Theriot to Leadoff in Chicago (for now) (1 Viewer)

Just heard this (pretty significant) lineup development on the radio. They seem to think this is an indicator that a Brian Roberts deal is imminent and Piniella is more prepping Soriano to bat second than prepping Theriot to leadoff.

:P

Is this good or bad for Soriano owners. Also is Theriot the everyday starting SS?
I think it's probably a good indicator that Soriano won't be running nearly as much this year. At the same time, I don't know that it helps Theriot's SB numbers. If he's on base with Soriano, Lee, Ramirez behind him, I don't know that Piniella will feel the need to press on the base paths. But we'll see.

So...Soriano's going to continue to play out of position and the Cubs will be getting one of lowest OBP's from their lead off man in the majors. Makes sense.

eventually, i hope, the cubs lineup looks like this...roberts, ####udome, lee, ramierez, soriano, soto, theriot, pie

What position do you want him to play? Second? Pffft...please.
I am referring to the batting order, he should not be in the top 2.
Agreed. Sorry about that. Question: I have been living under the assumption that Soriano's place in the batting order has been dictated to a certain degree by, well, by Soriano. Is that true? I can't imagine Pinella going along with that but I also can't imagine why he should not be protecting Ramirez in the 5 hole.

I read the same thing last year and it's the only reason I'd think Pinella would keep him in the top 2, to keep Soriano happy. He should be in the meat of the order, the Cubs would be better off. Oh well, at least they're smart enough to want to leave Marmol in a setup role, at least they're evaluating one situation correctly. Assuming they acquire Roberts I think their best lineup would be RobertsFkudomeLeeA RamSorianoPieTheriotSoto

Who's their closer if Marmol is the setup man? I was under the impression that Marmol would win the closer role.

Wood.
Has this been confirmed?
I don't think so. But I think this is who they want to give it to leaving Marmol and Howry as set up. If he stays healthy, I think it's Wood's job. He's hitting upper 90s and Pinella said he's night and day from last year this time to now.

Heard on the radio this morning the Cubs want to be sure Wood can pitch effectively two days in a row, if he can then he will be given the job.
I think he's B2B later this week. I'm sure something official will be out there about a week from now.

I've always thought the 5-hole was the perfect lineup spot for Soriano's skill set. His power makes him good to protect your best hitters and drive in runs, plus when he gets on base he can try to steal and you can play small ball with the bottom of your lineup.Hitting him 1st or 2nd is just dumb.

Heard the same thing on ESPN this morning. Reported by Tim Kurkijian (spelling)Im hoping he is right because I took a flier on Wood late in my draft the other night.

So did I. I went with Howry in another draft last week, but luckily in that league I already had two closers (Corpas and Joe Bo). In the league I drafted Wood in I only have Percival. :) If this comes to fruition at least I won't be in too great of a hole in the save cat after the first month of the season when I'll undoubtebly be combing the wire for saves and looking for a trading partner.
