Theismann rips Ricky Williams (1 Viewer)

:shrug:I don't see what he said that's so wrong:

"We have rules in the National Football League. It's real simple. Don't do drugs and you can play. It's a privilege to be able to play professional football. It's not some rite of passage. He's insulted the Miami Dolphins after they took him back and gave him a chance to play.
He's absolutely right. Rasta Ricky is a disgrace and an embarassment. If weed isn't addictive at all, then he's even more stupid and disgraceful. All he had to do was not smoke pot and he couldn't do it. He put smoking pot above his teammates, his career, the organization and the fans. I love chocolate, but if I were playing in the NFL and they had a no chocolate rule, I'd stop eating chocolate until after I was done playing.

I gotta agree with Joe T on this one.

To be honest, I don't give a hoot what Ricky does or doesn't do in his personal life. But after the way he left the Dolphins in the first place, leaving the team after the draft with no replacement RB, he should be the perfect player and team mate. Getting nailed on a drug test one year after the Dolphins took him back, which I still can't believe they did, is not the way to go.

I therefore agree with Theisman that playing in the NFL is a dream come true. I wouldn't be upset if Ricky was permanently banned from the league.

He still left me in the dark as to whether or not water is wet.Who are the people he's trying to convince? I think this opinion is shared by most already, he's just piling on with comments like "I don't ever want to be mentioned in the same breath as Ricky Williams as a football player. He's a disgrace to the game."

Be careful there Joe, I might be willing to promise you a little statue if you'll change your name to Ricky Williams. The pronunciation wasn't enough.

Maybe I'm confused but didn't Ricky's most recent offense not involve marijuana and also didn't it happen before he "rejoined" the Dolphins? What's Theisman whining about exactly?

I don't think it was ever released exactly what caused him to fail the drug test. All we know is that he failed it. Besides, what difference does it make what drug he was using, a guy with a history and suspensions should be super above board. And when that same guy ruined his team's season by "retiring" before a drug test could be reported, after the draft and after all the solid FA RB's were off the market, he should be extra super careful and go above what is required during the offseason.Bottom line is that I was against Miami taking him back after the way Ricky handled his initial "retirement" If they take him back again after all this, well, then the Dolphins deserve whatever happens.

Theismann can be a tool, but I think he speaks for a lot of players here. There are countless players that have given a lot of pain and time to the NFL. These players have sacrificed their bodies and time with their families to be there.

So when a guy as talented as Williams treats the game so casually, it's an insult to a lot of hard-working players. Williams has stated that he doesn't love football. And essentially, smoking pot was more important to him than playing. That equals a player that does not respect the game and the sacrifice that players need to make.

Don't always agree with what Theisman says, but he's right here. Ricky Williams is an idiot, and the Dolphins gave him a chance to get his life back together, while he could still play football. He's screwed up his own life, and it will all be downhill from here on.

He's right about RW, but he's still the worst announcer in Pro Football history. He also looked ridiculous with that single bar on his helmet during a a time when only kickers did that.

Doesn't anybody have any class anywhere?
:lmao: This from the guy who was screwing around with Kathy Lee Crosby while married to his first wife.

:potkettle: However, it still doesn't take away from the truth of his statement. Perhaps someone with a little less *ahem* baggage could have more credibility by saying what he said.

CFL | Williams not worried about Theismann's comments

Published Tue May 30 4:13:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Toronto Argonauts RB Ricky Williams isn't worried about Joe Theismann's latest harsh assessment of him. After all, Williams said Tuesday, May 30, he knows an apology will be forthcoming. After practice today, Williams noted that Theismann has often been critical of him in the past, consistently bashing anyone who is willing to associate with the controversial star. However, Theismann reverses course when he sees Williams in person, the player said. "Every time he says something, here's what happens: He says a remark about me that's offensive, then when he has to (broadcast) one of our (Dolphins) games, he comes in and apologizes and says, 'I'm sorry,'" Williams said. Williams indicated that he would accept an apology from Theismann.

That's damn funny.

Someone needs to remind Theismann that there is no such thing as an addiction to marijuana, at least not a physical one.
Any activity can be addictive. You seem to be fixated solely on physical addiction and, while perhaps overstated with marijuana your body can develop a form of dependency on it. Anyway, Ricky has two options here: either he's addicted or he's too stupid and undisciplined to hold himself together even for millions of dollars in a sport he worked all his life to excel at. Not pretty either way.

