Just an incredible sci fi show with parallels to real life post 9/11. If you've never seen it, and are going to watch it, I highly recommend Ron Moore's companion podcast where he does a commentary for each episode while he drinks and smokes. Great inside baseball for how shows are run.
Vermeil you had GG and BSG top 3. You're the betting favourite for best list.

There are few shows that I recorded and watched twice in an evening, discussed with co-workers at lunch the next day, and bought season dvds the day they were released. BSG is one of those shows. The first episode, post miniseries, 33, is one of my favorite episodes of any series and I re-watch it all the time. The intrigue of who was on which side was great. The characters were well developed and several were flawed to the point I believe they were insane. The final season was silly, but I find that to be true of most series.

I believe I had GG at 4, Buffy at 2, and BSG at 3. My number one is still out there!

55 - Star Trek - my rank #7. I realize the sequels are "better" but this is the only one that I will stop and watch if I'm flipping channels. It was so campy and silly, but the characters were great, movies 2 and 4 were perfect, and this one set the stage for all of the sci-fi shows that came after. In retrospect, 7 seems a little high, but whatever, this was a classic that spawned a whole new genre of TV shows.
I don’t believe the original Star Trek was listed yet.
Yep, it was only at #55
Must have missed it somehow.

Never really got into this back in the day (the original that is) for some reason.

Maybe it was because I typecasted Lorne Greene too much as the Alpo dog food guy.
Wow, opposite for me. I loved the original. Starbuck and Apollo were awesome. I can't believe it only lasted one season, but I guess I was the only one watching.
Never saw the reboot. May check it out some time, but not that high on my list. I'm shocked to see this so high however.
I should clarify that I didn’t get into either version. I only remember the Lorne Greene original.

"33" is so good. Maybe the most intense 45 minutes you'll ever watch on a television screen.

There were some ups and downs in this series, but at its peak there were so many moments that are among the best I've ever seen in TV or movies.

Exodus Pt. 2, for example, when the Galactica uses the Adama maneuver to jump into the atmosphere of New Caprica. My roommate and I were watching that episode live when it first aired and the moment that happened we heard other people in our building scream/cheer and received a bunch of texts from friends. It was the biggest OMG moment I can ever remember watching TV.

Has she tried The Pitt yet on Max?
Not yet, but we are due to add Max again soon with a new season of The Last of Us starting up in a few weeks. The Pitt seems to have good reviews. Did you watch it?
Yes. Personally I think it’s the best thing streaming right now
I mentioned it to her. She definitely wants to see it. She said her doctor and nurse coworkers all say it's the most realistic medical show out there.

I didn't submit a ranking and don't watch many shows but it would be interesting to see the years the show originally aired and the age of the voters. Personally I don't have a clue when some of these shows originally aired.

I am enjoying this thread.

BSG is amazing sci-fi. Edward James Olmos is a badass.

A lot of people didnt like the ending. I thought it fit really well and the tie-ins to All Along the Watchtower were just so excellently done.

Did a rewatch recently and it holds up amazingly.
For me - The thing about movies and shows that kind of lose their way plot or execution wise I can forgive as long as they nail the tone/emotion correctly.

The emotional denouement for BSG is spectacular.

Wow. Talk about :nerd:

Battlestar Galactica? Texts and cheering over a fake spaceship jumping and landing? No wonder I die every time I’m on stage with this crowd.

You’re killing me, Dangerfield!
Yeah, I dabble in Sci-Fi or fantasy on occasion but I've never seen a single episode of Battlestar Galactica.

This one surprised me.
I’ve never watched it - not sure why exactly - but I know the people who love it really love it. I’m not that surprised, and in a small sample size like this, it doesn’t take much to tilt the scales.

I’m interested in watching it, even more so now.

To be fair, I don’t think it’s just the small sample size that props up this show. From Wikipedia:

“ The series received critical acclaim at the time and since, including a Peabody Award, the Television Critics Association's Program of the Year Award, a placement inside Time's 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time and 19 Emmy nominations for its writing, directing, costume design, visual effects, sound mixing and sound editing, with three Emmy wins (visual effects and sound editing).[4][5] In 2019, The New York Times placed the show on its list of "The 20 Best TV Dramas Since The Sopranos", a period many critics call a "golden age of television".”

The BSG reboot started out great and deteriorated as it went along, to the point it was laughable for me by the end.

I don't quite get this but there is an explanation for how things ended up in season 4 and it has to do with the writers strike
The 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike did, however, significantly impact the production and writing of Battlestar Galactica's final season:

  1. Production halt: Only the first half of the final season's episodes were completed before the strike caused production to stop3.
  2. Potential early ending: There was a possibility that the show might have ended earlier than planned due to the strike. Ronald D. Moore, the show's creator, had considered using the mid-season finale "Revelations" as a potential series finale if the strike prevented production from restarting1.
  3. Rethinking the ending: The strike actually gave the writers an opportunity to reconsider and revise their plans for the show's conclusion. Ronald D. Moore stated that they rewrote the second half of the season after the strike ended, making changes to improve the story6.
  4. Altered finale structure: The original script for the series finale had a non-linear structure and was much longer, with the initial cut being close to four hours. The strike and subsequent revisions led to a more linear structure in the aired version7.
Much is made about what Starbuck was supposed to be. IMO it's not difficult - she's an angel. Which is not problematic to the story which had a spiritual element running all throughout the story all along.

