The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (14 Viewers)

SNL is an American Institution. Definitely deserves top 10 ranking.

I got to grow up into the 80's, and 90's staying up late with my buddies watching the Church Lady, Matt Foley motivational speaker, Bill Swerski"s superfans (daaaaa Bearsss!), Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy, weekend update with Dennis Miller, Wayne's World.....the list goes on and on...
I'm not sure I've ever laughed as hard as I did when I saw the first Matt Foley sketch. David Spade and Christina Applegate, playing the kids Foley was trying to motivate, couldn't contain themselves either.

Years later I realized another layer of what made it funny -- pretty much every motivational speaker I've ever seen or heard of is doing that gig AFTER they overcame whatever challenges they had. But Foley had overcome nothing, he was still living in a van down by the river.

Chris Farley could kill you with a facial expression. Or hiking up his pants.....best physical comedian of all time. Still miss that guy a lot......I spose his inner demons were part of what made him who he was

Prediction: he has seen more episodes than I have.

SNL was tough to rank. So hit or miss over 50 years. There’s a lot of nostalgia from decades ago but man some of the skits from the 70s both really sucked and some were gold. I think the issue they’ve had over the last decade is the talent and writing isn’t quite as good. There’s still some really funny stuff they hit on so it’s perfect to catch clips of. I hope it stays on the air for a while still.

I think ilov80s nailed it. Judge the top 10% and toss the rest. The 10% is epic.

Already stated, SNL is iconic and an American institution. I've been hearing since the early 80's as a school kid that "it's not as funny as it used to be". And I hear that every year.

Of course it's hit or miss. Just enjoy it. I still watch it religiously.

Not to mention the incredible number of musical acts that have appeared. A number of artists that I like, I owe my first introduction to them to SNL.

I don’t think this is a very great version of the show. But like you say people are always saying it’s not good anymore. There’s been a lot of really great musical performances and skits the last 10 years.

I didn't include SNL because while it has some great moments it has also been really bad for long stretches. I just didn't enjoy it as a whole compared to the other shows I listed.

1990-91 SNL cast.......best SNL cast ever, and best skit comedy cast ever assembled, imo.

Dana Carvey
Phil Hartman
Jan Hooks
Victoria Jackson
Dennis Miller
Mike Myers
Kevin Nealon
Chris Farley
Tim Meadows (first episode: February 9, 1991)
Chris Rock
Julia Sweeney (first episode: November 10, 1990)
A. Whitney Brown (final episode: March 16, 1991)
Al Franken
Adam Sandler (first episode: February 9, 1991)
Rob Schneider (first episode: October 27, 1990)
David Spade (first episode: November, 10, 1990)

SNL is kind of take the top 10%, ditch the rest situation. Lots of bad sketches and bad years but the highs are about the funniest and most culture penetrating things out on TV. As bad as it has been at times, the names of people it’s introduced us to is craaaaaazy

Billy Murray, Chevy Chase, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, John Belushi, Kate McKinnon, Chris Farley. Could go on and on and on. No SNL and we don’t get things like Wayne’s World, Ghostbusters, Austin Powers, Happy Gilmore, 30 Rock, Beverly Hills Cop, Fletch, Anchorman, Animal House and on and on and on there too.
Perfect take. Stunned it ranked this high given the huge amount of misses and way too long of a draught on great material.

But when it was right…..it was belly ache comedic magic.

I'm one of the few who did not rank Cheers. As a child in the 80s there were much more interesting sitcoms to a 6-12 year old like Alf, Small Wonder, etc.
I was of similar age and watched more like ALF/Small Wonder in the 80s as well, but Cheers still top 20 for me. Used to watch the reruns in syndication all of the time in the 90s.

Cheers almost made my list and on another day I might put it in there. There was a time when I'm sure I could have taken on all comers in Cheers trivia.

I started a re-watch of Cheers right as this ranking thread started. I was pleasantly surprised how well it holds up. The writing and chemistry between everyone is phenomenal. It was just as good as I remembered if not better. It definitely solidified as my #2 show upon going through this rewarch.

I figured it would be somewhere between 10-20 but should be top 5 without a doubt.

Norm Peterson's Famous Quotes (from TV's "Cheers")

Coach and Norm
"Can I draw you a beer, Norm?"
"No, I know what they look like. Just pour me one."

"How's a beer sound, Norm?"
"I dunno. I usually finish them before they get a word in."

"What's shaking, Norm?"
"All four cheeks & a couple of chins."

"What's going down, Normie?"
"My butt cheeks on that bar stool."

"What would you say to a nice beer, Normie?"
"Going Down?"

"What'll it be, Normie?"
"Just the usual, Coach. I'll have a froth of beer & a snorkel."

"What would you say to a beer, Normie?"
"Daddy wuvs you."

"What'd you like, Normie?"
"A reason to live. Give me another beer."

