Thinking of going to the Masters, anyone ever been? Tips? (1 Viewer)

So I'm just looking on stubhub, considering just taking the plunge as its one of those events everyone "should" see.

Has anyone ever gone or do you go? Any tips or thoughts on going? Yes, I will bring money.

Thinking more about where to stay(I'd imagine Augusta is tough), parking, ways to get cheap(er) badges.

Thoughts?

My only tip is to scream "GET IN THE HOLE!!!" like a lunatic as soon as one of the golfers tees off on a par 5.

Go Thursday or Friday Lightest crowds. You will not find a place to stay within 2 hours of Augusta less than $500/night. If you are alone or with a buddy, nothing like sleeping in the car about 30 mins away. Augusta itself is pretty much a hell hole. But the club and tournament...it's worth it. They treat fans well. More beautiful than you can imagine. Best viewing spots are behind 7 green/8 tee and bleachers near 16th tee/15th green. Get there early. Put a chair down in one of those spots (nobody will take it). Go walk the entire course. Get exhausted from the uphill walks. Grab a pimento chesse sandwich and beer. Get back to your chair by 11 am. Watch golf. Head to driving range area around 6 pm and watch the pros post round practice. Be impressed that they never hit a bad shot. Drive 2 hours away before stopping for a nice dinner and find hotel. Fall asleep dreaming of breaking 70.

I'm going tomorrow (expecting lots of rain). I was there on Sunday when Bubba won two years back.

I'd hit the souvenir store early to make sure you get what you want - I went on Sunday and the place was empty by the end of the day. For a first timer, I'd say walk around and just see the course. If you'd rather squat and watch, I'd suggest the fairway hitting into the green at 15 or behind the tee at 16. Amen corner is obviously a must, but you really can't see the 13th green without binoculars (well, I can't anyway and my vision is pretty good).

Honestly, first time I'd walk all over the place and just see the holes. Wear comfortable shoes though - you'll be shocked at how hilly the course is compared to what you see on television. The drop from the 10th tee to fairway is enormous (same goes for walking back up with hill from the 18th fairway up to the 18th green).

Hotels are crappy and limited down there so unless the tiger less field has changed things a lot finding a place to stay will be tricky. I'd suggest going home with a waitress from Somewhere in Augusta.

Other suggestions so far are also good.

Scream 'dance like a monkey' every time a minority is teeing off.

I'll DVR it and play it here if I can hear you.

I'm curious with the weather and no Tiger if you can get some pretty slick deals on a package.
Minus Tiger I think its like four bucks Thursday-Saturday, and something like twelve on Sunday. Sunday will have free hot dogs and balloons for the kids, and if the weather holds out, pig races.

how are the prices for hats and shirts at the store on-site? i've seen some through an online store, and the pricing was ridiculously high (e.g. Visor = $50).

This. People cannot believe the undulation at Augusta the first time they attend the event

Yeah so we parked the car, checked in the gate, starting walking to the course and they then turned everyone around. It sucks, but I already received an email stating there will be refunds for today and an opportunity to buy Monday passes again next year.

I literally saw 2 pitches on the practice green and had to turn around.

That sucks. I can't imagine flying in, paying for hotel and all and then get washed out. For first-timer's with only a Monday pass the mental anguish would hurt.

Yeah there were people saying "I came in from X, just please let me take a look at the course and I'll turn back around." Luckily my trip is just about 2.5 hours back towards Atlanta, but it sucked. To be fair, it was raining with lots of lightening so not much they could do.

We stopped at a restaurant to see if it would let up and the place was packed - no standing room.

I ended up not going but thank you guys for the tremendous advice in here, I want to attack it and be better organized next year.

What is the dress code for Augusta?