He's just piling on - Totally agree. I think hes a terrible announcer, he states the obvious, much like many people in corporate america today. Instead of providing more value, he reiterates what we already know. His comments although correct in that Ricky screwed up, were overboard and uncalled for. We have heard this same line of _____ for weeks. He should stick to discussing Norman Einstein, the genius.

I think that dill-hole Theismann meant to say that playing pro football is not a right, as "rite of passage" makes absolutely no sense. This is typical of a stupid person insecure about himself and the thought that other people might find out that he really is stupid, like someone who would change the pronunciation of their surname to rhyme with "Heisman" when they were in college.

Wow, Joe Thiesman reminding everyone once again that he is over-opinionated and under-informed.
:goodposting: What makes me cringe is that we will all have to listen to this #### call MNF games this season. I just got over the ....

JT - "Well, when I played football the game was different. Players cared for the game. These guys don't care. Look, see that? How can that guy make a play. Now when I played the game it was different. I would do this and I would do that and I would love to see these guys play back when I played. Did I mention I played football? See what needs to happen is this guy just needs to throw the ball, preferably a spiral, I could throw a spiral back when I played."........ :hophead:

:sarcasm:

Maybe if Ricky was threatening to sue, or some such nonsense, I'd be fine with Theismann saying that. But Ricky is being very chill, sucking it up, and playing for relative peanuts in Toronto.

Maybe if Theismann's own son hadn't been caught with coke, I'd be fine with these comments. The source does need to be considered, IMO. Theismann doesn't get the moral high ground too often.

Maybe if the Dolphins were hanging him out to dry, I'd buy Joe's assesment. But they have stood behind him throughout this latest suspension, and if he had tested positive for weed, I have to believe they woulda dropped him like a bag of dirt. Their support of him speaks volumes to me. BTW, everyone still talking about weed is talking directly out of their ###. There's not one comment, rumor, or proof that Ricky tested positive for weed on this latest violation. THere's a lot of things that can cause a positive test. The wrong supplement, etc.

I know that sounds like excuses for Ricky, but it's more that I think Theismann is a donkey.

Honestly, at the end of the day, he's one guy, playing football, and it's his career. Anything Ricky has done negatively, has hurt himself more than anything. He left the Fins hanging 2 years ago. Form a fan standpoint, unforgivable, no doubt. Fins fans want to hate him for that, I'm right there with you.

But all this venom for a guy who has made bad choices that hurt himself. This isn't Leonard Little ya know? He ruined his life? What? Isn't that a little melodramatic? Football isn't as important to him as others. Big deal. Same with Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, and probably hundreds of others.

As to it being an insult to the other players--gimmee a break. I've known too many pro athletes to buy that load of crap.

Didn't Theisman's son get busted with crack cociane not too long ago?
Yep, distributing coke out of some apartment near Notre Dame.He also deserted his wife for Cathy Lee Crosby.

He also had a teammate named George Rogers who's battles with drugs are well documented.

Theismann is an idiot. LT should have broken his other leg too. ;)

FWIW, he went on this rant first on The Fan 590 (Toronto) because he used to play for the Argoanuts in the CFL...and then he went to ESPN and expounded on his rant...it was around 9:30 am...

GREAT to listen to...13 minutes long...

He really needs to get of his high horse. Being talented enough to play pro football dosn't mean your life has to revolve around the sport. Ricky made some choices that damaged his football career, but that dosn't make him any less of a person. Ricky Williams is still good enough to play football, and that's all that matters. Whether or not his lifestyle meets Theisman's standards is irrelevent.

Wow! I wonder how Joe Theismann feels about John Riggins and if he would also through Riggins under the bus for his drinking?

Or possibly, maybe Theismann justs sees Ricky Williams mistakes as a stepping stool to promote his own career.

Really classy Joe, real classy.

I gotta agree with Joe T on this one.

