The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (8 Viewers)

I think Ted Danson is the greatest sitcom actor ever.

And Julia Louis Dreyfus is the female equivalent.
Whew....that may require a top 20 list or something. Ted Danson as the best sitcom actor EVER?

SNL was tough to rank. So hit or miss over 50 years. There’s a lot of nostalgia from decades ago but man some of the skits from the 70s both really sucked and some were gold. I think the issue they’ve had over the last decade is the talent and writing isn’t quite as good. There’s still some really funny stuff they hit on so it’s perfect to catch clips of. I hope it stays on the air for a while still.
I think ilov80s nailed it. Judge the top 10% and toss the rest. The 10% is epic.
I think this is a weird take, but that is what makes these threads fun.

Norm Peterson's Famous Quotes (from TV's "Cheers")

Coach and Norm
"Can I draw you a beer, Norm?"
"No, I know what they look like. Just pour me one."

"How's a beer sound, Norm?"
"I dunno. I usually finish them before they get a word in."

"What's shaking, Norm?"
"All four cheeks & a couple of chins."

"What's going down, Normie?"
"My butt cheeks on that bar stool."

"What would you say to a nice beer, Normie?"
"Going Down?"

"What'll it be, Normie?"
"Just the usual, Coach. I'll have a froth of beer & a snorkel."

"What would you say to a beer, Normie?"
"Daddy wuvs you."

"What'd you like, Normie?"
"A reason to live. Give me another beer."

Norm and Sam
"What'll you have, Normie?"
"Well, I'm in a gambling mood, Sammy. I'll take a glass of whatever comes out of that tap."
"Looks like beer, Norm."
"Call me Mister Lucky."

"What's new, Norm?"
"Terrorists, Sam. They've taken over my stomach & they're demanding beer."

"How's life treating you?"
"It's not, Sammy, but you can."

"What'd you say, Norm?"
"Any cheap, tawdry thing that will get me a beer."

"What would you say to a beer, Norm?"
"Hiya, sailor. New in town?"

(Coming in from the rain) "Evening, everybody."
Everybody: "Norm!"
"Still pouring, Norm?"
"That's funny, I was about to ask you the same thing."

"Whaddya say, Norm?"
"Well, I never met a beer I didn't drink."

"How's about a beer, Norm?"
"That's that amber sudsy stuff, right? I've heard good things about it!"

"Beer, Norm?"
"Have I gotten that predictable? Good."

"Hey Norm, how's the world been treating you?"
"Like a baby treats a diaper."

"Whatcha up to, Norm?"
"My ideal weight if I were eleven feet tall."

"What's the story, Norm?"
"Boy meets beer. Boy drinks beer. Boy meets another beer."

Woody and Norm
"Would you like a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"No, I'd like a dead cat in a glass."

"What's the story, Mr. Peterson?"
"The Bobbsey twins go to the brewery. Let's cut to the happy ending."

"Hey, Mr. Peterson, there's a cold one waiting for you."
"I know. If she calls, I'm not here."

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson?"
"A flashing sign in my gut that says, 'Insert beer here.'"

"Hey Mr. Peterson, Jack Frost nipping at your nose?"
"Yep. Now let's get Joe Beer nipping at my liver, huh?"

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson?"
"Another layer for the winter Wool."

"How's it going, Mr. Peterson?"
"Poor."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"No, I mean pour."

"Women. Can't live with 'em....pass the beer nuts."

"Pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"Alright, but stop me at one... make that one-thirty."

"How's it going, Mr. Peterson?"
"It's a dog-eat-dog world, Woody, & I'm wearing Milk Bone underwear."

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson?"
"The question is what's going in Mr. Peterson? A beer please, Woody."

"Can I pour you a beer, Mr. Peterson?"
"A little early isn't it, Woody?"
"For a beer?"
"No, for stupid questions."
Gotta love boomer humor

10% of a show that's been on 50 years is probably more content than 98% of the shows on this list.

I'm not denying he has a great career. However, CSI isn't exactly a sitcom.

Cheers would have been in my top 3 for sure. It has a nostalgia to me for sure, as I used to beg my parents to let me watch the first scene before the commercial to get the first joke and theme song in as the show started after my bed time.
A few years back I received a present of a few prints of the old time pictures they used to show during the theme song.
And a few years back, my youngest child was going through some personal problems and would not be able to sleep most nights. We fired up Cheers on the peacock app and watched every episode from 1- end (not at once mind you, a few per night before we eventually fell asleep). He liked the show a lot as well and we would often reference jokes about it the next day, so the humor still holds through.
Good memories for me and a good show without having to be over the top obscene.

I think it dropped off quite a bit after Shelley Long left -- I never warmed to Kristie Alley. But when it was at its peak, it was amazing. And it was one of those shows where the characters were so well-written that you grew to care about them -- they weren't just vehicles for jokes and comic scenarios.

