another thing I loved is that there are no good guys and bad guys in this movie. Everyone is flawed but doing their best. Everyone has something hopeful in them but also demons to face. It's just so, again...human.

This is truly a movie that anyone should love.

Anyway, Riz Ahmed delivers one of my favorite acting performances of the 21st century. He is captivating as Ruben as the character struggles with all that comes with the deafness. The supporting cast is also outstanding. Paul Raci as the leader of the community Ruben goes to is great. I rag on tv shows, but one I was really into was Bates Motel and loved Olvia Cooke in that and was glad to see her as well. The sound is outstanding, and deserved that Oscar. Not something I usually pay a lot of attention to, but it really helps put you into Ruben's head. Just knowing that two words are coming at the end has me bracing for a cry. Yes, I still have a small beef about that same plot point, but these are movies ffs.

Amores Perros is the movie that I randomly grabbed at the store as I looked through that collection. I had the dumb bias that subtitles = artsy snoozefests. Instead I was greeted with this movie that had the story of a few sets of people meeting up told in a gritty, uber violent way that I hadn't seen since the 90s. It took me back to that first wave of me getting more into movies. It is definitely not a movie for everybody - I don't get bothered by much, but the dog fighting scenes are really hard to watch. Not a movie that is an everyday rewatch, but I revisited it recently and it was every bit as good as I remembered. I don't click with any other of Inarritu's movies but this one and The Revenant I have in my collection.

#37: THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD - 89PTS

#12 on Ilov80s' list
The best rom-com of the century- a truly modern update to the genre and a star making performance from Renate Reinsve.

#36: THE BRUTALIST

#11 on Ilov80s' list
Classic epic Hollywood film making. It feels very 1970s to me. If you haven't seen The Pianist in awhile, this feels like a spiritual sequel. The Pianist being about an artist surviving the Holocaust and The Brutalist being about an artist coming to America after their Holocaust experience and trying to build a new life. Epic epic epic.
The Brutalist was the 3rd best movie that I saw last year---better than the one that won the Oscar. My 2nd favorite, A Real Pain, was already listed. I hope to see the best film of last year appear later in this countdown.

But I'm just cueing up The Worst Person In the World right now. I've never seen it but I have high expectations.......

I'll do 2 of the ones on both lists that was a tie in points. Then I will do the next 6 one at a time during the day and continue pace over the weekend since there is only 1 tie left after that.

Up next we agree on one of the best sequels of the 21st century, the my solo picks are my votes for best sequel and best horror movie, 80s' solo picks are his 2 highest rated foreign language movies from the same part of the world, and my last solo pick is my favorite from a certain British director people probably thought would have a better showing on this countdown.

God no. I'd almost rather watch Crystal Skull.

Doesn't exist.

#29: SHAUN OF THE DEAD - 94PTS

#7 on KP's list and also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list
I love this movie, but for horror-comedy, The Cabin in the Woods does it better.

This isn't as straight up comedy as Tucker and Dale, but it is more comedy/horror satire than horror-comedy

My main reason for disagreeing with this and rating Shaun higher is IMO it does more things well. I think Shaun makes us care for the characters more and there are some touching scenes with Shaun and family/friends. The 2nd half is a legit zombie movie and has surprisingly good gore and kills. Both are funny with great humor, one has more heart.

Nitpicking between top 5 horror movies for me, but that was my reasoning after recent rewatches.

#27: ANOTHER ROUND - 95PTS

#18 on Ilov80s' list and #89 on KP's list. Also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list.
Movie about middle aged teachers who like to drink? This movie is speaking my language.
I have this on my list to watch maybe I’ll try to fit it in this weekend

These aren’t even in the same league. Those line up more with like Episode 8

I just watched them all recently with my daughter. The Star Wars movies are mostly crap. You got me to agree about Rogue One, but you are on your own with Ep. 3.

I think you're on the wrong side of Ep3.

And curse you for making me side with @Dan Lambskin ! :shakesfist:

Not sure how you are defining wrong. Dan's opinion (or I am pretty sure he has said this recently) is that Ep.3 is the best Star Wars movie. I might be able to agree that Ep3 is the 5th best SW movie, but on recent rewatches my opinion on all the newer movies dropped a lot, so more what I am saying is that rating Ep3 as the 4th best isn't saying that much. I would be happy not watching any of the movies besides the OG trilogy and Rogue One ever again - that was where I landed about the franchise on my recent watch with my daughter.

#26: TOP GUN: MAVERICK - 96PTS

#89 on Ilov80s' list and #17 on KP's list.
Top Gun: Maverick is the 6th best Star Wars movie. A New Hope definitely did the "maneuver down a narrow chasm and bullseye a small target" shtick better.

I could pick a few nits with this list (Empire is the best, A New Hope second, etc., and I'd bump up Rogue One) but this largely has it correct.

Episode 3 at no. 7 might be a little high, but I'll allow it.
Tomatometer, in a word...sucks.
You're agreeing with the guy who thinks Shawshank is overrated, loves American cheese and Chaddyshack II.

All of this is true

It didn't reinvent the wheel. it was a rare sequel that was an improvement, looks fantastic, was funny, and was the best time at the theater i had in a decade.