I don't know, Ricky hasn't killed anyone in a drunk driving accident ( Leonard Little) or killed his wife and unborn child like Rae Carruth, or beat his wife/girlfriend(s) like Lawrence Phillips or Michael Pittman, or been caught with pounds and pounds of marijuana in his car like Nate Newton, or brought a guy to a SB city who committed a murder like Ray-Ray Lewis, Ricky hasn't been convicted of drug traffic like Bam Morris , hasn't served hard time like Bam Morris, hasn't committed crimes like NY Sack Exchange member Mark Gastineau, isn't serving a lengthy prison sentence like Dexter Manley after numerous NFL suspensions, isn't serving a 15-20 year sentence like Cecil Collins from the Dolphins who got caught burglarizing a home a few years ago...the list goes on and on...Ricky only wants to play to pay off the money he owes the Dolphins..

I know his multpile suspensions are bad, but in the context of what some of the other players in NFL history have done, Ricky is a Saint!

(pun intended)

IN keeping with the line of thinking, I truly hope that Joe T spends 15 minutes of MNF time to expound on the classlessness of Jamal Lewis who served time in prison for trying to facilitate a drug deal. The list of football players questionable activities is long and Joe is a boob. The only reason that the good ole days are the good ole days is because players back then didn't face the media scrutiny they do now. This isn't an excuse for the actions of present players, it just means that a lot of crap that happened in Joey T's day never made it to public knowledge.

Gastineau was a wife beater and LT was a coke head two facts that came out after their playing days were well over. Yup..those were the days.

Williams didn't make the right choice regarding his financial future, but compared to the rest of the NFL (going by interviews/comments/etc...) he is a genius. Williams is well-spoken and from most accounts decent human being. I wish him nothing but the best in Canada, as I believe the NFL policy regarding THC is a joke.

people need to lay off williams. I thought he let down his teammates when he retired when he did, but other then that, get off his jock. People make it sound likes hes such a bad person for trying to live his life. None of you know ricky. I sure dont, but it sounds to me like its a dude who was gifted with a body for football, but once he made some money he just wanted to relax and take it easy and live his life and enjoy the things he wanted to do. He tried to quit the game because of this, and the dolphins took him to court essentially FORCING him back on the team. He did everything he could after losing that battle, and came back strong and worked hard and helped the dolphins elevate their game last season. He got busted for another failed test, but we dont even know what its for (most rumors are for a suppliment, which isnt very far fetched considering how much weight he was being asked to put back on to return to the game).

Simply put, I dont think the man wants much to do with football anymore. People act like this is inexcusible. We are all people, just cause hes famous and plays football doesnt make him any different. If he doesnt like what hes doing he should have every right to quit and find a new job just like all the rest of us.

If smoking pot is something that he enjoys that much, more power to him. He earned enough money in the first part of his career to feed his habit for the rest of life, and live comfortably while doing it. Untill the dolphins stepped in and wouldnt even let him make that choice.

 Ricky didn't earn that money, end of story. He's a worthless dope addict and getting what he deserves.

Edit to add that JoeT still sucks.

The only thing Joe should have mentioned that he didn't, is how much of an embarrasment the Phins are.....everything they have done with Ricky makes them a joke.

Toronto strikes back (sort of):

Argonauts take a shot at Theismann over comments

The Canadian Press

TORONTO (Jun 3, 2006)

The Toronto Argonauts got back at former quarterback Joe Theismann last night.

Three days after Theismann criticized the CFL club for signing suspended NFL running back Ricky Williams, the Argos made light of his comments during their exhibition game versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

In the second quarter during a stoppage in play, the Argos ran an ad on the Jumbotron at Rogers Centre with Theismann wearing a helmet with the old A emblem on it. Out of nowhere, a giant pencil then appeared and proceeded to rub out the A, after which the words 'Happy Now Joe?' appeared, drawing a big cheer from the spectators on hand.

On Tuesday, Theismann condemned the Argos for signing Williams, saying the move was a "feeble excuse" by the Argos to sell tickets and that he was ashamed to have worn the A on his helmet.

Williams signed a one-year contract with Toronto after being suspended by the NFL for the 2005 season.

Thanks fatness. That's classic.I usually defend Theissman as broadcasting is harder than it seems but what he said recently was indefensible I think.

The CFL was smart to allow Williams to play, because he will bring more press to the league. But you think Theismann shouldn't have criticized Williams? If I was a former player, I'd be pretty angry about Williams' cavalier attitude towards the NFL.