My uncle was a regular at The Bull & Finch Pub (now called Cheers Beacon Hill) in Boston, whose exterior was used in the opening of all Cheers episodes. He was built kind of like George Wendt and people would constantly ask him if he was the inspiration for Norm (he wasn't). Eventually, he had a jar next to him that said "ask me if I'm Norm and donate to the Jimmy Fund" which is a Boston-based charity that benefits the Dana Farber Cancer Center.

A few years ago, a video clue on Jeopardy! showed a shot of the bar at The Bull & Finch Pub. And my uncle was in the picture. So I guess I have a relative who was on Jeopardy!

I'm one of the few who did not rank Cheers. As a child in the 80s there were much more interesting sitcoms to a 6-12 year old like Alf, Small Wonder, etc.
Same. I tried a season a few years ago since i never saw an episode of the show before, and thought it ok enough.

I know. That's why i said he was "also" on CSI. Not counting it as a sitcom but it is a television show.

Yep. I love math. Imagine jamming the best skits into a traditional 3 season television series format? Would be the greatest comedic television production of all time. Imo

Thats a fair point, but it still seems strange to me. That feels like me raking an album a 10/10 that has 2 epic songs and the rest are mostly skippable.

But again, my sense of humor also doesn't line up with the FFA in these adventures more often than not. Most of the times even if i laughed at a skit i still felt like they kept it going too long and it became unfunny. Ive seen 1 full episode, and would mostly tine in to time it out when a music act i liked performed.

But you could do that with many shows. I have read many comments in this thread that a show went too long so they docked it or the last season was crap or the finale bombed so I didn't rank it.

Part of this is the total quality and SNL has a significant gap in best to worse. There are years that were terrible. That should be factored in.

That's about how it goes - around the first song and/or Weekend Update you can tap out.

Yes, I usually watch the rerun on HULU - and tap out after Weekend Update. This season there haven't been very many musical acts I even care to watch.

Usually the cold opening and Weekend Update are the only things I pay attention to - once in a while a skit works.

It’s just a different type of show than say Ozark or Friends. Friends had 236 episodes at about 22 minutes long. Thats roughly 5200 minutes. SNL has had 939 episodes at about 70 minutes which gives us 65,700 minutes. So if we say every minute of Friends was great and it didn’t have a single wasted minute. It’s still about 1300 minutes less than the best 10% of SNL.

If you sat down and watched every episode of Friends and then watched only the top 10% of SNL, you would spend 22 more hours watching Samburg, Radner, Carvey and company.

Don’t even get me started on Ozarks. It would need another 1000+ episodes to fill the same time as SNL has aired for. They struggled to fill 44 episodes.

Good point. To even further your point, once again I haven't watched it in decades. I was looking back at the cast trying to figure out when I stopped watching. Wil Ferrells last season, 2001, is when I stoped. Been a long time. But. It had a 20 year run for me that was just nice.

I agree with your premise and was what I was referring to when I said it was hard to rank. If SNL came out new today and has the same kind of hit/miss ratio I probably wouldn’t record and watch. But the longevity, fantastic list of comedic actors it introduced us too and the volume of funny skits far outweighs the turds. I have zero problem with it being ranked this high.

SNL is an American Institution. Definitely deserves top 10 ranking.

I got to grow up into the 80's, and 90's staying up late with my buddies watching the Church Lady, Matt Foley motivational speaker, Bill Swerski"s superfans (daaaaa Bearsss!), Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy, weekend update with Dennis Miller, Wayne's World.....the list goes on and on...
I'm not sure I've ever laughed as hard as I did when I saw the first Matt Foley sketch. David Spade and Christina Applegate, playing the kids Foley was trying to motivate, couldn't contain themselves either.

Years later I realized another layer of what made it funny -- pretty much every motivational speaker I've ever seen or heard of is doing that gig AFTER they overcame whatever challenges they had. But Foley had overcome nothing, he was still living in a van down by the river.
Chris Farley could kill you with a facial expression. Or hiking up his pants.....best physical comedian of all time. Still miss that guy a lot......I spose his inner demons were part of what made him who he was
I don't know about all that...

I gave this some thought when I ranked it, and I disagree. It definitely 100% changed the dynamics of the show but in some ways it got better and some worse. The chemistry between Sam and Diane was fantastic but Alley brought some different and edgier to the show. It's one of the few times I can remember such a large change working out. Sounds like it didn't for you, and I remember being skeptical at the time, but they nailed IMO.

On the Danson being the sitcom actor GOAT. Few thoughts:
  • It does seem to be a shock to hear that because he's not necessarily seen as a greatest actor nor a funny guy in general
  • However, the list of shows and his impact is unquestioned
  • More importantly - if not him, then who? I struggle to come up with someone with multiple shows - which I think it a pretty big criterion. The only other person who has legit multiple fantastic sitcoms for me is Devito. And I would maybe argue him #1. I'm probably missing someone, however.
ETA - thought of another - Ed O'Neill. I'd feel pretty good putting those 3 on Mount Rushmore if you say it's not based on just one show/sitcom
