The Wire (1 Viewer)

Watching season 5 again. Is there anyone who actually liked that storyline involving the newspaper?:popcorn:I find myself fast-forwarding through any scenes involving the reporters when they are at work. And MAN... is Dominic West's British accent coming through loud and clear that season. Especially the first few episodes. I have no idea how they didn't catch that as they were filming, or at least in post-production.
Awful.Season 5 was the worst of them all, IMO.
I concur that the season overall may be the worst, mainly because the fake serial killer storyline was so unbelievable to me. However, the last several episodes were among the best of the series and the finale was perfect for wrapping up the series.

It wasn't my favorite story line. But there's only re-winding with The Wire, no fast-forwarding. Shame on you :fishy:

I think every season of The Wire is brilliant. And while some seasons are stronger than others, the weakest season of The Wire is still better than 99% of the other TV shows.

‘The Wire’ Monopoly Game

Monopoly, the iconic board game that for decades has instilled the values of aggressive capitalism into the young, joined forces today with the hit TV show ‘The Wire’.

“The Wire is all about corners,” says Hasbro spokesperson Jane McDougall, “and the Monopoly board is all about corners. It was a natural fit.”

Based around the journey a young gangster might take through the fictionalised Baltimore of the show, players move from corner to stoop, past institutions featured in successive series like the school system and the stevedores union, acquiring real estate, money and power before ending up at the waterfront developments and City Hall itself.

“Where the original game has ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’,” McDougall continues, “we have ‘Re-up’ and ‘The Game’ which reflects the chance element of life on the streets. If you draw a ‘The Game’ card you might for instance get ‘Prop Joe calls a meet – go straight to Collington Square’ or ‘Drive-By! You get shot. Miss a go’ or even ‘Chris and Snoop are looking for you! Hide! Miss 2 goes.’”

“We hope The Wire Monopoly game will go down well not just with fans of the show, but everyone who secretly wishes to be a poor violent black drug dealer from America.”

This can't be serious.

Look at the other articles. It isn't.

Edit: and seriously, since when does Monopoly have two jails and no "go to jail" space? What's the point of jail if you can rarely get sent there?

I have been debating this with a few pals, with the millions of channels HBO has these days why not have a Channel called HBO Reruns or something where each day they just play HBO shows from the past marathons. One day Oz, next day Rome, next day Carnivale etc...

Those shows are just sitting there gathering dust, why not air them again?

If they were on TV all the time in marathon form, the DVDs wouldn't sell... people would just DVR the whole series. They get more profit (per property) from DVDs than from subscriptions.

Why not? I'm guessing so they can make more money. The Wire box set sells for $104 retail at Amazon. They can syndicate The Wire to BET and Direct TV for whatever fee they're paying. My bet is that some smart guy figured out they'd make more doing that than by tacking on another HBO package and adjusting the price for cable providers and customers. It would be a cool station, though.

Mrs. TR & I just finished Season 2 & are about to start S3 - we're both hooked. I've started calling our basset hound "Wee-bey" much to the wife's annoyance. It's win-win all around.

I don't think I've ever watched a drama series a second time but I'm doing it with The Wire on 101. They just finished the first season and I can't believe how much I love the show even more. So many things I missed the first time. What a great show.

I started watching the Wire again on DirecTV and I was so into it again that it felt like the first time. So many things to pick up watching a second time. I couldn't get enough of the one show per week, so I went to my DVD collection when I noticed that my wife lent out season 1 to her boss. I was so pissed even though the DVD set just sat there for over a year.I was watching season 2 on DirecTV, but couldn't help myself this past week. I watched the rest of season 2 and I started season 3 last night. Such an incredible show even a second time around. I can't wait for the second time Brother Mouzzone meets up with Omar. It's probably my favorite moment in the Wire.

