The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 69: Firefly (16 Viewers)

I wonder if the 3 stooges would seem as good today as it did at 2am after coming home from hanging out with friends.

Along those lines, I wonder how many older shows people ranked higher because we remember them as must watch when the reality was many were only watch (like the only thing half decent on).

You wouldn't watch something because it's in the black-and-white? Does this apply to movies, too?
I generally don't. It does diminish it for me but I am not sure why.

I held off on It's a Wondefful Life and Casablanca because of it. I finally decided to give it a go. They were ok but I didn't think they were top 10 or anything.

For whatever reason B/W just diminishes it for me.
Even Young Frankenstein? What about The Artist?
I love Young Frankenstein. It's one of my favorite horror movies. I have never heard of The Artist.

It's not that I won't watch B/W it's just a weird thing where my perception lessens for some unexplainable reason. It doesn't make sense at all.

Didn't it win the Best Picture Oscar?

Some of us are 30 and definitely missed some of the shows in the top 200 so far. Mr rogers, la law, 90210...all before my time.

Do a lot of people only watch stuff when it originally aired? I mean, I wasn't alive when Get Smart aired but I watched it later and put it on my list. I assume people will have stuff like I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners on there despite not being alive for them, but maybe I'm over-estimating that.
I’d guess that you’re overestimating that. I’ve had a hit mostly miss relationship with TV. I’m older than you. I think. I had super hippie parents. Zero tv for the first 10 years of my life. Only allowed 1 hour of tv a day once we got a tv. Even after my awesome step dad entered the picture at 11. That means no Brady bunch, cartoons, mash etc. my step dad bought the first tv we ever owned and would watch it like a normal person. I would sneakily watch his shows. Dallas,Rockford files, hawaii five O, etc. I’ve made no effort to find and watch those shows that I missed as a kid or an adult. There are many shows already revealed in this countdown that I’ve never heard of, let alone ever seen. I’m also a skinflint and was quasi broke for awhile as a young adult. So if it wasn’t on network tv, I didn’t see it.

I think a lot of these haven't had the same staying power. If it hasn't become something with a second life on Netflix or Hulu, I probably haven't seen it.

Take Friends though. That was definitely before my time, but it was extremely heavily syndicated so I'd seen it here and there...but then it was HUGE on Netflix. Im sure I love Lucy was too, but on the "old people" channels with MASH and other stuff I'm aware of but would never watch (isn't I Love Lucy black and white?).

Something like the Office was similar - I don't think I know anyone who saw it actually air live but almost everyone I know has seen it end to end streaming.

You wouldn't watch something because it's in the black-and-white? Does this apply to movies, too? I can't imagine avoiding classics for that reason.

I fall into your category on The Office - never saw a single episode during the original run but have probably seen all of them now. :bag:
Never watched the office

I don't understand the concept of not wanting to watch black and white television shows. There are some fantastic shows in black and white.
It's not that I won't watch B/W but that it takes away from the movie/show slightly. It's not rational and there is not good explanation. It just is for me.

At first I thought "the office" talk meant it was being listed......and immediately I thought, no way! The Office will be top 10. If it's not, this list is null, and void!

Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica!

Binge watch the Office man. It's a great show.

I watched a lot of color shows on a B&W TV as a teen.

Me too. I remember my dad thinking it was absurd for anyone to have a bedroom TV. It had humorously big telescoping rabbit ears that I had to point awkwardly to get the signal. My fondest memories of it are watching UCLA basketball games on tape delay starting at 11pm. I had to watch with very low volume, me and the tv under a blanket so the light didn't shine under my door. I think it was a 9" tv, maybe 12.

Wooden have it any other way.

Similar story, although we had a television in our household when I was a kid, we had ONE television in the house. And my parents controlled what was on it other than early saturday mornings.
There was almost a major kerfuffle at home when my grandparents dared gift me a television when I turned 12. It was like a 15" b/w only and got all of four channels, but the horror.

I mention this because Dukes of Hazzard was mentioned earlier and well, my father wouldn't allow that "asinine" show be put on his television, so I rarely got to see it (maybe at a friends house). So, all my friends would be talking about it, and well, I had nothing at all to add but jealousy.
Fast forward a few years later and my father had no problem allowing the A-Team to be watched (sorry if a spoiler). Because that was much more high brown tv I suppose.

I remember having a small B/W TV in my room when I was probably 11 or 12. Summers and weekends I often fell asleep to it. And watched Lil Rascals and Three Stooges Sunday mornings after my paper route and going back to sleep. I think my parents gifted me a larger color one a couple years later.

Didn't it win the Best Picture Oscar?
Yes. Plus Best Director, Best Actor, Best Costume design, and Best Score. Released in 2011.

We saw it in the River Oaks Cinema, which was built in 1939. Very nice.

Was the paper you delivered Grit?

Movies - I’ll watch old ones. Some of my top ten or so movies are from before I was born or right around it (12 Angry Men, Dr. Strangelove, Network). I think it’s just a different art form that can forget about trying to be relevant to a time and place on a weekly basis, I don’t know.
My #1 movie all time was from before I was born, FWIW

I had that on my list at #26, though I had it labeled as "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey". I think it was explicitly discussed earlier, and was decided to have the two shows(Sagan and Tyson) count as one?

I dont remember this specifically for Cosmos. I havent seen Spacetime Odyssey, but it's different than the original, right? When I looked it up, they seemed to be distinctly different.

they are different. I asked about it. A Spacetime Odyssey is Tyson

Sagan's is iconic. a huge effect on my childhood.

great show. great ensemble cast. lot of people hated the finale. i loved it.
I was obviously the high ranker here, so I loved the show. Thought the finale tried to get too clever/cute, but ultimately didn't detract from the show IMO. Indeed a tremendous cast as you said.

Hated the movie in the '80's. Never expected to like this. Only watched because it was the first streaming show in the conversations for TV awards. Not sure it is a show to "like" or "enjoy", but its great TV.

It says it's a reboot. I assume it's very similar. Although the Tyson one came out 34 years after the Sagan one and our knowledge of space has likely changed in that time.

Never really watched Cosmos or St Elsewhere. Handmaid’s Tale is another one that was good until it wasn’t. Never did finish it. Broken record, I know, but this should have lasted maybe half as long or so.

Definitely watched this one. Also got pretty bad so it didn’t make my 70. Was on the original list to be culled, though. I first became aware of it not because it was fantasy football related, but because I was a big Jon Lajoie fan. He had an HBO deal that never panned out. Saw him live once.

Finally a Top 200 entry from my list. This show introduced me to Nick Kroll and Mark Duplass (and Nadine Velasquez as Sofia Ruxin). Lowbrow humor in a fantasy football setting - what more could you ask for?
