The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (7 Viewers)

Based on past conversations on this board, I thought Freaks and Geeks would have been higher. I guess if it maybe had a couple more seasons, it would have been. The show is just a great collection of talent.

I loved Friday Night Lights. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton were both amazing in that show. In the 1st season, you hated Riggs but then you found yourself pulling for him as the show went on. Texas Forever!
Freaks and Geeks was a miss on my part. I totally forgot that one, and would have had it ranked.

Is Friday Night Lights more a teen drama like 90210 or Melrose Place? Or is it more a "regular" drama just with teens.
It was a drama that had adults and teens in it. They lived in the small town of Dillon, TX. The coach (Kyle Chandler) and his wife (Connie Britton) had significant storylines in the show. Their friend Buddy was in it a lot as well. Teens were a big part of it, because he was a high school football coach, and his wife was a guidance counselor and then a principal. The teens were great actors, and it was a launching pad for some like Zach Gilford, Jesse Plemons, Michael B Jordan, Taylor Kitsch, etc. Whoever the casting director was did a great job at finding young talent. Anyway, I think it was very good series.
Agreed, it was more drama than soap but did have some of each element.

In the last episode where Daniel “finds himself” playing dungeons and dragons with the geeks is so well don. He looks so happy and the geeks are so happy to be with a cool kid.
There were so many underrated moments, like when Mr. Weir was being the father figure Nick didn’t have (while ranking on Neil Peart) and Lindsey saw a different side of her usually crabby dad.

Just an amazing collection of talent.
The one knock was it was only one short season - but even with that it had the perfect ending.
Would have loved just one more season, but right on both counts … one of the greatest collection of talent and still a fantastic ending.

Is Charlie Day as annoying in IASIP as he was in Horrible Bosses?
He ruined that film.

Dude

So awesome. I have forgotten so many great scenes in this show

The Black Mirror talk is intriguing me. Could someone give me a list of a good starter pack of episodes?
The good thing about Black Mirror is you can watch the episodes in any order.
Id start with
San Junipero
USS Callister
Hang the DJ
Be Right Back
Nosedive
Crocodile
Joan is Awful
I've never heard of this show until it was mentioned in here. Based on the enthusiastic talk, I just watched USS Callister. Holy $#!t snacks!

Well, I know 12 of the 50. If I'm right I'll be a little shocked that they (2 shows) made the top 50 and if I'm wrong I'll be shocked that they didn't make the top 300. 28 of my shows didn't even make it and some of the shows I thought were very good were low on this list so it's been pretty wild.
I feel the same. I’m going to have 4 surprises out of my 16 remaining.

Just as a follow up, I should have said this earlier that the Neil Peart spite by Joe Flaherty in that above clip was an inside joke (as Rush fans likely know this).

Several years earlier during their 1984 Grace Under Pressure tour, Rush had fellow Canadian Joe Flaherty use his Count Floyd persona from SCTV to introduce the song "The Weapon". And Neil's idols were, of course, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich.

Everybody is forgetting the :football: here.

Whatever happened to "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose"?

The trials and tribulations of small town Texas football players, their friends, family, and coaching staff.
Once you realize and accept that it's more soap opera than sports show, it's a really enjoyable watch. Good characters, small town drama, with some football thrown in here and there.
Agreed - the football is really the least of it. Very good characters, with a standout performances by Kyle Chandler as Coach Taylor and Zach Gilford as Matt Saracen.
It was basically a show for teenage girls and I'm embarrassed to say I really enjoyed it. Smh. If you can't get behind the struggle Riggins went though we just can't be friends. Ha ha

I actually almost wrote that at the end of my paragraph, but Scoresman wouldn't have known what I was talking about. It reminds me of a time of when my late boyfriend (who loved the show) and I went bowling with some friends. He and I teamed up, and it was his turn to go, and he looked at me in front of everyone and loudly and proudly said, "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose," and he rolled about the worst gutter ball I think I've ever seen. 🎳

Actually Joe Flaherty wasn't Canadian.
He was born in Pittsburgh and started out with Second City in Chicago. He then moved to Toronto to help get the Second City group going there.
The SCTV cast was a mix of Canadians and Americans.

My bad - Canadian adjacent then.

That's horse hockey. The show had a widespread appeal.
Listen here, Colonel Potter....you're both wrong

  • Demographics:
The show resonated well with "upscale young adults" and families, making it an attractive option for advertisers.
'Resonated' is not the same as targeted audience, but every show caters to the best possible results re: bigger audience. No matter what the initial couple of episodes tried to do, the producers immediately went where the bigger viewing audience was. Same goes for most shows. Remember, Happy Days was supposed to be focused on Richie at first, but the producers saw the audience liked Fonzie much more. The rest is Aaaaaeeeee!

Harris was another one of the very underrated characters - on the fringe of all groups but supremely confident

And then there's Coach Fredericks (Biff from Back to the Future):

(Squints from The Sandlot up in the front laughing)

Ha ha. Okay maybe using the phrase "intended for teenage girls" wasn't used appropriately. I should have said something like: I usually am drawn to shows that have sex, drugs and violence and this show was way different then my norm. I really enjoyed whatever it is I watched. Ha ha

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is awesome. I can understand how it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly is mine.
I think the best part about the show is that on any episode, any of the characters can have me laughing so hard I am literally crying. It's not just one that carries the show. Wildcard, bitches.

Shut up bird

Here you go

There were three episodes that got three votes from the people who were kind enough to give me some suggestions: San Junipero, USS Callister, and Hang the DJ.

I decided to watch one while on the treadmill this morning and chose San Junipero because it was the first one I found while scrolling. Yes, this was very, very good.

This show has real potential for me because I like watching a story in these smaller time increments. It's why I go see the Oscar-nominated shorts every year.

I like IASIP, but he and his scientist buddy were the two worst things in Pacific Rim.

Another wonderfully great clip from Freaks and Geeks. I think I need to rewatch

Yup - posted this one earlier this morning. Harris was great. Didn’t even get to some of the Bill stuff.