Wanted to watch the entire series. Is it on HBO On Demand? or should I go the Netflix route for a couple of months?
It's pretty much always on On Demand, but only 6 eps available at a time and they only rotate about once a month, so it will take you about a year and you will have to wait until they start back on season 1. I'd definitely do netflix.

I just finished re-watching Season 3. Even though I've seen the series already, I still look forward to every episode as if I didn't know what was coming next. It's even more amazing the second time around. I know that I'll re-watch it again.

It was such a great show. Every once in a while, I'll introduce someone to the show, but I'm amazed by how many people still haven't watched it.

Omar, Bunk and Bubs are three of my favorite characters ever in a show.

I don't see anyone really having success since this show. A spot here N there and Omar is in Boardwalk but...(and this might need another thread)... why not do this show some more? Plan on a few more seasons.

Simon had that Iraq war thing he did that wasn't that good.

I know it'd be super rare and irregular and all, but what reasons would it take to bring back a show?

Large following of dedicated fans, actors not screaming for huge $, writers and cameramen ready, what don't they have?

David Simon actually has the concept for a 6th season, it would focus on the influence of Mexican immigrants. I doubt we ever see the show return though. It never did that well for HBO in terms of ratings or awards.

You ever heard of a show called Treme on HBO? It's the show Simon is doing now, and he's currently working on the second season. The actors who played Bunk and Freamon have starring roles. You should check it out. The first season is very good.

 I was aware of this show's existence and I knew it was well thought-of, but that was it; I seriously didn't know what it was even about. Thanks to 101 I've worked my way through the first couple of seasons. I feel like I owe a this forum a debt of gratitude for putting this show on my radar.

We wife bought be the whole series for Christmas even tough I own 4/5 seasons. One thing I didn't know existed is the prequels. Have any of you seen them? Apparently they made three prequels before season 5 as a promotional stunt. It's Prop Joe back in the 60's when he was in high school, Omar back in the 80's when he was just learning the game, and the last one is when Bunk and McNaulty met. All three of them are excellent.

Yeah, these were available on demand for awhile. They're pretty short right? LIke 3 mins?I also have the whole set, my buddy bought me for them during my surgery/chemo last year... and watched the whole series like 2x even though I had already seen it on initial air

Best Buy had a sale the week of Christmas. All of their HBO box sets were 50% off. I picked up the complete 5 seasons for 90.00. I had been DVRing the show on Directv, and was at the beginning of season 3. I already finished that whole season abd I am into season 4.

Man, I love season 4.

Then you're gonna hate hearing how I got the complete series for $75 last week.

Who do you share your wife with?

By the way, fans of The Wire should absolutely watch Homicide. David Simon also had a hand in this and David Mamet even wrote some of the episodes. It's no Wire, but it's fantastic.

Finished off the first season and really enjoyed it. Love me some good drug storylines. I'm about four episodes into season 2 and I'm not really feeling the dock storyline. Oh and Zigi might be the most annoying character ever.

All points balls on accurate. Getting to season 4 makes it all worth it.

Season 3 starts next Sunday on Directv 101. I'm not a big fan of this season due to the ridiculousness of Hamsterdam, but am still looking forward to watching it again.

So, I watched the whole 5 seasons again two years ago while I was laid up after my surgery/chemo.... and after seeing you guys talk about this, decided to rewatch again this year. (I have 3 monitors at my computer, so just let them run on one while doing work). Already through season 1, three into season 2.

I still LOVE Season 1. Season 2 was, back in the day, what led me astray for a little while, but in hindsight it's not nearly as bad as I thought. Season 3, if I recall, was underrated especially compared to Season 4.

I think once it's all finished, you'll be glad you watched it.

:coffee: getting through it at the time seems like a chore, but it's definitely crucial to the series.

OH yeah. I remember thinking the exact same thing... how much I wanted to punch Zig in the face. But what an amazing character arc.

I agree that Ziggy is annoying and the way season 2 begins almost makes it feel like a totally different show. However, the season comes on like train down the stretch of Season 2. Epic stuff IMO.
