I offered Arian Foster for him right after he was drafted at 1.01 and am really glad that offer was rejected. That Alabama O-Line made him look way better than he is. He may end up being competent, but to draft a RB 3rd overall he should at least be a once in 5-7 years kind of back. He hasn't been that and doesn't appear to have that in him.

He wasn't horrible last year. I know the YPC finished at 3.6, but he had either 100 total yards and/or a score nearly every week. Was that just because Cle feed him the ball no matter what?
This year his pace for touches, especially receptions, where he was okay at YPR for a RB, is way down. I know some folks already are calling him William Green 2, but I saw a rookie in a bad team last year have a decent rookie RB season. I really am struggling to believe he's just a bad runner.

technically, they only need to have him play like a late first rounder, depending on what their record ends up being. also, it depends if you subscribe to the extra year rule. ie, a first round pick next year is only worth a second this year.

For Indy, absolutely. For where everyone rated him coming out of college and for what his FF value was, that's not good enough.
Yep! Some people get too caught up in the box score without actually watching entire games to know the stories behind those box scores. Fantasy football is all about production so it's all that matters at the end of the day.. but the Richardson panic has been out of control

And this will be his issue near-term. Until he learns all the protections he's not going to get the touches fantasy players want. Some seem convinced it is some sort of lack of talent though, those people aren't going to change their minds until he proves he can produce. I think he will.

That was a bittersweet moment. The bitter: we probably won't see him in that situation again anytime soon. The sweet: living proof that he's still adjusting to the blocking schemes.

The problem with TRich (outside of vision) is that he just has no burst out of his cuts or broken tackles. I've always looked for guys that don't just break tackles or make cuts, but those that run through them without slowing down. TRich looks like he should be that guy. He has the leg strength to run through tackles and keep his momentum, but it's not actually translating to the field.
As it is, every time he sheds a tackle or makes a cut he comes to a complete stop and it takes him forever to get going again. On that nice run after the catch he had, he was so far in the open field that he had time to spend 3 seconds shaking the guy off and getting going again. On running plays there are just too many bodies nearby, and inevitably for every tackle he breaks or cut he makes he has a gang of 4 players hanging on him before he gets another yard downfield because he's not bursting out of it.
There was one play tonight that was almost a caricature of this. He made a cut, and a guy grabbed him from behind and the refs immediately blew the play dead for forward progress. He was at such a dead stop after his cut that a guy just grabbing onto him made the whistle blow because there was no forward progress. Only, that progress was stopped almost entirely by Richardson himself.

I like Richardson and am pulling for him, but serious question, how long do you expect this to take?
At this point, Richardson has been practicing with the Colts for about as long as Bradshaw did before he took his first snap with Indy. Granted, Bradshaw had some extra time to study the playbook, but by now Richardson probably has more practice reps than Bradshaw did when he took his first carry for Indy and Bradshaw looked good pretty much right away.

I can't say for sure as I was doing a few things while watching at the time, but why would they blow a play dead because someone was hurt during the play? Or are you saying someone was hurt before the play started?Wasn't that the play blown dead because there was an injured player on the field?

Reminds me of Frank Gore's FF situation this season. Will get most/all of the goal-line carries, loses touches on third downs, passing downs and hurry-up packages. But is on a good team so TD upside is there, but during weeks when he doesn't score he'll likely be a disappointment in PPR formats.

I have no idea how long it will take. It's clear he's not gotten it yet though. He's lost out there on passing downs. He's tentative to the hole on running plays. The expectations for him were ridiculous. I've never stated anything else. It's funny how when he was first traded I was a detractor. Now, I'm a supporter. The thing is, my view hasn't changed. I could care less about Richardson in fantasy and don't own him in a single league, and I play in many. Football isn't as simple as people try to make it and it is clear most fantasy players don't get real football.