Norm and Sam
"What'll you have, Normie?"
"Well, I'm in a gambling mood, Sammy. I'll take a glass of whatever comes out of that tap."
"Looks like beer, Norm."
"Call me Mister Lucky."

"What's new, Norm?"
"Terrorists, Sam. They've taken over my stomach & they're demanding beer."

"How's life treating you?"
"It's not, Sammy, but you can."

"What'd you say, Norm?"
"Any cheap, tawdry thing that will get me a beer."

"What would you say to a beer, Norm?"
"Hiya, sailor. New in town?"

(Coming in from the rain) "Evening, everybody."
Everybody: "Norm!"
"Still pouring, Norm?"
"That's funny, I was about to ask you the same thing."

"Whaddya say, Norm?"
"Well, I never met a beer I didn't drink."

"How's about a beer, Norm?"
"That's that amber sudsy stuff, right? I've heard good things about it!"

"Beer, Norm?"
"Have I gotten that predictable? Good."

"Hey Norm, how's the world been treating you?"
"Like a baby treats a diaper."

"Whatcha up to, Norm?"
"My ideal weight if I were eleven feet tall."

"What's the story, Norm?"
"Boy meets beer. Boy drinks beer. Boy meets another beer."

Woody and Norm
"Would you like a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"No, I'd like a dead cat in a glass."

"What's the story, Mr. Peterson?"
"The Bobbsey twins go to the brewery. Let's cut to the happy ending."

"Hey, Mr. Peterson, there's a cold one waiting for you."
"I know. If she calls, I'm not here."

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson?"
"A flashing sign in my gut that says, 'Insert beer here.'"

"Hey Mr. Peterson, Jack Frost nipping at your nose?"
"Yep. Now let's get Joe Beer nipping at my liver, huh?"

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson?"
"Another layer for the winter Wool."

"How's it going, Mr. Peterson?"
"Poor."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"No, I mean pour."

"Women. Can't live with 'em....pass the beer nuts."

"Pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"Alright, but stop me at one... make that one-thirty."

"How's it going, Mr. Peterson?"
"It's a dog-eat-dog world, Woody, & I'm wearing Milk Bone underwear."

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson?"
"The question is what's going in Mr. Peterson? A beer please, Woody."

"Can I pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"A little early isn't it, Woody?"
"For a beer?"
"No, for stupid questions."

same for me except HULU only carries the first four seasons for some reason - I didn't know that when I started.

It cracked me up just as much as when it was fresh - and I just loved the character development and story-lines - I remember as a kid being so happy when Sam was able to buy the bar back.

SNL did not make my list. Too many dry seasons. Even the good years, episodes had 20 minutes of good sketches and 70 minutes of lame ones. Other sketch comedies had a better hit-miss ratio and didn't overstay their welcome.

Some of the few shows my Dad watched: Cheers, Night Court, and Hill Street Blues.... I think that was a Thursday.

I pop a Cheers episode on every once in a while. It's free on Pluto, though they rotate which 4 seasons are available at any one time. I can throw on any random episode from any random season and it holds up. Classic sitcom, and how they made it all work with one anchor set was great tv-making.

Rebecca: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute, you guys. Let's not jump to any wild conclusions here. Let's just look at the facts. Now, all we really know is that Robin is using my secret password to break into my corporation's confidential files. And from the date on these, it looks like he's been doing it since... Well, since the day after we first slept together. So all I think we can really conclude from this is that... I am too stupid to live!

RIP Kirstie Alley

If you are going to make the joke at least use something realistic like She's the Sheriff or some other 80's stuff you guys like. I haven't really watched SNL since the mid-late 90's but in hindsight just because it dipped in quality doesn't mean I should have excluded it. I should have stuck it in the late 50's/early 60's.

Not to mention the incredible number of musical acts that have appeared. A number of artists that I like, I owe my first introduction to them to SNL.
I used to tape both SNL and the letterman show, sometimes just for the musical acts. Even if the skits weren't funny that night there were still bands to catch.

Cheers almost made my list and on another day I might put it in there. There was a time when I'm sure I could have taken on all comers in Cheers trivia.
What kind of underwear does Norm wear?
Milkbone.

Don't waste my time
Ok. What kind of underwear does Lilith wear?
Are you referring to the French cut underwear she brought back for Frasier that he ended up taking off and forgetting about while wearing a clown costume that let the pants drop

Or the comment Carla made about letting Lilith wear underwear for 10 minutes to freeze them when Lilith was talking about slumber party traditions.

I missed cheers as a kid. It was too new to air on the Saturday morning returns around my WWF wrestling watching and I didn’t watch many new adult shows as their aired at night. Just never was something I saw. A couple years ago my wife and I decided to start it and we generally loved it. The Sam-Diana stuff went on a bit too long and became tiresome but Kirstie coming in gave it a new life. Sadly so did Coach passsing and Woody entering. They did a great job brining in new characters to keep the show pretty fresh.
