THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (1 Viewer)

I'm as close to picking as I am sleeping. Insomnia took hold last night and I haven't slept a wink. Guess I'll try a write-up. Not something I normally do.

2.19 "Getaway" - Earth Wind & Fire

Was gonna go in a different direction here, but I know these guys wouldn't make it back to me. They were as good and as versatile as any band of their era.

This is a fun, high energy record led by their propulsive horn section and a great lead by Maurice White.
Great pick, and not one most would have thought of as their #1, probably. My top 2 are also in the "loved by EWF fans but not as well known to the casuals" category: Serpentine Fire and Evil.

Dang, thought they might last longer. I love that song but was planning on Can’t Hide Love.

All of these would be good. I honestly can't think of one song of theirs that I don't at least really, really like. From their classic period, anyway - maybe there's some lost early cut that stinks or a late-period piece I'm forgetting.

T. Rex was to be my next pick and like you I would have avoided the obvious popular choices of Bang A Gong or Jeepster.

Ride A White Swan was their first UK hit and I considered that but I was going to go with the single release after that, Hot Love, which was #1 in the UK and I think one of the best dance records every made (and it never seems to end, I think they just kept going until they ran out tape).

Pretty sure this is the song I've listened to the most over the past 20 years. It even seems to follow me around. Tame Impala surprised me with a brilliant live cover. For years the Laker's sound person used the (killer, dark and urgent) bass line on loop during replay delays. Adidas used it in a commercial. It's used in a video game my kid played for a few years. It's in several movies I've seen -- Anti-Trust, Pi, Snatch, Go. Heard it on West Wing, Third Watch and a few more. The smuggler's stand-off in Flight of the Phoenix may be the best scene with it. Hah! I'm watching Click Bait right now and there's that bass line again. What the?? Doo nuh nuh nuhnuh nununu, Doo nuh nuh nuh nuhnuh nununu. It's a cover of the bass.

Mezzanine is the Kind of Blue of TripHop. Massive Attack has 8 tracks that have charted higher than their best song. I think it's brilliant. It's slow and sulty some. It's a banger too. That bass line starts out so soft you can't help but turn up the volume. Slick mastering there. Then the percussions set a tone. Wall of guitars, synth effects and suddenly it's much louder than what you listened to before it. The lyrics depict romantic obsession, the music a romantic session. I like the outro as much as the intro. A drop dead moment rather than a climactic finale. Love this song too much really and the love/sutlry/sex thing is hopefully going to be a theme on my playlist. A "little" challenging finding artists whose best fits that, but I'm having fun and this band was snipable fo sho.

2.27 Massive Attack - Angel

play it loud or you miss a bunch. headphones or hi fi recommended

Tough to argue with pretty much any Daft Punk pick.  I'm probably picking "Digital Love" if I've gotta pick one, maybe "Crescendolls" if I want a deeper cut, but they're all just so good.

I considered this with that exact wording  -- "deeper cut" --  in mind. I love that song.

Alright, this song flat out rocks as much or more than anything in a deep, deep catalogue.

Once upon a time I think this was probably a somewhat controversial call because you don't often see the second single from the tenth album of a great artist, also sans the backing band that was so famously part of his success considered their best song, but I think a lot of people have come around to this viewpoint.

*Cue instantly recognizable guitar intro*

*Cue pretty awesome relationship defining lyrics*

*Cue Big Chorus*

*Cue Guitar solo*

Brief Trip Hop run :excited:

Saw him once maybe 20 years ago and he was pretty good, but definitely past his prime.   At the most recent Fleetwood concert I referenced earlier they did a real cool tribute to Petty and of course included a rendition of "Stop Dragging My Heart Around"...helped make it a memorable show for me.

Petty is so consistent it's tough for me to pick one that stands above the rest, I might go "Refugee" but would probably give you a different answer tomorrow based on my mood.

This album is rock perfection......great song.  It would be very hard for me to pick my fave Petty song, but you picked a doozy!  I'll go ahead and scratch Petty off my list now dammit

wow of 100 choices we both land on this... nice. there's 9 minute live version on youtube that kills.

2.24 - Joni Mitchell - Song For Sharon

The chalk would be "Both Sides Now" or something off of Blue but I've always preferred her Jazzbo period to her more Folkie albums. The three mid-70s albums from Court and Spark to Hejira are the pinnacle for me where the rich arrangements brought her ambitions to form and before the cigarettes and synthesizers took their toll.

I could have picked about a half dozen favorites from those three records alone but I'm going with "Song for Sharon". It's eight minutes long without a chorus or bridge kind of like some of Dylan's epics.

A cartoonist named Nathaniel Barlam did a lovely job with the hand drawn video.

One of my earliest discarded ideas for this draft was a Roots Rock mix. I listened to a bunch of Petty and convinced myself at the time that I'd pick "The Waiting" but two weeks later I'd probably go in a different direction.
The day we got the bad news, my daughter the music nerd had never heard his music. She knew the name, but he was an old geezer she never listened to. It was one of those days we made the round trip to LA and back for something. 4 hours in the car and I played Petty the whole time. About 15 minutes from home she said, "He never made a bad song, did he?"

TP has one of the most consistent catalogs in Rock music.

My daughter ditkaburgers never had much interest in Petty but she saw play at a festival and came away impressed.

Speaking of Tom Petty, here is his long-time collaborator and guitar player Mike Campbell playing with a young band I like a lot, Starcrawler.  The young lady singing is quite arresting when performing on stage.

We saw Starcrawler the week before shutdown last year.  Quite arresting is one way of putting it.

I love Tom Petty. You called him “consistent” - well his catalog - in another post and for me he’s consistently very good. It would be hard to pick “the best” for him because of that and he just doesn’t have that stand out song. “The Waiting” is as close as any. The consensus is probably “American Girl” and I get that. My personal favorites “Even The Losers”.

NOT A PICK - JUST A POST OF APPRECIATION FOR A GREAT SONG

2.32 - Prince - When Doves Cry

Yeah, it’s been played a lot, but that’s because it’s so awesome. I’m sure I’d pick a different song on a different day, but we’re here now.

This is on my short list of “perfect” songs. It’s a masterclass of pop, rock, and funk (even without bass). The fact it was so avant-garde and was still such a commercial hit speaks to its range and appeal.

Good timing - I have a few minutes between my back to back meetings to make my pick.

Picking the “best” song for this artist is extremely hard since his catalog is so vast and he touches so many genres/styles. I suppose this is why he fell this far (similar to Bowie).  Yo Mama selects:

If I had more courage and musical depth I could go with an animals theme with Dogs and Doves on my list, but that’s too much work and there’s no way I could pull it off.

I think Prince was already chosen