Wasn't being tentative to the hole one of the things that some Browns fans complained about as well? I'm not sure that has to do with learning the playbook, but it seems like the things that learning the playbook affects keeps expanding every week based on the things we see Richardson not doing well. It's gotten to the point where Richardson can't do anything negative, because anything negative he does is spun as a positive for being "proof" that he doesn't know the playbook yet.
Also, that reason is really running its course, and if he really is struggling because he doesn't know the playbook well enough I think we've gotten to the point where it's a negative on Trent that it's taking him this long, not a negative on the situation where Trent is the victim of it. As was mentioned, he's had more full practices by now than Bradshaw did for the Colts when he started playing. Cedric Benson was signed by the Packers on August 12th last year and within a month he'd had a better game than anything Trent has even half-resembled putting together yet. Trent's month is just about up.

I didn't like that he didn't participate in any of the pre-draft workouts besides the 40 and bench. I think before the draft he claimed his vertical was 36" but he doesn't play like it.

There were no holes on his first few carries. He had a decent game overall given the lack of touches.
I think he's shaping up to be a lot like Ricky. Ricky was never the biggest YPC monster. More of a grinder who would occasionally bust one.
He is slippery in the open field though and you saw some of that on his catch.

He's also 228 pounds at just 5'9". He's a POWER back like Jamal Lewis, Ricky Williams, and Michael Turner. Obviously not gonna explode like CJ Spiller.

Ran the 40 at his pro day too, not at the combine. Times were in the mid 4.5s but said he wasn't 100%, par for the course with him. Probably equates to a combine time of around 4.6.

I did notice that. He really slows down when he makes those jagged cuts.
He's capable of making sharp cuts at full speed, but when he's out in the open field as a receiver he falls in love with the start-stop juke.

Pretty incredible how, once again, the first hole just happened to open up on the first play that Donald Brown came in.
It didn't look like there was a huge hole for Brown either. He just shot out of the backfield into the small hole with a burst that we've yet to see from Richardson. How much of it is Richardson having no holes and how much of it is him just not finding them or getting to them quickly enough? I'm not saying that's the case, but when every other Colt this year has had no problems getting holes created for them it seems like kind of an iffy excuse to think that the O-line magically blocks worse when Richardson is back there.
I know people like to say that YPC isn't comparable with a guy like Brown because he's getting carries in passing situations, but if you take out passing downs and look at only 1st/2nd down and 10 yards or less, here are the Colts' YPC by player this year.
Brown: 9.2
Ballard: 4.7
Bradshaw: 4.6
Richardson: 2.9
Clearly, there are some holes being created. Does Richardson have some kind of ridiculously bad luck that they only get created on plays when he's not in, or is he just failing to find and/or get through them? Playbook, I know. We were in uncharted territory with Richardson playing a few days after getting traded. But he's been there almost a month now. Guys get signed in mid-August and play in early September pretty often and I don't ever remember hearing this much about the playbook for them. We're not in uncharted territory anymore on that front.

Kind of like how the O-line magically blocks for Brandon Jacobs but not for David Wilson. People refuse to believe that Wilson and to a lesser extent Richardson are terrible, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
On the 2nd last drive Indy had he blew it. He dropped that screen pass that looked well set up and that could have been the difference in the game. On the next play he was overpowered by a blitzer and it hurried Luck's throw. Not knowing the playbook can't be blamed on either of those plays.
Not surprisingly he was on the bench for the last drive. I think that Brown is clearly the better 3rd down back/hurryup back now I would be surprised to see Richardson used much in thos situations from now on.

Need some time to learn pass pro? I get it. But how much time do you need to know which hole to run though. He's either not very good or you have to start questioning his intelligence.

Jamal Lewis was fast in his prime. By his second season he had a run of 75 yards and a catch for 77 yards. The following two years his long run was 75 yards and 82 yards. What we've seen out of Trent is only comparable to Jamal Lewis if we're comparing him to the twilight of Lewis' career. In the beginning of his career Lewis packed a size, speed combo only Bo Jackson could compare to.
Michael Turner didn't get the nickname burner by being a slow power back. by his second season he had broke off an 83 yard run, and the following three years his longest runs were all 70+.
Ricky Williams is the only realistic comparison you made, and I would say given what we've seen so far Ricky Williams is his absolute ceiling.