I love seeing Boardwalk Empire so high, didn’t expect that. I think it’s pretty under appreciated. I thought Micheal Pitt was incredible and stole the show but I guess he was absolutely impossible to deal with as a person hence why he’s not gotten any more work.

Yeah he’s really good, l like him in Funny Games and I know I’ve seen him in some other stuff…Bully for sure

I kind of think of him as a poor mans Leonardo DiCaprio
Or a poor Leonardo DiCaprio if you will.

As a youth I only had the 3 networks and PBS. While I wasn't a big fan of some of their programming back then, PBS did reserve a night of MPFC and Benny Hill back to back. 💰💰

Yes very much a younger Leo type, I’m sure he sort of modeled himself after Leo. He’s got some mental health issues I think thay have gotten worse. Just a little Google I see he’s gotten into some trouble recently including throwing dishes from a roof at people below and it sounds like the police may have taken him to a psych facility based on his demeanor. Too bad because he has a very captivating screen presence.

As for Boardwalk, the one thing I’m sure still not totally sure about is whether Buscemi was a good choice for Nucky. Michael Shannon was incredible. Jack Huston, Kelly Macdonald, Stephen Graham, Michael Stulhbarg and Shea Wigham all really stood out to me much more than Buscemi.
I actually think Buscemi was playing against type as Nucky. The character was a charmer, but he had to scrap and claw his way to the top. I think casting a more traditionally handsome actor as Nucky would have been lazy. His charm would have been more easily explained because of his looks. Buscemi's Nucky ascension to power was due to his drive to rise above what was god given to him.
He was charming and driven, but wasn't above getting his hands dirty if required and showing his ugly side to those that crossed him.

Battlestar Galactica (2004)

I had two sentences for this, but lets go verbose on this one.

I had fond, nostalgic memories of the original series. Even had fond memories of that season when they went low tech (I.e. low budget) and found late '70s?, early '80s earth?. So for this countdown I was tempted to go with the original, but if I had done that I'd have had to include (or bump it for) Salvage 1. While my "only one to list" list might suggest otherwise in a few weeks, nostalgia wasn't really criteria.

But that nostalgia had me reluctant to watch the 2004 version. I didn't watch until I moved into an area with lots of Mormons and figured catching up with the new version would give me a crash course in understanding my neighbors. That didn't work, in part as there was nothing to understand other than most were great and generous people. But the 2004 version did work for me as entertainment.

Almost enough to get the two NXIVM documentaries that I know about on to my list. Almost. Besides if I put those on the list there would have been another half dozen sex cult documentaries on the list.

I do agree with that sentiment and if you look at the real guy he’s based on, he wasn’t a suave good looking dude either. Casting Jon Hamm certainly would have been a mistake as well, doesn’t make sense for the character. I just never was sure I loved Buscemi in the part. Don’t think he had the range and depth to really carry a lead in such a dark emotional drama.

I actually just read that they first considered Gandolfini for Nucky because they said he had a strong physical resemblance to the real guy but after having been Tony Soprano, that seems like a bad idea. Brings too much similar baggage. Sounds like they went with Buscemi because Scorsese wanted to work with him.

I see I'm the high scorer for Chappelle's Show and I'll wear that distinction proudly. Not the first show of its kind by any means but far and away the freshest and most hilarious sketch comedy I've ever seen. The two complete seasons are funny to an unreal level with very few lulls at all. Was appointment viewing at its time from the first episode onward, it became the first series I bought on DVD in its entirety and I can still be greatly amused whenever I choose to stream it some 20 years later.

So many great moments. So many weird moments.

Up Next: The one show that I grew to hate because of this countdown. Mainly because a lot of you don't know how to spell or use apostrophe's.
For a laugh you should list the spelling used next to each ranker

I loves me a good sketch show and this was inspired genius.
Still eminently watchable to this day. Just watched the Wayne Brady sketch yesterday

Anytime a show or movie involves any accidents, injuries, or health issues, I get a 10-minute diatribe about that's not how it works in real life.
Oh, boy. She really needs to watch the NCIS New Orleans episode about the Plague. The wrtiers couldn't even be bothered to read the Wikipedia article on it. Every single thing is wrong. I spent a bunch of time yelling at the screen. Since it's like episode three, I never went back.

And those accents were so bad.

Chapelle Show is damn funny, but I ended up having to cut it. I’ve got a few obscure sketch shows at the end of my rankings that I know didn’t make the cut
