THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (3 Viewers)

I love Tom Petty. You called him “consistent” - well his catalog - in another post and for me he’s consistently very good. It would be hard to pick “the best” for him because of that and he just doesn’t have that stand out song. “The Waiting” is as close as any. The consensus is probably “American Girl” and I get that. My personal favorites “Even The Losers”.
Learning to Fly is probably my favorite.

Good timing - I have a few minutes between my back to back meetings to make my pick.

Picking the “best” song for this artist is extremely hard since his catalog is so vast and he touches so many genres/styles. I suppose this is why he fell this far (similar to Bowie).  Yo Mama selects:

2.32 - Prince - When Doves Cry

Yeah, it’s been played a lot, but that’s because it’s so awesome. I’m sure I’d pick a different song on a different day, but we’re here now.

This is on my short list of “perfect” songs. It’s a masterclass of pop, rock, and funk (even without bass). The fact it was so avant-garde and was still such a commercial hit speaks to its range and appeal.

If I had more courage and musical depth I could go with an animals theme with Dogs and Doves on my list, but that’s too much work and there’s no way I could pull it off.

STRIKE ONE

Pick 2.33 - Mumford & Sons, Dust Bowl Dance

I'm a sucker for both a song that builds and a song that tells a story, and this checks both boxes.  The album Sigh No More is excellent start to finish.  I saw them live on their Babel tour - great show, although I think that album is a little more uneven.  And then they ditched the banjo  :(  and, to me, lost their distinctive sound.  Also considered The Cave, Roll Away Your Stone, and Hopeless Wanderer, but this one is my favorite.

I'm being indecisive on my next pick and have to go run a meeting, so feel free so skip me for the next 90 minutes or so.  I will get something in later in the afternoon.

3.02 - Rage Against the Machine - Know Your Enemy

It was this or Nirvana for me here so Jzilla solved that conundrum.

This song rocks so hard and cuts so deep lyrically, it always been my favorite of theirs.

Yes, I know my enemies
They're the teachers who taught me to fight me
Compromise, conformity
Assimilation, submission
Ignorance, hypocrisy
Brutality, the elite
All of which are American dreams
All of which are American dreams
All of which are American dreams

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' catalog should still be available, since "You Wreck Me" is solo Tom Petty.

I'm gonna have to bow out for a while. I don't know if it'll get to me before I return, but can someone take a few choices for me? If they all get chosen before my turn comes, I can be skipped.

The album Wildflowers (which You Wreck Me is off of) is solo Tom Petty. Most of the Heartbreakers are on it, but they are on it as session players. Full Moon Fever is also solo Tom Petty.

Wildflowers is the second solo studio album by American musician Tom Petty, released on November 1, 1994.

I know that but it's not how we've handled "Blank and the Blanks" in previous drafts

ETA:  That's like saying Prince is still available because "Let's Go Crazy" was credited to Prince & the Revolution.

This draft isn't those drafts, and Tom Petty has three solo albums.

It's interesting. Paul, John, Ringo and George are available as solo acts, but they weren't John Lennon and the Beatles. Does that matter. I think technically simey is correct, but somehow she shouldn't be.
Paul McCartney has solo, and he has Paul McCartney and Wings aka Wings, etc.

I do see a difference when there’s a band leader vs members of a band. Bruce Springsteen is the band leader and name sake so his solo work and E Street work is off the board.
